Will Nets’ play in Disney impact Jacque Vaughn’s head coaching candidacy?

Jacque Vaughn didn’t get to serve as Brooklyn Nets head coach for long before the COVID-19 pandemic. He’ll get another shot in Orlando.

Ty Lue. Jason Kidd. Jeff Van Gundy. Mark Jackson. Tom Thibodeau. Phil Handy.

All of these individuals share something in common: they’ve been reported as candidates to take over as the next head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. (Gregg Popovich’s name was thrown in, as well, though it wasn’t a report.)

Then there’s Jacque Vaughn, who seems to be the only in-house candidate, having taken over head coaching duties for the remainder of 2019-20 since the Nets and Kenny Atkinson parted ways. Though he’s only had the chance to serve as head coach for two games due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

But now Vaughn is getting the opportunity to prove he can handle the heat with the NBA set to resume play on July 31 at Disney Worl and the Nets in position to make the playoffs.

Will any of what goes on in Orlando make a difference, though? Should it?

It absolutely should make a difference, but that doesn’t mean Brooklyn has to run the table. The Nets are still without Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Earning the seventh seed and having a competitive first-round series against either the Toronto Raptors or Boston Celtics should be the expectations this year. The Nets can’t go through the motions under Vaughn simply because they’re without their two stars — but Brooklyn still has to set a realistic goals.

The bigger question is still, can any of this have an impact on Vaughn’s candidacy either way?

Given what happened in March to the head coach who helped lead the Nets out of the basement and the fact half a dozen candidates for the position have already been revealed, no.

If Durant and Irving want Vaughn to stay, going winless in the first round of the playoffs in Orlando isn’t going to change their mind if he’s their guy. Same thing goes if the Nets somehow have a ton of success in Disney.

Something major would have to happen, either way. Otherwise, everything up to this point indicates the organization won’t keep him if he’s not the individual Durant and Irving want as head coach.

What Sean Marks is looking for in Nets’ next head coach

The search for Brooklyn’s next head coach is on pause for now. However, Nets GM Sean Marks already knows what he wants from the position.

Even though Kenny Atkinson won’t be able to reap the benefits of all his hard work as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, the franchise wouldn’t be in a position to succeed like it is now without him.

Sean Marks knows this and has no problem admitting that’s the case. But when the franchise and Atkinson had a mutual parting of ways in early March, it became abundantly clear the Nets general manager was looking for something different at the head coach position.

Jacque Vaughn didn’t get much of a chance to prove he can fill the role permanently due to the league’s hiatus in response to the novel coronavirus outbreak, but he could still vie for the position.

It all comes down to whether or not Marks feels Vaughn can fulfill the duties the next Brooklyn head coach will be tasked with. The Nets GM explained how things have changed since last time he needed to hire a head coach in a conversation with Chris Carrino that was broadcasted on the Brooklyn Nets app.

It certainly differs, but it differs because the organization is in a different place now. It’s in a much different place than it was four years ago. … As we move into this next stage, we’ll be looking for a leader, for a leader of men. Somebody that can take this group and continue what we’ve already built upon and have relationships with the players. Understand what this organization is at the precipice of and who the key players here [are] — I don’t just mean that by the players on the court. Who the players are in the organization. They need to have an understanding of the performance team, of our ownership group and so forth. And all the things that go into taking this and taking the Brooklyn Nets to another level.

During the interview, Marks also noted he would like to see Vaughn get a chance to further prove himself. Vaughn was set to be head coach for the remainder of 2019-20 upon Atkinson’s departure.

Report: Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving want a ‘big name’ at head coach

When the NBA went on hiatus, Jacque Vaughn was the interim head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. But that may not last past 2019-20.

Jacque Vaughn was head coach of the Brooklyn Nets for only two games before the NBA went on hiatus due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. He may get another chance to prove he’s the right coach for the franchise’s next phase, so long as the NBA tries to at least play the 2020 playoffs.

But even if the league does pick up play and things go well under Vaughn, there’s no guarantee he becomes the permanent head coach.

According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, Brooklyn’s two star players — Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irivng — want a well-known name calling the shots on the sideline.

One of the things that has been expressed sort of the grapevine … is that Durant and Irving would like a blue chip coach. I don’t know what this says about the way they thought about [Kenny] Atkinson, but they want a big name coach.

Windhorst and others discussing the matter on the ‘Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective‘ podcast would not bring up individuals who currently have head coaching jobs as options. Those who were mentioned that don’t currently have jobs included Jeff Van Gundy, Tom Thibodeau, and Mark Jackson.

