Jaguars allow 5 players’ practice squad contracts to expire

Five players who were on the Jaguars’ roster in 2023 became free agents Monday.

Last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars secured the rights to 11 players from their practice squad by signing them to reserve/future contracts. On Monday, five players who finished the 2023 season with the team were allowed to become free agents.

The following players are no longer on the Jaguars roster, per the NFL’s transaction wire:

  • RB Snoop Conner
  • WR Jacob Harris
  • DT Henry Mondeaux
  • C James Murray
  • QB E.J. Perry

Conner is the only player on the list who was drafted by the Jaguars. The 2022 fifth-round pick appeared in eight games as a rookie, and had 12 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown. Conner spent the entire 2023 season on the practice squad.

Harris appeared in two games as a standard elevation from the practice squad, but was never targeted as a receiver. The majority of his snaps came on special teams, although that included a missed tackle on kickoff coverage that helped spring the Houston Texans’ Andrew Beck for a 90-yard touchdown.

Other players across the NFL who had their practice squad contracts expire Monday included former Jaguars players Keelan Cole, Sidney Jones, Matt Overton, and Matthew Wright.

Jaguars elevate WR Jacob Harris from practice squad again

Jacob Harris played 24 snaps in Week 3 and the Jaguars are bringing him up to the active roster again in Week 4.

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jacob Harris is getting elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for a Week 4 game in London against the Atlanta Falcons.

Harris, 26, was elevated in Week 3 for a game against the Houston Texans and played seven offensive snaps and 17 snaps on special teams.

The Jaguars already ruled out wide receiver Zay Jones for Sunday and listed receiver and return specialist Jamal Agnew as questionable. The team also has rookies Parker Washington and Elijah Cooks on the active roster, but listed both players as inactive in each of the first three weeks of the season.

On Thursday, Jaguars special teams coordinator Heath Farwell was complimentary of Harris, although he also said the receiver was part of the reason Texans fullback Andrew Beck broke free for an 85-yard kickoff return.

“He’s done a good job as a gunner and we’re hoping to get him up more often,” Farwell said of Harris. “Unfortunately, he was on the backside on that kickoff coverage which was a little disappointing for me. But he’s a guy that cares and wants it so bad and he was one of those guys that was diving in there trying [to recover a fumble].

“He wants to make a play, it’s his first time being up in a long time, and he hadn’t played since he was with the Rams a million games ago. He’s just trying to make a play, and part of coaching is getting these guys settled down, letting the plays come, and they will come when we let them come to us.”

Harris was a fourth round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, but only caught one pass in two seasons with the team.

According to NFL rules, a player may be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster no more than three times. After that, Harris would need to be added permanently to the 53-man roster to be available for games.

Jaguars’ Tim Jones prepared to step up with Zay Jones out

Doug Pederson says the Jaguars will look to Tim Jones more in Zay Jones’ absence.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without wide receiver Zay Jones on Sunday for a Week 3 game against the Houston Texans due to a knee injury.

To fill the void, the Jaguars moved veteran receiver Jacob Harris from the practice squad to the active roster. But the bigger beneficiary from the ‘next man up’ philosophy may be Tim Jones.

“That’s a big one, he’s a big part of what we’re doing,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said Wednesday of the loss of Zay Jones. “Tim Jones has had some playing experience for us and can fill that role quite nicely. Zay is a physical receiver who does some of the blocking for us as well, Tim has done that before and what not. Tim will get some work if Zay can’t go.”

Tim Jones, 25, first joined the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent after the 2021 NFL draft and spent the majority of his rookie year on the team’s practice squad. A year later, he showed enough in camp to make the team’s final 53-man roster.

Now in his third year in the NFL, Jones has three career receptions for 30 yards. While Sunday could be an opportunity to add to his receiving totals, it was business as usual for the receiver on the practice field.

“It doesn’t necessarily change what I do, because I prepare the same way every week,” Jones said Friday. “In my role, I have to know every single position just in case anything were to happen on the field. … I’ll just stick to what I’ve been doing and see what happens.”

