ESPN’s NFL Live crew argues Jalen Milroe should be QB1 in 2025 NFL draft

Former NY Jets HC Rex Ryan makes the case that Jalen Milroe should be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

There is no better match-up in college football over the past five years than the Alabama Crimson Tide vs. the Georgia Bulldogs. The two squads have met five times since the start of the 2020 season with two coming for SEC Championships and one for a national title. They’ve combined to win the past four SEC titles and three of the last four national titles.

Saturday night in Tuscaloosa didn’t disappoint as the Dawgs roared back from a 28-0 first-half deficit before Bama true freshman WR Ryan Williams made the play of the game, and arguably the season on a 75-yard TD to give Alabama a seven-point fourth quarter lead. True freshman CB Zabien Brown picked off Carson Beck in the endzone in the last minute to close out the game and give the Tide a 41-34 victory.

The player of the game was Alabama QB Jalen Milroe who stamped himself as the Heisman Trophy favorite after another sensational performance. Milroe was 27/33 passing for 374 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. However, the pick wasn’t truly as his fault as his receiver bobbled it up into the air for UGA defenders to grab. He also carried the ball 16 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Milroe’s success through the air against a Kirby Smart and Glenn Schumann coached defense can not be understated. Now, many people are talking about Milroe as if he will be a first round pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Even former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan argues that Milroe could be the No. 1 overall selection.

Jalen Milroe draft stock rises with Alabama’s win over Georgia

Alabama QB Jalen Milroe had an outstanding game in the win over Georgia that will only help his 2025 NFL Draft stock

Jalen Milroe had one of the best nights of any college players on the biggest stage of the college football weekend. The Alabama quarterback’s performance in the Crimson Tide’s 41-34 win over rival Georgia in a battle of top-5 teams served as a nice booster for Milroe’s 2025 NFL Draft stock.

One game is but a single snapshot in a series of moving pictures that comprises a draft evaluation, but Alabama versus Georgia is a very prominent picture. Georgia’s defense is loaded with future NFL players and they’re generally well-coordinated.

On Saturday night, Milroe made Georgia look like a MAC team for most of the night. The 6-foot-2 junior completed 27 of his 33 passes, netting 374 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw an interception, one that went through both hands of his target before getting picked off by Georgia.

The numbers are nice, but it’s the way in which Milroe accrued them that is so appealing from an NFL point of view. Milroe was in complete control of the pre-snap reads and consistently made the best decision with the ball. His downfield accuracy was sharp, giving freshman sensation Ryan Williams opportunities to create (spectacularly!) after the catch.

His legs also looked outstanding. Milroe has typically been more of an opportunistic runner than a huge designed-run threat. Beating Malaki Starks, who should be a top-10 overall prospect at safety, to the edge on a run and then tightroping the sideline for a touchdown is not something entirely expected from Milroe. His acceleration was very impressive and caught the Bulldogs defense chasing air.

Milroe had a much better night than his Georgia counterpart, Carson Beck. It’s been that way pretty much all season, both in terms of collegiate performance and NFL traits. Expect to see some adjusting in the QB rankings from a lot of pundits elevating Milroe up.

Watch: Jalen Milroe puts Alabama up 28-0 over Georgia in the first half

No. 4 is making a strong case for the Heisman in late September.

What fans expected in the early-season matchup featuring the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide was far from what they saw early on in the first half.

After the first 15 minutes of football action, the Tide were up 21-0 thanks to the play of quarterback Jalen Milroe and a suffocating defense that hasn’t allowed the Bulldogs offense to even breathe. It got worse on a fourth-and-one play where Milroe was able to break a tackle and scamper down the sideline for his second rushing touchdown and third overall on the night.

If Milroe continues his play, there is no question that he will be invited to New York for the annual Heisman Memorial Trophy presentation. All he has to do is keep the Tide rolling along.

