Four realistic targets for the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA trade deadline

Who are reasonable trade targets given the financial and structural issues the team needs to consider?

The Boston Celtics are rumored to be looking into potential trade targets in the frontcourt and on the wing ahead of the 2023 NBA trade deadline. But given the state of the club’s draft asset collection and the team’s overall tax bill — not a minor issue — it seems unlikely the Celtics will make a major move to find such players.

And with the best record in the league, that makes a world of sense. But that also isn’t necessarily a reason not to improve the team via trades if the right candidates are available through such a route.

But who are reasonable trade targets given the financial and structural issues the team needs to consider?

NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg recently revealed four such players he thinks make sense for Boston — whether a bigger deal for Jakob Poeltl, something more reserved such as Naz Reid (our favorite), splitting the difference with PJ Washington or a wing like Alec Burks.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear his takes on a recent episode of “Celtics Post Up”.

Report: Celtics seen as unlikely to deal for San Antonio Spurs big man Jakob Poeltl

The Boston Celtics are not seen as likely to trade for San Antonio Spurs big man Jakob Poeltl.

The Boston Celtics are not seen as likely to trade for San Antonio Spurs big man Jakob Poeltl according to league sources outside the Celtics organization according to new reporting from The Athletic’s Jay King. Per King, said sources note that “if the Spurs do deal him, the impending free agent would make more sense somewhere he is a better long-term fit,” particularly considering that the team recently extended Al Horford and have Robert Williams III locked up for the near-term future.

Still, as have many, King makes the case for the Celtics pursuing big man depth of a slightly lower caliber given what we’ve been hearing, what we have seen from the team on the court — and what we know about the big men already on the roster regarding health and age.

King offers up some alternative targets in PJ Washington, Mason Plumlee, or Jae’Sean Tate, acknowledging they aren’t the sort of traditional centers Boston might be expected to look for.

The first two are intriguing but would require substantial salary ballast in Plumlee’s case and draft assets as well in Washington’s, with Tate being short enough at just 6-foot-4 that playing him as a functional 4 with the Celtics may be a bit of a gamble.

Instead, we propose using such a roster spot on a player with size able to provide a different look than the bigs and forwards on the team’s roster now like Naz Reid or Nick Richards.

Haynes: Boston Celtics on the market to add a big man via trade

‘The defending Eastern Conference champs are seeking to add injury insurance’ to their frontcourt, according to B/R’s Chris Haynes.

Aligning with recent trade rumblings across the NBA media sphere tying the Boston Celtics to San Antonio Spurs center Jakob Poeltl and New Orleans Pelicans big man Willy Hernangomez, Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes is reporting the Boston Celtics hope to bolster their frontcourt rotation via the trade market if possible.

Per Haynes, the Celtics “are in the market for a big,” according to his sources. “The defending Eastern Conference champs are seeking to add injury insurance behind Robert Williams III and Al Horford, two players they have to carefully manage during the regular season,” he wrote.

“If the Celtics don’t acquire a big before the trade deadline, they’ll turn their attention to the buyout market,” the B/R reporter notes.

Given the importance of Timelord and Horford to Boston’s title aspirations, such a course of action would be prudent for the Celtics.

Now, the challenge becomes finding an option that is both a good fit and affordable in terms of the ask as well as the salary — no easy job for Boston’s front office, but an important one nonetheless.

Celtics reportedly interested in dropping 2028 pick protections owed Spurs for Jakob Poeltl trade

Currently, Boston has obligations to send that draft pick to the Spurs in a swap from the Derrick White trade.

As we hear more rumbles around the league about what teams might be up to, intel on the trade status of San Antonio Spurs big man Jakob Poeltl emerged in a recent article by Spurs Talk’s LJ Ellis. The Celtics, who have been tied to Poeltl by several reports, most recently the Athletic’s Shams Charania, are reportedly including “a completely unprotected 2028 first round pick.”

Boston has to send that draft pick to the Spurs in a swap as part of the Derrick White deal should San Antonio ask for it, unless it’s the No. 1 overall pick.

“In this proposed Poeltl deal, the Spurs would get the 2028 first-round pick outright and the first overall pick protection would be dropped,” suggests Lidell.

This would signal significant interest from Boston given they’d likely match reports suggesting the Spurs would prefer two firsts for Poeltl given they have interest in trying to re-sign the Austrian center.

According to the Spurs Talk analyst, Boston the Celtics reportedly see Poeltl “as the perfect fit to fortify their frontcourt as they gear up for a championship push.”

Would trading for Pels big man Willy Hernangomez make more sense than Jakob Poeltl for the Boston Celtics?

For one prominent NBA analyst, that seems to be the case.

Would trading for New Orleans Pelicans big man Willy Hernangomez make more sense than Jakob Poeltl for the Boston Celtics?

By now, most fans have heard about the Celtics’ rumored interest in acquiring San Antonio Spurs center Jakob Poeltl, presumably as insurance and as a minutes-eater to preserve the legs of Boston bigs Robert Williams III and Al Horford for the postseason.

But such a trade would likely be costly, as would bringing the German big man back in free agency this summer. Instead, ESPN’s Bobby Marks proposes a trade for New Orleans Pelicans center Willy Hernangomez that could make more sense for what the Celtics need.

Currently seeing his minutes decrease due to the Pelicans’ frontcourt needs being met by better players, Hernangomez could play an elastic role with Boston. His 6-foot-11 frame and ability to adapt to whatever role his teams have needed in the past suggest he’d be a good fit.

