Three instant takeaways from Florida’s shellacking at Texas in Week 11

It was not a pretty performance for the Orange and Blue on Saturday. Here are three instant takeaways from the running of the Longhorns over the Gators.

The Florida Gators and Texas Longhorns faced off for the first time on the college football field in 80s years in Week 11. On a sunny Saturday in Austin, the Burnt Orange scorched the Orange and Blue, 49-17, as [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s team had no answer for the home squad on either side of the ball.

The Gators struggled to contain the ‘Horns starting from the opening kickoff but miraculously held them to a missed field goal to keep things tied. Florida would punt on the next possession; Texas converted a fouth-and-one on its own 24-yard-line following that punt, leading to the game’s first score

Then things started to get out of hand.

Florida fumbled the ball at the end of the first quarter while Steve Sarkisian’s crew stepped on the gas; they would score on the next two possessions while UF missed a field goal from UT’s 12-yard line. After that, the rout was on.

Looking back at the spanking the Gators received from the Longhorns, there is a trio of particular points to note in the immediate aftermath.

Florida never had a chance

From the very first play, Texas controlled the tempo on offense and shrugged off the Gators out in the open field. That hiccup in the red zone turned out to be an outlier as the Longhorns did not leave many points off the board afterward.

The best chance Florida had to get back into this game came in Texas’ first two possessions of the second quarter which resulted in punts. After that, the Longhorns scored four straight TDs extending into the opening of the second half.

Florida, on the other hand, did not score until 7:03 in the third quarter; that field 23-yard-filed goal extended UF’s nation-leading streak of games without being shut out. So at least there is that.

Jaden Baugh is an absolute baller

On a roster that is missing dynamic playmakers like DJ Lagway and Eugene Wilson III, running back Jaden Baugh has emerged as a player with that dog in him. The true freshman was a bruiser on the ground even when things were looking dire — even taking a couple of snaps in the wildcat formation.

Additionally, he seemingly got stronger as the game went on leading up to his third-quarter touchdown in which he dragged several defenders over the goal line, giving the Gators something to feel good about.

Florida certainly misses Montrell Johnson’s work-horse reps, but Baugh’s multifaceted talents in the backfield and beyond cannot be understated. Heck, he also serves as the primary kick returner. What a guy.

Baugh’s day was over a play into the fourth quarter, but he still ran for 19 yards for 88 yards and a touchdown — good for a 4.6 yards-per-carry average. He also caught a pass for a seven-yard gain on one targeted throw.

Special mention to fellow running back [autotag]Ja’Kobi Jackson[/autotag], who amassed even bigger numbers than Baugh but was responsible for the early fumble that led to Texas’ second score. He finished with as many attempts as his backfield companion but managed to earn 116 yards (6.1 per) and a touchdown while also catching a pass for 13 yards.

Aidan Warner ain’t it at quarterback

With all due respect for the young redshirt freshman, Aidan Warner just does not have the chops to compete in the SEC. Of course, only in a disaster would one start a third-string walk-on quarterback and few people foresaw the voracious injury bug that has plagued the Swamp.

Well, Florida is in the midst of a roster disaster and there is seemingly little the coaching staff can do about it. One has to trust Napier and Co.’s judgment when evaluating him and transfer Clay Millen, but either way, when you include the attrition sustained at other skill positions, the Gators are in dire straits.

Napier did try the wildcat as mentioned above but it is going to take more than high school gimmick plays to earn two more wins this fall. Rushing Lagway back onto the field is a terrible idea, but something has to be figured out under center.

Next up for Florida

The Gators return to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium to host the LSU Tigers in college football’s Week 12. The Southeastern Conference matchup will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ABC.

Gators jump up USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank after Week 8

Florida cracks USA TODAY Sports’ re-rank top 50 after its homecoming win over Kentucky.

Florida football defended its home field on homecoming last weekend, routing the visiting Kentucky Wildcats, 48-20, en route to the Gators’ fourth win in seven tries this season and second in four Southeastern Conference matchups.

Not only did the Orange and Blue tag a W in the win column, both the offense and defense looked solid on Saturday night. Freshman quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag], who made his first SEC start with [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] out for the season, showcased his rocket-launcher arm; fellow freshman running back [autotag]Jaden Baugh[/autotag] rushed for five touchdowns, tying the Florida single-game record held by [autotag]Tim Tebow[/autotag] and Trey Burton.

The secondary also matched the team total for interceptions all last season in just one game, including a pick six.

As a result of the Week 8 triumph, Florida saw its stock rise in many of the polls and rankings, including USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg’s re-rank of all 134 FBS schools.

Florida’s Week 8 re-rank position

Myerberg came away impressed with the win but still is bearish on the Gators overall, lifting them 11 spots to No. 45 this week. That puts Florida between the No. 44 Tulane Green Wave and No. 46 Western Kentucky Colonels.