Alabama erupts for touchdowns on first four drives against Georgia

Alabama was on a roll against Georgia early

Georgia didn’t know what hit it at Bryant-Denny Stadium in the first quarter-plus on Saturday in its SEC clash with Alabama.

The Crimson Tide scored touchdowns on their first four drives in the top five matchup and surged to a 28-0 lead.

Jalen Milroe and the offense were in control, whether passing or running. Georgia could not stop Alabama runners from getting to the edge.

How Jalen Milroe will test the UGA defense

UGA Wire looks at Jalen Milroe’s abilities and how that’ll contend with Georgia’s defense.

Georgia has a ton of star players to deal with in their matchup against Alabama (streaming tomorrow on ABC at 7:30 p.m. ET). The biggest star player for UGA to worry about is Jalen Milroe, the dual-threat quarterback commanding the offense of the Crimson Tide. College GameDay and the rest of the college football fandom will be watching to see how his skillset will test the loaded Georgia defense.

Milroe emerged as the starter at Alabama following Bryce Young’s departure for the 2023 NFL Draft, and his rookie season was excellent. He threw for 2,834 yards on 284 attempts, 23 touchdowns, six interceptions, and a 177.5 passer rating, leading the Crimson Tide to a 27-24 win over the Bulldogs in the SEC Championship and a playoff berth, where they played the National Champion Michigan Wolverines close before losing 27-20.

So far this season, Milroe has 590 passing yards, eight touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 213.4 passer rating this year, albeit Alabama hasn’t played an SEC team until now.

Of course, Georgia will also have to compete with Milroe’s legs and arm. Milroe has 1,007 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns in his career, showing his prowess as a dual-threat quarterback. His legs put a lot of pressure on the defense, arguably making them his best weapon

That’s not to say that Milroe has no weakness in his game: he has a knack for hunting for the deep ball (he had 34 20+ air-yard throws last year), along with looking to run, which causes him to take a ton of sacks. He took 49 sacks last year + this year, which gives him an absurdly high 14.5 sack percentage.

Despite his mobility, he’s also not a quarterback who’s effective at sneaking. His attempt to hit the home run on most of his running plays can lead to negative plays, like sacks.

In that case, Georgia will have to make sure to win against Alabama’s offensive linemen to exploit this. It’s easier said than done, especially if Mykel Williams isn’t able to play. It’ll be a tough task for Georgia to claim victory over Alabama, but no. 4 under center for the Crimson Tide will make it even more difficult.

What UGA said about facing Alabama QB Jalen Milroe

Can UGA football get the better of star Alabama QB Jalen Milroe in 2024?

The college football world will be watching the Georgia Bulldogs play the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m ET on ABC. Arguably the biggest star in the Georgia-Alabama game is Alabama junior quarterback Jalen Milroe.

Milroe is an excellent athlete. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound quarterback is elusive as a rusher and has a lethal deep ball. Milroe has thrown for 590 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns and no interceptions this season. He is a big reason why Alabama is 3-0.

Milroe is a dynamic playmaker that hurts opposing teams with drive-extending scrambles and designed runs. He already has six rushing touchdowns this season.

“It’s a considerable jump (from last year) as a just natural pocket passer,” said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart on Jalen Milroe. “You see him make more throws now that are like rhythm throws, on-time throws, RPO throws. You could tell he’s become more comfortable with those things.”

Milroe has done a good job of adjusting to Alabama’s new offensive scheme under head coach Kalen DeBoer. Alabama has averaged 49 points per game through three weeks and looks very explosive offensively.

“Still, some of his best and most exciting plays are when things break down or when he runs the ball by design,” continued Kirby Smart. “Either one is very dangerous, but you can see him as a deep ball passer, the vertical passing game, the shots, the rhythm throws, the outs, the timing throws, the RPO throws. He’s improved immensely at that part of his game, but he’s always been good at the athletic part of the game.”

