WATCH: Badgers linebacker blows up Buffalo’s option play

Junior linebacker starts off season with a bang

The Badgers are coming off of a 38-17 win over Buffalo in Week 1 this past weekend and an unheralded star from the game was linebacker Jake Chaney. Chaney finished the contest with five tackles, including one for a loss.

Chaney is entering his third season with Wisconsin and he seems poised to take a step up in his junior campaign. Operating in a Badgers defense that no longer has top edge rusher Nick Herbig (Steelers), Chaney could be the explosive outside linebacker that slides into that role.

Wisconsin went without a sack in the 21-point victory over Buffalo, but they will need to get after the quarterback this week versus Washington State on the road and beyond.

Badger Countdown: Number 36 set for expanded role in 2023

The 2023 college football season is on the horizon and the Badgers are now 36 days away from their opener versus Buffalo on Sept. 2.

The 2023 college football season is on the horizon and the Badgers are now 36 days away from their opener versus Buffalo on Sept. 2. A player expected to have a significant role with Wisconsin’s defense is number 36 linebacker Jake Chaney.

Chaney is set for a bigger workload with linebacker Nick Herbig moving on to the NFL. Chaney played in 12 games last year, recording 38 tackles, including a sack, while also intercepting a pass.

He’s expected to serve as a top interior linebacker with Maema Njongmeta alongside Jordan Turner and Darryl Peterson at outside linebacker on the Badgers defense in 2023.

As a 5-foot-11, 230-pound athlete seems like the next undersized Wisconsin player to breakthrough and become a star.

Predicting Badger Football stat leaders for 2023

Who will be the stat leaders for Wisconsin in 2023?

The Wisconsin Badgers’ football team is gearing up for a very unique season in 2023, operating under the leadership of new head coach Luke Fickell.

After six seasons with Cincinnati, Fickell has made the leap to the Big Ten. Joining him are new coordinators Phil Longo (offense) and Mike Tressel (defense), setting the Badgers up for a new look this year.

Longo’s “Air Raid” offense in particular has energized the fans, giving them hope that the offense will be more effective in 2023 and beyond. Additionally, the Badgers have brought in many high-caliber transfer athletes and could make a splash in the Big Ten in year one under Fickell and company.

As the season is about 100 days away, Badgers Wire projects the major statistical category leaders for Wisconsin heading into the 2023 campaign.

Badgers PFF grades: Top 5 defensive players from the win over Purdue

Here’s a look at the top 5 highest graded defensive players from Wisconsin’s victory over Purdue, according to Pro Football Focus:

Madison, Wis. – In his first home game as interim head coach, Jim Leonhard and the Wisconsin Badgers (4-4, 2-3 Big Ten), who were one-and-a-half point favorites, took care of business, winning 35-24 at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Against Purdue, the Wisconsin Badgers’ defense was missing some pretty important tools from its toolbox – but in the end, it didn’t matter.

Outside linebacker Nick Herbig didn’t play, and nose tackle Keeanu Benton was on a pitch count – but the defense as a whole found a way to slow down one of the Big Ten’s best offenses.

In total, UW allowed 431 total yards on 5.5 yards per play and won the turnover battle, forcing O’Connell to throw three interceptions on the day – one of which was a pick-six returned by safety John Torchio for a touchdown.

Inside linebacker play has been a real question mark so far this season, but I thought Maema Njongmeta and Jordan Turner played one of their best games as a pairing – which made a significant difference.

The Jewelry Thief stole the show on homecoming weekend, registering 10 tackles, two interceptions, a pass deflection, and a touchdown.

Here’s a look at the five highest-graded defensive players from Wisconsin’s victory over Purdue, according to Pro Football Focus.

Wisconsin’s re-tooled inside linebacker room filled with upside

Although the group is inexperienced, Wisconsin’s inside linebacker room has a ton of upside:

Madison, Wis. – Wisconsin football held an open competition for both starting inside linebacker spots this fall, but several players should see the field in 2022.

Wisconsin lost Leo Chenal and Jack Sanborn, who were arguably the best inside linebacker tandem in the country last season, to the NFL—leaving a significant amount of snaps up for grabs among a young but talented group of linebackers.

“First off, that group, the competition was awesome,” said defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard in a video posted on Twitter by Jeff Potrykus. “I would say the growth from spring to the end of camp, really fun to watch that group grow and compete every day.”

During spring and fall practices, the Badgers coaching staff gave equal opportunity to players like Jordan Turner, Maema Njongmeta, Tate Grass, Jake Chaney, and Bryan Sanborn, who reportedly pushed for a spot in the two-deep late in camp.

“It was kind of make it-take it. Whoever graded out best the day before, you’re going with the ones,” explained Leonhard. “If you didn’t, ‘Let’s go take it back.’ They really bought into that and played off each other really well.”