Billy Napier’s squad is ahead of four other SEC programs in the rankings, with the Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 53), Kentucky (No. 64), Auburn Tigers (No. 90) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 107) lagging behind.

USA TODAY Sports Week 8 re-rank top 10

The Oregon Ducks claimed the top spot this week after the currently second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs dethroned the now-seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns. The Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions and Miami Hurricanes, respectively, wrap up the top five.

Coming in sixth are Iowa State Cyclones, followed by Texas, the Clemson Tigers, LSU Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers, respectively, to cap the top 10.

Coming up for the Gators

The Gators are off next week due to their bye week. The next matchup for Florida will be against the Georgia Bulldogs on Nov. 2 in Jacksonville. That game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on ABC.

Florida flips 4-star ATH from Arkansas, adds to 2024 LOI signee list

This multi-purpose athlete could really mix things up on offense for the Gators as early as next fall.

Billy Napier and Co. are having a field day on Wednesday as Florida football secures its 2024 recruiting class on the opening day of the early signing period. It has been mostly good news for the Gators, and the latest entry just adds to the optimism.

Four-star athlete Jaden Baugh out of Decatur (Georgia) Columbia made his mark on his letter of intent, joining the ranks of the Orange and Blue on the big day. The news is bigger than just the name.

He had been committed to the Arkansas Razorbacks until earlier in the week when he backed away from from the Hogs. Led by the efforts of running backs coach Jabbar Juluke, Florida swooped in to land his talents, which are expected to be used at more than just the running back position.

“They talked with me a lot about (running back), but they also said I am very versatile, so I can play receiver, running back, and he said they use their running backs in the passing game, too,” Baugh told Swamp247. “They run the ball a lot, and you can see it. He said all weekend, numbers don’t lie. They had two running backs in the top 10 for rushing.”

He rushed for 1,583 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2023 plus 531 receiving yards and six more scores received.

For what it is worth, the Alabama Crimson Tide were also in serious contention for Baugh’s services. Instead, he chose the Swamp as his collegiate destination.

Baugh is ranked No. 382 overall and No. 17 at the athlete position nationally according to the 247Sports composite. The On3 industry ranking has him at No. 357 overall and 26 among running backs.

Three-star Arkansas commit is still listening to what Florida has to offer

Three-star athlete committed to Arkansas says he enjoyed his experience at UF, listening to what the recruiting staff has to offer.

The Florida Gators had a few special guests on the sidelines for its meeting with the Arkansas Razorbacks last Saturday.

One prospect, whom the Gators have as listed as a priority, is three-star Arkansas commit [autotag]Jadan Baugh[/autotag]. The 2024 recruit likes the environment in Gainesville and wants to make another visit.

Swamp247 asked the three-star about his experience in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

“It was a great atmosphere,” Baugh said. “It was very competitive, and it made me excited about watching the game today.”

Baugh is listed as an athlete on 247Sports, but it seems that the Gators would most likely use the multi-tool athlete as a running back. The Decatur, Georgia, native was observant of how the Gators utilized their running backs, Trevor Etienne and Montrell Johnson.

The three-star took time to speak with Florida running back coach Jabbar Juluke.

“It was great, I just told coach Juluke; I love seeing it in person rather than seeing it on TV to see how everything works behind the scenes,” Baugh said. “On TV, you only see highlights and stuff. I like seeing the whole game. They got me excited about what’s to come in the future.”

Florida head coach Billy Napier also spoke with Baugh, giving his pitch despite the overtime loss to Arkansas. When asked what was said, Baugh explained that the Gators are doing what they can to get him in Gainesville.

“Their main message to me is that they’re making me a priority and they want me to get back down here, and that’s what I did today,” Baugh said.

Baugh is labeled as a “hard commit” to Arkansas but is clearly still listening to what the scouts have to offer. The relationship between Baugh and the UF coaching staff is becoming stronger with each visit.

Arkansas gets commitment from four-star athlete from Georgia

Jadan Baugh is Arkansas’ 10th commit in the Class of 2024 and the seventh four-star player.

Jadan Baugh’s commitment to Arkansas on Friday was the 10th in the Razorbacks’ Class of 2024.

Baugh, a four-star athlete from Decatur, Georgia, chose the Hogs over Georgia, Florida, Louisville and others. Many of Arkansas’ competitor schools were recruiting him as a linebacker, but he’s expected to be a running back in Fayettville. That’s figured because Jimmy Smith, Arkansas’ running backs coach, was his primary recruiter. Smith is also Arkansas’ top recruiter in the state of Georgia.

At 6-foot-2, 197 pounds, Baugh brings a complete package style to Arkansas. With that height, he will be expected to put on pounds and could develop into a Rocket Sanders type.

He’s the first commitment to the class in almost a month. Back on April 21 and 22, coach Sam Pittman picked up three commitments in two days. Baugh is the seventh four-star recruit of the group.

Arkansas’ class is ranked No. 15 in the country for 2024.