Though he doesn’t have much of a game away from the basket, he can at least hit an occasional jumper near the bucket and works hard on the boards every night.

Averaging 6.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in just under 12 minutes per game while earning just $2.4 million this season and a similar amount next, Boston could do far worse than dealing the two second-rounders Marks envisions as the cost.

Shams: Boston Celtics among teams with significant trade interest in San Antonio Spurs center Jakob Poeltl

Does a deal for the Spurs big man make sense for Boston?

Trade season appears to be kicking into a higher gear with The Athletic’s Shams Charania reporting the Boston Celtics as among teams with significant trade interest in San Antonio Spurs center Jakob Poeltl. Competing with the Toronto Raptors and perhaps more clubs not named by Charania, Poetl’s “desire to compete on the highest levels is a factor that other organizations feel is important for the pending unrestricted free agent” according to the Athletic analyst.

With the risk of losing the German big man for nothing, the Spurs may prove motivated to get something back for Poeltl before this summer’s free agency period arrives.

It remains unclear how Boston would entice San Antonio in a manner that would not significantly affect their current title aspirations, but the news of interest could signal a serious attempt at picking up the rising Spurs center ahead of the 2023 NBA trade deadline.

Or it could be disinformation designed to elevate his asking price for other franchises, a situation Celtics fans are quite familiar with.

Mock trade has Brooklyn Nets trading for San Antonio Spurs big Jakob Poeltl

Could the Brooklyn Nets made a trade for Spurs big Jakob Poeltl.

Now that 2023 is here, it’s time to ponder a mock trade for the Brooklyn Nets and evaluate its viability for the franchise. In an article published earlier this week by Hoopshabit.com, there was a hypothetical trade proposed that could be an attempt in making the Nets a better team.

Before we get into the mock trade, it should be noted that the Nets are currently on an 11-game winning streak and have won 11 of their past 12 games. In the team’s most recent game, a 123-106 win over the Charlotte Hornets on New Years Eve, the Nets had their fourth wire-to-wire win this season.

Against the Hornets, Brooklyn took care of business from the opening tip and led by as many as 22 points in the contest. However, Charlotte out-rebounded the Nets and was able to score at will in the paint. Even though starting center Nic Claxton has been great for the Nets this season, he is the team’s only true big. With that being said, here’s the mock trade:

Celtics reportedly not very active in trade talks for San Antonio Spears big man Jakob Poeltl

Despite being tied to the Spurs center, word is the team has cooled on such a pursuit.

Now that Dec. 15 has arrived and with it a larger pool of players able to be traded, fans of the Boston Celtics are getting a bit antsier than usual for a move around the margins.

Such a move sounds doubtful, however, at least for one player who has reportedly been on the Celtics’ radar.

Per Yahoo’s Jake Fischer, the Celtics “don’t appear very active in the early trade chatter around the league” regarding previous interest in San Antonio Spurs big man Jakob Poeltl, though that may be because of better-than-expected contributions from backup center Luke Kornet and veteran big man Blake Griffin.

Boston may yet want to load up a bit on their frontcourt rotation to find a more mobile big able to defend on the perimeter but also in the interior even with starting center Robert Williams III returning soon based on what we’ve seen for the team playing against bigger lineups.

But it seems that a player of Poeltl’s caliber is more than what the Celtics are likely looking for ahead of the deadline at present — and for good reason.

The top 10 NBA players who may realistically get traded to the Lakers, ranked

Maybe they’re not trading for Zach LaVine. But who else could be available?

The Lakers had a recent resurgence, but still have a losing record this season. As of right now, they’re on the outside looking in on the playoffs.

Considering that they owe their first-round pick to the Pelicans in a swap, however, they do not have the option to bottom out and tank. Instead, with Anthony Davis playing some of the best basketball of his life, Los Angeles will likely pursue deals to improve their roster.

The NBA hot stove is starting to heat up fast. Many insiders believe that a trade is “imminent” for the Lakers, who reportedly believe they are only a couple of players away from turning this team into “legitimate contenders” this season.

It seems far more likely that Los Angeles pursues “smaller deals” involving mid-sized contracts like Patrick Beverley and Kendrick Nunn rather than a bigger trade centered around Russell Westbrook and one or multiple future first-round picks.

That means that there could be multiple trades on the horizon, and based on what we know so far from all of the reporting, these are the most likely trade candidates for Los Angeles.

Lakers may have an interest in Spurs center Jakob Poeltl

Myles Turner isn’t the only center the Lakers are rumored to be interested in trading for.

The Los Angeles Lakers have seemingly been active in trade discussions lately, and the bulk of those discussions have focused on upgrading the wing and forward positions.

But it also seems they have interest in possibly acquiring another center. The Indiana Pacers’ Myles Turner has been the center linked most often to L.A.

Another is the San Antonio Spurs’ Jakob Poeltl, and it appears that rumor may be heating up a bit.

Via Bleacher Report:

“The San Antonio Spurs (9-18) round out the list of bottom-performers/top-lottery contenders. Does center Jakob Poeltl fit into their long-term plans? He’ll be an unrestricted free agent this summer and could be the best available center at the deadline.

“Teams like the Clippers, Warriors and Lakers may have an interest.”

Poeltl, 27, is averaging 12.9 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 64% from the field. He is certainly a legitimate starting-caliber NBA center, and he has started in all 20 of his games this season.
