Lions add two linemen, place Netane Muti on I.R.

Lions add two linemen to the roster, one of them a former Detroit draft pick, and place Netane Muti on I.R.

The Detroit Lions have made a couple of additions to the training camp roster and placed another on injured reserve prior to Thursday’s practice session in Allen Park.

The Lions added offensive lineman Jake Burton and defensive lineman Pat O’Connor.

Burton is a tackle who has bounced around several training camps and practice squads since finishing his college career at UCLA in 2019. He played for the Michigan Panthers of the UFL as well. During his time with the Bruins, he played under current Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley.

O’Connor is a more familiar name for Lions fans. He was a seventh-round draft pick by Detroit back in the 2017 NFL Draft, though he failed to make the team as a rookie. Now 30, the Eastern Michigan product has spent the last several seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, bouncing between the practice squad and active roster.

The Lions also placed offensive lineman Netane Muti on injured reserve with a shoulder injury suffered in Tuesday’s practice.

Chiefs hosted former Giants OL Jake Burton for tryout

The #Chiefs hosted an offensive lineman for a tryout who has experience playing both right tackle and guard.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to look at ways they can improve the 90-man offseason roster at the onset of training camp.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chiefs brought in former New York Giants OL Jake Burton for a tryout. Burton (6-6, 312 pounds) signed with New York out of Baylor as an undrafted free agent ahead of the 2021 NFL season. He spent the entire offseason with the Giants before he was released during 53-man roster cuts.

Burton originally began his college career at UCLA, where he appeared in 29 games with 23 starts at right tackle. When the PAC-12 initially decided to cancel their season due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Burton entered the transfer portal as a grad transfer. He eventually landed at Baylor where he made the switch to guard.

This spring, Burton played in the USFL where he played in nine games and started eight games at tackle for the Philadelphia Stars, including the USFL championship game.

Kansas City continues to face depth issues at the offensive tackle position with two players on the active/PUP list and Orlando Brown Jr. not reporting to camp on time. It’s not a surprise to see them leaving no stones unturned if even only to have some names for their call list should there be an injury during training camp or the preseason.

Three of New York’s six draft picks remain unsigned. They are first-round wide receiver Kadrious Toney, third-round cornerback Aaron Robinson and fourth-round edge rusher Elerson Smith.

UCLA OT enters the transfer portal, should Texas kick the tires?

Current UCLA right tackle Jake Burton announced on Twitter he would be entering the transfer portal. Should the Longhorns give him a look?

One of the expectations of the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences punting on the season had to be the transfer portal. How many players would enter the transfer portal in an effort to play in the fall? UCLA offensive tackle Jake Burton announced on Tuesday that he would indeed enter the portal for the opportunity to play in the fall. He made his announcement on Twitter.

I wish to thank God and my family for all of the love, guidance and support they have given me during my time at UCLA. I also wish to thank Coach Mora, Coach Fraley, Coach McClure and Coach Fisch for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play for this amazing school. Coach Kelly, Coach Frye, Coach Wintrich, Coach Heiberger and Mr. Rick Aversano have helped me develop as a football player and I wish to thank them for their dedication and support. I was looking forward to finishing my college career with my Bruin teammates. Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, that is not possible this year. After much thought, I have decided to enter the portal in hopes of gaining the opportunity to play football this Fall.

Jake Burton started at right tackle for the Bruins the last two seasons with 23 starts and appeared in all 24 possible games. Burton started out his career as a defensive lineman before moving over to offensive line prior to his redshirt freshman season in 2017. Now a redshirt senior, Burton is looking to take part in the upcoming season.

Given the situation at right tackle, it would make sense for the Longhorns to kick the tires on Burton. He could likely start immediately once he gets acclimated to what the Longhorns do on offense. Last year’s right tackle Derek Kerstetter is being kicked inside to play center leaving the right tackle position open for the taking. While many felt that the starting right tackle job could belong to Denzel Okafor, Burton has the experience.

Burton received a 79.3 offensive grade last season for the Bruins. Samuel Cosmi was graded at 83.9. Kerstetter received a 71 offensive grade. The former three-star prospect will be looking for a home this fall and the Longhorns just might have the opportunity that the is looking for.
