San Diego State Football: Run defense hurts Aztecs in 34-31 loss to Boise State

It was a back-and-forth game as the San Diego State Aztecs hosted the Boise State Broncos; Boise State came out on top 34-31.

It was a back-and-forth game as the San Diego State Aztecs hosted the Boise State Broncos; Boise State came out on top 34-31.

Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty scored with two minutes left to extend Boise State’s lead to 34-24, but San Diego State’s Jalen Mayden scored a 10-yard run to make 34-31 with 42 seconds left.

Run defense struggled

The Aztecs could not stop Jeanty; he rushed for 205 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. One of his touchdowns was a 58-yard run. Jeanty averaged 8.9 yards per carry. The Aztecs have to do a better job stopping the run; you can not give up 241 yards rushing in a game and expect to win.

Jalen Mayden showed up

After a slow start, Mayden found his footing and threw for 241 yards on 16-of-22 passing. He also threw one touchdown pass. Maylen also rushed for 85 yards on 16 attempts with one touchdown. Mayden showed his ability to be a two-way threat, which bodes well for San Diego State in the future.

Mayden threw to nine different receivers, with Baylin Brooks leading the way with five catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. Brionne Penny also caught five passes and added 97 yards.

Turnovers

The downside for Mayden against Boise State was his two lost fumbles. One of the fumbles came after Christon’s incredible 71-yard kick return to open the game. If you lose the turnover battle, you are probably going to lose.

The Azrecs had more first downs and total yards than the Broncos, but the inability to stop the run and turnovers cost them the game.

Now at 2-3, San Diego State plays Air Force next week on the road, another challenging game. Air Force is currently 4-0.

The San Deigo State Aztecs hosted the UCLA Bruins Sunday afternoon and lost 35-10. San Diego State started well, and the game was 7-7 after the first quarter,

In the second quarter, the Aztecs were outscored 21 -3 and never managed to fight back. San Diego State’s quarterback Jalen Mayden had tough throwing for 196 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

San Diego State could not get much going on the ground either, rushing for just 63 yards on 33 carries. They only ran for 1.9 yards per carry; that’s not very good.

The Aztecs’ defense gave up 290 passing yards to UCLA quarterback Dante Moore, who also tossed three touchdown passes. Moore is a true freshman but played like a veteran,

UCLA also rushed for 254 yards in the game on 6.5 yards per carry. It was a tough day for the San Diego State defense.

It is hard to play defense when your offense turns the ball over and can’t get anything going. ]Linebacker Zyrus Fiaseu was a bright spot for the Aztecs’ defense with 12 tackles, two for a loss, one sack, and one pass defended.

As we advance, San Diego State will need to play better on both sides of the ball.

Jalen Mayden Quarterback San Diego State

Last week, Jalen Maden started 4-10 with 37 yards but then picked it up as the game went on and completed 13 of 17 passes for 127 for two touchdowns. Mayden can beat you with his arms and his legs. It will be Mayden’s second game in new offensive coordinator Ryan Lindley’s system; he should play better as the season progresses.

Jaylon Armstead Running Back San Diego State

Last week against Ohio, Jaylon Armstead rushed for 78 yards on just eight carries. He only played 11 snaps, while Kenan Christon played 39. Look for Amrstead to get more snaps and be more effective on Saturday night.

Hunter Hays Quarterback Idaho State

The Bengals have a new offensive coordinator, Cody Hawkins. Idaho State’s new offense will be more pass-centric, which should help Hunter Hays play better. Hays passed for 2,322 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 23 games. In last year’s game against San Diego State, he threw for 140 yards after coming for starting quarterback Tyler Vander Waal.

Keys to the Game

Pressure the Quarterback

With a pass-centri offense, the Aztec defense must pressure Hays to slow down their passing attack. The San Diego State defense had two sacks and three interceptions last week against the Bobcats.

Tackle better

The San Diego State defense played well last week, but they missed a lot of tackles. Missed tackles led to extra downs and allowed their defense to be on the field longer than they had to. The Bobcats had the ball for 27 of the 40 minutes. According to PFF, the Azres missed 12 tackles and gave up 26 first downs.

Run the Ball

Last week, San Diego State rushed for 145 yards and averaged 5.3 yards per carry. Running the ball well helps loosen up the passing game and makes you effective in play-action passing. The Aztecs had a nice balanced attack last week, and Mayden did not turn the ball over. Expect the same game plan this week.