Report: Sean Marks in a ‘holding pattern’ with Nets’ head coach search

The Nets made Jacque Vaughn interim head coach after parting ways with Kenny Atkinson. Some in Brooklyn want to see the interim tag removed.

The Brooklyn Nets haven’t played since March 10 — the day before the NBA went on hiatus due to concerns over the novel coronavirus outbreak. It was only the second game the Nets had played since the franchise parted ways with head coach Kenny Atkinson.

In his limited opportunities as interim head coach, Jacque Vaughn went 2-0, knocking off the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers. But as much he had already been a part of the organization, Vaughn hasn’t really had the chance to prove he’s the right person to guide Brooklyn through the new era of Nets basketball.

Yet, according to Alex Schiffer of The Athletic, “There are some people in Brooklyn who would really like to see Jacque Vaughn get a look as head coach, removing the interim title.” Also, others around the NBA feel Brooklyn’s interim head coach “checks a lot of boxes” with no “obvious candidate” the role of head coach in Brooklyn.

But the Sean Marks isn’t going to make a decision on Vaughn or any possible candidate until the season comes to a close — whenever that may be. At this stage, Marks “is in a holding pattern” with the search, per Schiffer.

Today in Nets history: Jacque Vaughn scores 22 against Magic

Long before Jacque Vaughn coached the Brooklyn Nets, he played for the franchise when it was in New Jersey.

With the NBA going on hiatus — which NBA commissioner Adam Silver set as at least 30 days on Thursday — and New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, placing a ban on gatherings of more than 500 people for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, no Brooklyn Nets games will be played for the time being.

For the Nets, as much as any team, this comes at an odd time — Brooklyn was battling the Orlando Magic for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference standings. At the stoppage of play, the Nets had a half-game advantage over the Magic.

Since there aren’t any games, each day Nets Wire will highlight major individual performances and key developments throughout Nets history.

Long before he was an NBA head coach, Jacque Vaughn spent two NBA seasons in New Jersey playing for the Nets alongside Vince Carter and Jason Kidd.

On March 13, 2005, that trio went off against the Magic, who Vaughn also coached after his playing days.

Carter led the charged with a 33-point performance on 10-for-19 shooting. He also knocked down 12 of his 16 free throws in the Nets’ 98-82 win.

Kidd scored 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had 10 assists. The walking triple-double also had five steals.

Vaughn, meanwhile, scored 22 points on 11-for-17 shooting (full box score).

“Jacque was huge, running the floor, active as heck and Vince getting to the line 16 times,” then Nets head coach Lawrence Frank said after the win.

The win was the start of a five-game winning streak for the Nets. Before facing the Magic, New Jersey trailed them for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference standings by five games. By the end of the winning streak, the Nets trailed the No. 8 Philadelphia 76ers by one game.

Oddsmakers weigh in on Nets’ next head coach

Could Kenny Atkinson stay in New York but coach for a different NBA team? Oddsmakers weigh in.

When 2019-20 comes to a close there’s no guarantee Jacque Vaughn will continue to be the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. When the organization announced he would take over for Kenny Atkinson, the Nets said Vaughn would hold the position for the rest of the season.

With that being the case, there’s been no shortage of speculation as to who will be the next Nets head coach. The NBA media has weighed in and thrown around names like Mark Jackson and Tyronn Lue, the latter of which coached Kyrie Irving in Cleveland.

Oddsmakers have taken those individuals being considered and set a field for who will be Brooklyn’s next head coach.

BetOnline.ag has Lue as the favorite at 5/4 odds, with Jackson right behind him (2/1). SportsBetting.ag also feels Lue (+125) and Jackson (+200) are the two leading candidates for next head of the Brooklyn Nets.

Both sites feature Vaughn on their list of candidates — 6/1 odds on BetOnline and +600 on SportsBetting — but he’s fourth in both cases, trailing Jeff Van Gundy (5/1 on BetOnline, +500 on SportsBetting).

Also featured on both lists are Tom Thibodeau (7/1, +700), Jason Kidd (9/1, +900) and Brooklyn’s director of player development and assistant coach Adam Harrington (10/1, +1,000).

Both sports betting sites also presented fans with a question about Atkinson’s future.

BetOnline asked “Will Kenny Atkinson be Knicks head coach for the 2020-2021 NBA Season?” The odds have been set a 1/1 for “yes” and 5/7 for “no.”

SportsBetting asked a similar one, though slightly different: “Will Kenny Atkinson be the Knicks next head coach?” The difference here is the Knicks could easily move on from Mike Miller before Atkinson is ready to take a new job. This line has been set at -120 for both “yes” and “no.”

