Longtime Buffs DL Jalen Sami enters transfer portal

Longtime #cubuffs DL Jalen Sami has entered the portal

Colorado defensive lineman Jalen Sami entered the transfer portal on Tuesday, according to college football insider Mike Farrell.

Sami, who enters the portal as a graduate transfer, becomes the latest Buff to look for greener pastures during a significant few days of roster turnover under head coach Deion Sanders.

Sami had 28 total tackles in 2022 and 83 over his four-year career in Boulder.

He’s the fifth Colorado defensive lineman to hit the portal this offseason, along with Ryan Williams, Tyas Martin, Allan Baugh and Na’im Rodman.

It remains to be seen where Sami will play his final year of eligibility, but he had offers from Ole Miss and NCAA Division II CSU-Pueblo out of high school. Sami’s future likely lies at the Division I level, but he’ll look for a place to play post-Colorado.

Linebackers Zion Magalei and Mister Williams, cornerback Tayvion Beasley and center Travis Gray also joined Sami in the portal on Tuesday.

Jalen Sami is a candidate for breakout season, says Jon Wilner

Jalen Sami’s ceiling has yet to be reached

Colorado’s defensive line struggled for good parts of last season. The Buffs’ 13 sacks were the fewest in the Pac-12 and they relinquished an average of 178.6 rushing yards per game — fourth-most in the conference.

Now in 2022, D-line coach Gerald Chatman takes over a more experienced unit that we’ve been hearing good things about throughout fall camp, and tackle Jalen Sami returns as one of his biggest weapons.

Despite already making a big leap last season with an all-conference honorable mention, Pac-12 expert Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News believes Sami’s ceiling is much higher.

Wilner included Sami in his list of 15 Pac-12 players primed for a breakout season:

The Buffs were slapped around by attrition, but their roster isn’t completely devoid of talent. Sami is one of the top interior linemen in the league — it’s a well-stocked position group — and at 325 pounds, he’s certainly among the biggest. Earned honorable-mention recognition last season.

Five Buffaloes receive preseason All-Pac-12 honorable mention

Five Buffs were given All-Pac-12 preseason recognition

Five members of the 2022 Colorado Buffaloes football team received an honorable mention on the All-Pac-12 preseason team: Frank Fillip, Terrance Lang, Jalen Sami, Isaiah Lewis and Nikko Reed.

No Buffs were named to the first or second team.

Fillip is looking to rebound from a down year after an impressive 2020 season. Fillip will likely get the nod as the starting RT for the Buffs and is coming off an offseason in which he was able to fully participate.

Lang and Sami will both lead the defensive line in hopes of recapturing the success it had against Texas A&M for almost a full game last season.

Lewis and Reed should help to shore up a defensive backfield that has been hit with a lot of turnover this offseason. Lewis will be entering his final year at CU, while Reed, who was named an honorable mention as a return specialist, is entering his second season.