Prediction

Expect San Diego State to take off business; they played last week, so there will be no first-game jitters. The Aztecs are the better team, but they must stay disciplined, cut down on the missed tackles, and not turn the ball over.

Ohio and San Diego State have played once before in the 2018 Frisco Bowl when the Bobcats shut out the Aztecs 27-0. Both head coaches have changed since, but a handful of players remain on both rosters.

Players to Watch

Jalen Mayden

Mayden came on strong last year as quarterback for the Aztecs. He threw for 2.030 yards, 12 touchdowns, and ten interceptions last year for San Diego State. Mayden is athletic and rushed for 231 yards last season, along with three touchdowns. With Ryan Lindley as offensive coordinator, Mayden should be ready to take the next step.

Cody Moon

Moon was a transfer from New Mexico last season; he had 105 tackles, 9.5 for a loss, and 4.5 sacks. Moon brings toughness and a good football IQ to the San Deigo State defense. He is also a quick runner who will help the Aztecs’ linebacker core.

Kurtis Rourke

Rourke led the Ohio offense to 31.8 points per game last year. Rourke won MAC Offensive Player of the Year honors last season, despite an ACL injury in November that ended his season after 11 games. He was the MAC’s leading passer at the time of the injury, as he threw for 25 touchdowns, 3,257 yards, and completed 69% of his passes. Rourke is also a dual threat, as he rushed for four touchdowns and compiled 245 rushing yards.

Keys to the Game

The Aztecs’ defensive line needs to play well

Along with Rourke, Ohio possesses a good rushing attack with reigning MAC Freshman of the Year in Sieh Bangura, who ranked fourth in the conference in rushing yards (1,078) and third in rushing touchdowns (13) in his first season. When you’re against a team that can run and pass well, your defensive line must show up and dominate in the trenches.

Newcomer Samuela Tuihalamaka, a defensive tackle, must lead the defensive line and get penetration in the Ohio backfield to slow down the Bobcats’ offense. The best way to beat a good offense is to pressure the quarterback and stop the run.

Run the ball

When you go against a team with a high-scoring offense, you must run the ball well to keep that offense off the field. With three returning offensive linemen, San Diego State must run the ball successfully. Several options earned a handful of carries in 2022, including Kenan Christon (71 rushes, 261 yards), Jaylon Armstead (52 rushes, 213 yards), and Cam Davis (46 rushes, 151 yards).

Play-action passing

If San Deigo State can run the ball well, it will open up the play-action passing attack. But the Aztecs ranked 116th in the nation in passing yards last season under Ryan Lindley as offensive coordinator; look for that number to go up, especially in Week 0. Mayden will have a chance to make plays down the field with his arm, and San Diego State must hit those big plays.

The game will be back and forth game, but San Diego State’s defense will get a couple of key stops, and Mayden will be able to make plays with his legs and arm to give the Aztecs a narrow victory.

Mayden became the starter in October 2022

Jalen Mayden capped off the 2022 season with a 5-3 record as San Diego State’s starting quarterback.

San Diego State went through several quarterbacks in the first month of the season before Mayden took over against Hawaii in October. Mayden ultimately became the starter after Braxton Burmeister was benched and no other quarterback could permanently fill the starting spot for Burmeister.

Mayden, who was one of San Diego State’s quarterbacks in 2021, switched to safety in the 2022 offseason. He was a safety for the first five games of the regular season until he made the midseason return to the quarterback position. Once Mayden returned to his former position, he never looked back and put the Aztecs in a position to be bowl eligible. The Aztecs were 2-3 before Mayden was named the starter in Week 6.

In eight games, Mayden passed for 2,030 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the Aztecs. He added 231 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. Mayden was a dynamic quarterback for San Diego State and he provided a spark to the offense.

Heading into the 2023 season, Mayden will already have more than half of a season worth of experience as San Diego State’s starting quarterback. He nearly secured a victory in the Hawaii Bowl against Middle Tennessee State. Mayden will be able to build off of his first bowl game appearance as a quarterback.

If Mayden is able to win the starting quarterback job in the offseason, he will have a full season to guide the offense. Next season will be important for Mayden to prove that he can lead San Diego State’s offense for an entire season.

Inconsistency at quarterback held San Diego State back from winning more games in 2022. Solving that issue could turn San Diego State into one of the best Group of 5 teams in the country.