On Monday, Wisconsin’s coaching staff released their first official depth chart. Heading into week one, the top pairing vs. Illinois State will be Turner and Njongmeta, both tremendous athletes for the position.

“To me, Jordan and Maema, just the consistency with what they did – I just think the consistency overall with what they did in camp, gave them a little bit of an edge,” said Leonhard.

Behind them, former walk-on Tate Grass and Jake Chaney round of the two-deep. The top four inside backers are expected to rotate in – which is a stark contrast from last season, where Chenal and Sanborn played almost every down.

Although the group is inexperienced, Wisconsin has recruited the position exceptionally well. Players like Bryan Sanborn, Spencer Lytle, Jake Ratzlaff, and Aidan Vaughn not being in the top group speaks to the overall depth of the ILB room.

I believe that Turner, who made an impact last season despite playing only 24 snaps, has a chance to be the next star inside linebacker for Wisconsin football. In a limited role, he registered six tackles, two pressures, two interceptions, and the fifth-highest Pro Football Focus grade of UW’s returning defensive players (71.1). He’s oozing with potential, and his defensive coordinator, Jim Leonhard, agrees.

“Physically, you look at him and you’re like, ‘Wow,'” defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard said. “He’s big, physical, he can run, he’s a striker. Probably runs as well as any (inside) backer we’ve had here recently. When you start talking about the physical side, sometimes you overlook — he understands ball. He gets it. He can communicate. It’s a lot of fun pushing him because his ceiling is extremely high.”

If you expect the play at ILB to remain at the same level it was last season; you’ll likely be disappointed. That said, this group has plenty of young talent with potential and will be a fun position group to monitor once the season gets underway. The cream, as they say, will rise to the top.

Wisconsin Lands Commitment from 2021 LB Jake Chaney

The Badgers received good news on Sunday when 2021 linebacker Jake Chaney announced his commitment to Wisconsin.

Wisconsin hadn’t received a commitment in football since December 23rd when the Badgers landed highly coveted consensus four-star safety Hunter Wohler from Muskego High School.

That changed on Sunday when three-star inside linebacker Jake Chaney from Lehigh Acres, Fla. announced his commitment to Wisconsin in a Twitter post.

Chaney chose Wisconsin over other offers from Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa State, Pittsburgh, and more as he holds a total of 11 scholarship offers.

The Badgers didn’t sign a player from the state of Florida during the 2020 recruiting cycle as Chaney is the third linebacker to commit in the 2021 class as he joins Bryan Sanborn and Ayo Adebogun.

Although no high school prospects are currently allowed to visit Wisconsin due to the coronavirus outbreak Chaney did visit Wisconsin the weekend of November 23rd to see the Badgers play Purdue.

Chaney officially received his offer from Wisconsin in January as he was coming off a junior season in which he racked up 100 tackles, 10 for loss, and two sacks as he was named the District 7A Player of the Year in Florida.

Wisconsin currently has nine commitments in the 2021 recruiting class.

Wisconsin offers 2021 linebacker Jake Chaney

Wisconsin extended an offer to class of 2021 inside linebacker Jake Chaney out of Florida on Tuesday evening.

Wisconsin was busy in the class of 2021 yesterday, following up an offer to four-star tight end Thomas Fidone (Council Bluffs, Iowa) in the afternoon by making a move on inside linebacker Jake Chaney in the evening.

The Badgers became the second program to extend an offer to the unranked prospect out of Lehigh Acres, Fla., who received one from Iowa State last month. However, Cincinnati quickly followed Wisconsin’s lead on Tuesday evening, with Chaney announcing an offer from the Bearcats an hour and a half later.

Badger fans shouldn’t be fooled by his current status as an unranked recruit with a slim list of suitors; Chaney is an intriguing prospect whose recruitment is most likely just beginning. His junior film shows an instinctive, tenacious inside linebacker with excellent downhill tackling ability, a playing style that reminds me a great deal of Chris Orr’s.

You also have to be encouraged by Chaney’s background, as he’s a coach’s son with football bloodlines. His dad, James, played on the defensive line at Florida State from 1988-92 and is Jake’s head coach at Lehigh Senior.

Wisconsin should be a top contender for Chaney moving forward. The staff’s ability to sell the program’s pipeline of linebackers to the NFL to recruits has worked wonders over the last few classes, and he has already expressed enough interest in the Badgers to make the trip up to Madison on his own dime for an unofficial visit.

Wisconsin already has one commitment from an exciting linebacker prospect in three-star Bryan Sanborn (Lake Zurich, Ill.), and, in addition to Chaney, should be a major player for the likes of four-stars Mac Uihlein (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Yanni Karlaftis (West Lafayette, Ind.) and three-stars Kobe King (Detroit, Mich.), Trey Reynolds (Queen Creek, Ariz.) and Damon Ollison (Akron, Ohio).