There’s no doubt that Milroe is one of the top quarterbacks in all of college football. Milroe has already forged a strong connection with freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams, who is the Crimson Tide’s leading receiver through three weeks with 10 receptions for 285 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

Milroe played well in Alabama’s 27-24 SEC championship win over Georgia last season. He completed 13 of 23 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns in Alabama’s three-point win. Georgia did a good job of containing Milroe as a rusher. The Bulldogs sacked him four times and limited him to 29 rushing yards on 14 carries.

“Just how explosive he is,” said Georgia linebacker Smael Mondon on facing Milroe. “He’s a dynamic athlete, but he’s also a good quarterback too, throwing the ball. He throws a really good deep ball and with his feet, he’s really explosive.”

Georgia returns a lot of its defensive personnel in the front seven from last year’s SEC championship game. The Bulldogs need a big day from their pass rush if they’re going to slow down Milroe and the Crimson Tide.

Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week

The Alabama quarterback had a big day against Wisconsin.

As a result of his stellar performance Saturday in a win over the Wisconsin Badgers, Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe has been named the Week 3 SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Milroe was the lone Alabama player to receive a weekly honor by the SEC coming out of Week 3, with the Crimson Tide starting quarterback sharing it with Ole Miss signal caller Jaxson Dart.

In Week 3, Milroe was easily one of the top performers across all of college football as he led Alabama to an impressive 42-10 road victory in Madison.

Against the Badgers, Milroe accounted for five of Alabama’s six touchdowns Saturday, as he completed 12-of-17 passes for 196 yards and three scores. In addition to that, Milroe also rushed for a team-high 75 yards and two more touchdowns on 14 attempts.

For the season, Milroe now owns a 67.3 CMP% with 590 passing yards and an 8:0 TD:INT ratio across three games, while also having rushed for 156 yards and six touchdowns on 36 attempts. Is Milroe potentially emerging as an early-season frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy?

The Wisconsin Badgers football team lost to Alabama 42-10 at home on Saturday. It was the team’s first loss of the year, dropping its record to 2-1 on the young season.

Wisconsin’s starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke went down with a leg injury on the Badgers’ opening possession. He was replaced by redshirt sophomore Braedyn Locke for the remainder of the game.

Locke ended his day with 125 passing yards and a touchdown while completing 13 of 26 passes. The Badgers’ running game never found consistent success, with both Chez Mellusi and Cade Yacamelli losing back-breaking fumbles.

On the flip side, Alabama was in full command after falling behind 3-0 to start the game. Quarterback Jalen Milroe, a Heisman Trophy candidate, had himself a day. He compiled 196 passing yards and three touchdowns on 12 of 17 passing. He also added 75 rushing yards and two scores on 14 carries.

The Badgers will look to regroup during the bye week as they prepare to travel to Los Angeles, California to face USC on Sept. 28. In the meantime, here are some of the best pictures from Wisconsin’s Week 3 loss to the Crimson Tide:

Miami QB Cam Ward making strong case to be QB1 in 2025 NFL draft

Cam Ward has been the best quarterback in college football through three weeks.

The quarterback class of the 2025 NFL draft is wide open through three weeks of the college football season. No quarterback has set themselves apart so far and more quarterbacks have lost ground as opposed to boosted it. Guys like Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Texas A&M’s Connor Weigman have both taken a serious step back after looking like the top two quarterbacks.

One guy who is making a very strong case to work his way into the QB1 spot is Miami’s Cam Ward. Ward has been unstoppable so far this season and of the top quarterbacks in the country, throws the best deep ball. Ward is also a solid athlete and can beat defenses with his feet if necessary.

On Saturday against Ball State, Ward three for 345 yards and five touchdowns in just one drive over a half of play. This gives Ward 1,035 passing yards and 12 total touchdowns through three games.

There are going to be plenty of quarterback-needy teams when the draft rolls around and if Ward can continue to improve, he will push Carson Beck for the top quarterback as long as he can hold off Alabama signal caller Jalen Milroe who is our other big riser through three weeks.