There’s no shortage of options for the Jaguars offense with eight wide receivers and three tight ends on the active roster following the elevation of Harris. But Jacksonville has scratched rookies Parker Washington and Elijah Cooks in the first two weeks and probably won’t be able to fill Zay Jones’ role with Jamal Agnew.

“We’re fortunate in that we have versatile pieces,” Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor said Thursday. “We have guys like Tim [Jones], guys like [Agnew] that provide different elements.”

Through the first two weeks of the 2023 season, Calvin Ridley leads the Jaguars in targets with 19. Christian Kirk has 17 while Evan Engram and Zay Jones have 13 each.

Jaguars elevate WR Jacob Harris to active roster with Zay Jones out

The Jaguars moved veteran receiver Jacob Harris to the active roster with Zay Jones ruled out.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are elevating veteran wide receiver Jacob Harris from the practice squad to the active roster for a Week 3 game against the Houston Texans, the team announced Saturday.

The decision comes a day after Zay Jones was ruled out for Sunday due to a knee injury suffered in a Week 2 loss.

Harris, 26, was signed by the Jaguars in May after impressing in a minicamp tryout. He continued to stand out in training camp practices as well as preseason where he made one of the most impressive plays of any player in August.

While Harris didn’t make the final 53-man roster, the Jaguars brought him back to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.

Prior to his stint in Jacksonville, Harris was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft. But in two seasons with the team, he caught just one pass for six yards.

The Jaguars now have eight receivers on the active roster after the move, although rookies Parker Washington and Elijah Cooks were both healthy scratches in the first two weeks.

Jaguars practice squad tracker: 17 signings announced

The Jaguars finalized their initial 17-man practice squad Wednesday and Thursday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars set their 53-man roster Tuesday and finalized their 17-player practice squad Wednesday and Thursday.

While practice squad players aren’t eligible to play on Sundays unless they’re elevated to the active roster, keeping them gives the Jaguars a chance to develop a player or keep them in the building in the event that injuries open an opportunity.

Last season, the Jaguars got meaningful contributions out of defensive tackle Corey Peters, who spent time on the practice squad before moving up midseason. This year, Jacksonville has cornerback Gregory Junior on the active roster after giving the 2022 sixth-rounder a year to grow on the practice squad.

Here’s the Jaguars’ initial 2023 practice squad:

18 recently cut players the Colts should consider adding

The Colts will have plenty of options to choose from on the waiver wire.

The Indianapolis Colts officially set the initial 53-man roster before Tuesday’s deadline, but more changes to the group are expected to come.

With over 1,000 players being waived and released in one fell swoop Tuesday afternoon, the Colts will have a strong chance to claim as many players as they want from the waiver wire.

They hold the No. 4 spot in the order and there’s no limit to how many claims they make as long as they can make the corresponding moves to satisfy the 53-player limit.

General manager Chris Ballard is typically a pretty active member of the waiver wire the day following roster cuts.

Here are a few names the Colts should consider adding either through free agency or through the waiver wire:

6 players cut by the Jaguars least likely to clear waivers

The Jaguars waived 27 players Tuesday. Which of those players are likely to get scooped up by another team off the waiver wire?

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived 27 players Tuesday in their effort to trim the roster from 90 players to 53.

While the team would love to have its pick of those players when it constructs its practice squad, the Jaguars’ may not be so lucky. There’s a strong chance a handful of the team’s former players won’t be available after hitting the waiver wire.

Jacksonville will only have the chance to sign players to its practice squad after every other team has decided not to put in a waiver claim. For these six players, there’s a strong chance that won’t happen:

The Jacksonville Jaguars have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET to trim their 90-man roster to 53 players ahead of the 2023 regular season.

That could be especially difficult for the team this year after accumulating talent that made the Jaguars owners of one of the NFL’s deeper rosters from top to bottom. The depth of the team could also mean that the Jaguars negotiate a trade or two before the Tuesday deadline:
