Giants minicamp: Notes, videos and highlights from Day 1

News, notes, highlights and a few videos from Day 1 of the New York Giants’ 2023 mandatory minicamp.

After canceling their final two practices of organized team activities (OTAs) due to poor air quality, the New York Giants were back at it on Tuesday. This time for their mandatory two-day minicamp.

Running back Saquon Barkley, who has not yet signed his franchise tender, is not permitted to take part in team-related activities and was not in attendance per NFL rules. He will not be fined for his absence.

On the schedule were press conferences with the team’s defensive assistants, head coach Brian Daboll and assistant general manager Brandon Brown. Select players also spoke with members of the media following a two-hour practice.

Here’s a look at some notes, highlights and videos from Day 1.

The Dallas Cowboys started their week by bringing in seven players for a look—and among them was a former Carolina Panthers quarterback.

Jacob Eason worked out for “America’s Team” on Monday. The 25-year-old passer was released by the Panthers back on May 18.

Eason cracked into the pros as a fourth-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. He appeared in his first NFL game in Week 2 of the 2021 campaign—when he completed two of his five passes for 25 yards and a pick against the Los Angeles Rams.

After being waived by the Colts later that season, and then by the Seattle Seahawks in the summer of 2022, Eason landed in Carolina at the start of last season. In what would be his lone outing for the Panthers, the 6-foot-6, 231-pounder mopped up to finish off the Week 6 loss to the Rams (again)—where he threw for 59 yards and an interception.

The Carolina Panthers are back under the 90-man roster limit.

As officially announced on Thursday afternoon, quarterback Jacob Eason and wide receiver Preston Williams have been released. This brings the team’s current count to 88.

Eason, a fourth-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, was claimed off waivers by the Panthers from the Seattle Seahawks prior to the start of the 2022 campaign. The 6-foot-6, 231-pound passer, in his lone appearance for Carolina, came in to relieve PJ Walker during the Week 6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams—where he threw for 59 yards and an interception.

Williams joined the Panthers not too long after Eason, signing on as a practice squad member on Sept. 5, 2022. He was active for just one game this past season, as he logged nine snaps—two on offense and seven n special teams—in the victorious finale against the New Orleans Saints.

Panthers sign QB Jacob Eason to reserve/future deal

The Panthers have signed QB Jacob Eason to a reserve/future deal.

The Carolina Panthers have signed a quarterback!

Okay, maybe it’s not the splashy kind of name fans have been hoping for under center. Nonetheless, the team—as announced on Tuesday morning–has inked Jacob Eason to a reserve/future deal.

Eason, a University of Washington product, cracked into the league as a fourth-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in the 2020 draft. Following a pair of seasons at the University of Georgia, where he started 12 games in 2016, the Lake Stevens, Wash. native moved back home—where he passed for 3,132 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions before his jump to the pros.

The 6-foot-6, 231-pounder appeared in his first NFL game in Week 2 of the 2021 campaign—when he completed two of his five throws for 25 yards and a pick against the Los Angeles Rams. Eason would be waived by the Colts later on that season and was quickly scooped by the Seattle Seahawks, where he lasted until the summer of 2022.

And that’s where the Panthers came in, claiming him off waivers from Seattle on Aug. 31. His lone appearance of the 2022 season came in Week 6 against, coincidentally, the Rams—a relief outing in which he connected on three of his five chucks for 59 yards and another interception.

Here’s why Cowboys working out QB, WR ahead of Packers game is significant

For very different reasons, two visitors to The Star on Friday bring a ton of intrigue to the Cowboys. | From @KDDrummondNFL

All eyes are glued to their devices, feverishly refreshing their social media pages to see if there’s an update on the OBJ Watch. For now, Odell Beckham, Jr. remains a free agent, no matter how many members of the Dallas front office or roster mention his name. While that works its natural course, the front office is remaining diligent in looking for ways to improve the roster.

Every week, clubs around the NFL bring in street free agents to see if there’s anything out there worthy of bringing in to the fold. Dallas did the same on Friday, working out two players at offensive positions. And there may be more than meets the eye here.

Panthers signing QB Jacob Eason to practice squad

The Panthers are set to add former Colts and Seahawks QB Jacob Eason to their practice squad on Wednesday.

Just minutes after Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule eerily foreshadowed an impending quarterback addition on Wednesday afternoon, some pretty pertinent news hit.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the team is set to sign former Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jacob Eason to their practice squad.

Carolina suffered from two critical quarterback injuries over the last two weeks, losing Matt Corral (foot) for the season and Sam Darnold (high-ankle sprain) for 4-6 weeks. Because of that, the team was forced to keep PJ Walker on the 53-man roster despite his struggles throughout training camp.

Eason (6-foot-6, 231 pounds) was selected by Indianapolis in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He has seen extremely limited playing time since, throwing just five regular-season passes in his professional career. Still, at just 24 years old, Eason is younger than Walker and could develop into a capable backup at some point.

And if the name sounds familiar, maybe it’s because he tossed this beautiful deep pass against the Panthers in their 2021 preseason matchup:

Eason is now the 15th known member of the practice squad, leaving one more spot in the group open.

Watch: Seahawks coach Pete Carroll tries his hand at QB at practice

Watch head coach Pete Carroll make a few throws at practice.

The Seahawks might have the most pathetic quarterback situation in the NFL this year, at least according to some folks. If Geno Smith and Drew Lock both don’t work out, they could always rely on their new scout-team QB…

Highlights from Bears win over Seahawks Thursday night

Here’s a look at some of the highlights from the Chicago Bears 27-11 win over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Thursday night.

The Seattle Seahawks lost their only home game of the preseason to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.

The Seahawks’ play was sloppy at best in front of a national audience and Drew Lock – who was inactive due to COVID-19 – missed a major opportunity to spring ahead in Seattle’s quarterback competition.

After Geno Smith got the start, third-string QB Jacob Eason came in in the second half and was able to put some points on the board. It was too little too late, however, and Chicago flies home with the 27-11 win.

Below are some of the highlights from Thursday night.