Every name tied to Nets’ head coaching job

The Brooklyn Nets may have the pick of the litter when looking for a head coach, assuming Jacque Vaughn doesn’t keep the job after 2019-20.

Before Jacque Vaughn got the chance to be the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets for one game, everyone was talking about who would take over at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season.

Although the Nets didn’t officially throw the “interim” label in front of Vaughn’s new title, by stating he will “serve as head coach for the remainder of the season,” Brooklyn opened the floodgates for speculation about who could be the franchise’s head coach in the era of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

And there’s been no shortage of names thrown around in the chaos. Here’s everyone who’s been mentioned as a possible candidate for Kenny Atkinson’s old job:

Mark Jackson

Stephen A. Smith rattled off three names on Monday, and Jackson was one of them.

Rich Kleiman, Durant’s manager, is a fan of Jackson, as well. And as much as the Nets continue to say no players had a hand in Atkinson’s departure, they’re definitely going to play a part in finding his permanent replacement.

Jacque Vaughn on first win as Nets head coach: ‘I’m just glad for the guys’

Jacque Vaughn had all eyes on him in his first game as the Brooklyn Nets’ head coach, but he was focused on his players.

As much as the game was interesting in itself, especially with how the Nets almost let things slip away, all eyes were on Kenny Atkinson’s replacement for the remainder of 2019-20, Jacque Vaughn.

Not only because Vaughn had taken over as head coach, but because he also made an interesting move prior to Sunday’s 110-107 win. He started DeAndre Jordan and removed one of the staples of Brooklyn’s starting lineup for the past two seasons, Jarrett Allen.

“Both bigs were really good in their roles today,” Vaughn told reporters after the win.

But Vaughn still got his first win as head coach of the Nets. Something he wanted to get more for his players rather than himself.

“I’m just glad for the guys that they were able to get back on the floor,” Vaughn said. “Get back to what they enjoy doing, love doing: competing and playing the game of basketball. At the end of the day, that was the best part of getting together and competing today.”

The Nets get back to “what they enjoy doing” on Tuesday when they visit the Lakers in Los Angeles at 10:30 p.m.

Nets win first game under Jacque Vaughn

Jacque Vaughn decided to start DeAndre Jordan over Jarrett Allen on Sunday, and both responded well in the Brooklyn Nets’ win.

Jacque Vaughn’s first move as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets was a bit surprising — he elected to start DeAndre Jordan over Jarrett Allen.

Although the veteran big man has been more impactful of late, Allen has been a staple in the Nets’ starting lineup since last season.

Jordan responded by grabbing 15 rebounds, scoring 11 points and blocking three shots in his 29 minutes of action. Allen also did well with his 19 minutes of work, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds and a blocked shot.

Both of the Nets big men helped their teammates out-rebound the Bulls 50-31, en route to a 110-107 Nets win, Jacque Vaughn’s first as Nets head coach.

Spencer Dinwiddie led the Nets in scoring with 24 points. Joe Harris and Caris LeVert were right behind him with 23 points apiece.

Harris went 3-for-7 from deep and LeVert went 4-for-6. Dinwiddie knocked down 14 of his 15 free-throw attempts.

Taurean Prince came off the bench again while Wilson Chandler started. Prince scored seven points and grabbed nine boards.

Brooklyn Nets and Kenny Atkinson mutually part ways

The Brooklyn Nets and Kenny Atkinson mutually parting ways is a surprising move.

The Brooklyn Nets will be changing coaches for the last 20 games of their season.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Nets and coach Kenny Atkinson are parting ways. The Nets’ Twitter account announced that the decision is mutual between both parties, and assistant coach Jacque Vaughn will be the interim head coach.

The Nets currently have a record of 28-34 and sit at seventh place in the Eastern Conference. Atkinson began coaching the team in the 2016-17 season, and he has a record of 118-190.

Heading into the season, high expectations weren’t placed on the Nets. Their big season wasn’t supposed to happen until 2020-21, when Kevin Durant was supposed to be back from his torn Achilles.

This season has had its challenges, with Kyrie Irving missing time due to a right shoulder impingement. Irving re-aggravated the shoulder in February, and he recently had successful surgery.

Despite the challenges, it’s surprising that Atkinson and the Nets are parting ways. Atkinson helped lead the Nets to the playoffs last season, and their only All-Star was D’Angelo Russell.

The Nets will play the Chicago Bulls at the Barclays Center on Sunday, with tipoff slated for 3 p.m. EST.
