Oklahoma spurned as four-star running back Dylan Edwards chooses Big 12 foe Kansas State

After leading the race at one point for his services, the Sooners ultimately miss out on the commitment of four-star Dylan Edwards.

Oklahoma has had a rough go of it with some of their targets of late,  this time getting a little more bad news with Dylan Edwards’ commitment to Kansas State. While it’s important to note that the Sooners can’t ultimately sign everyone, missing out on some still stings.

Edwards joins a list of Wilkin Formby, Tyler Turner, and Reid Mikeska as players Oklahoma was targeting and missed out on in the last few days.

The four-star running back was the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Kansas in 2021. He totaled 3,214 all-purpose yards and 40 total touchdowns while averaging almost 13 yards a carry last year. The Sooners offered Edwards on January 29th and shortly after receiving the offer told Kansas City Star reporter Kellis Robinett that “Oklahoma has been a dream of mine.”

While that may have been true somewhere along the way, there was a disconnect between both sides as the Sooners didn’t land Edwards who opted to stay in-state and play for the Kansas State. With the Wildcats he will most likely draw comparisons to current running back Deuce Vaughn and KSU legend Darren Sproles. Edwards, like Sproles and Vaughn, is a small, shifty, dynamic, and fast running back.

Oklahoma landed multiple predictions to land Edwards in the days and weeks following the initial offer and continued to apply pressure. They made the top 10 list for Edwards along with Kansas State, Nebraska, Washington, Jackson State, Oregon and a few others. Ultimately, after his official visit on June 3rd for the Champ U BBQ, and a few weeks to deliberate the in-state school won out.

The Sooners have four-star Kalib Hicks and will be looking to fill one more spot at running back for this 2023 class. As it stands with names like Tre Wisner and Dylan Edwards out the picture, Daylan Smothers becomes one of the priority targets for the Sooners.

Smothers has taken his official to Oklahoma and enjoyed himself quite a bit. A Florida State official is up next for him but the Sooners are closer in this race than they were with Edwards, giving them a much better shot here to land the four-star dynamo from North Carolina.

Five-star can’t miss prospect Richard Young is very much a take if he decides to be a Sooner. While that is a long-shot, the Sooners should continue to hang around and recruit him. Crazier things have happened like Louisville landing five-star running back Reuben Owens this week.

The state of Kansas will continue to be a place the Sooners attack on the recruiting trail as head coach Brent Venables played and coached at Kansas State himself and has maintained excellent relationships throughout the state.

Sooners make Top 10 for 2023 four-star running back Dylan Edwards

Oklahoma makes the top 10 list for explosive and shifty 2023 four-star running back Dylan Edwards from Kansas.

Official visit season is underway for the 2023 class in the world of college football recruiting. With that we’ll begin to see recruits narrow their focus a bit to fit their official visit list. Four-star running back Dylan Edwards joined in on the fun and dropped his list of the top 10 schools he’ll be focused on going forward.

Oklahoma makes the cut along with Jackson State, led by NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, Kansas State, Washington, Wisconsin, Oregon, Nebraska, Missouri, Kentucky, and Kansas. The Kansas provide proximity to his hometown of Derby, while Oklahoma, Oregon, and Wisconsin represent the biggest brands on the list. Jackson State made the cut and reportedly has a great relationship with Edwards and his family as well. Deion Sanders has made a big impact on the recruiting scene since becoming the head coach of the HBCU school.

Edwards took the time to break down his reasoning for every school in an interview with 247Sports. He said this about the Sooners:

“Boomer Sooner. That was my dream school since I was little. I loved the spring game and every time I was there. I can’t wait to be back on my OV. I just talked to Coach [DeMarco] Murray, and we’re going to set it up.” via Parker Thune, OUInsider at 247Sports.

That’s a pretty solid endorsement that the Sooners are very much in the thick of this race. The Sooners look poised for an official visit and would breathe a little easier if they could land the shifty and explosive running back from out of Kansas. The Sooners currently have no running backs committed for 2023, and after missing out on Tre Wisner to their Red River rivals, they need this commitment to land in their favor.

The Sooners seemingly will not have to wait long either for Edwards’ decision ultimately, as he plans to spend the entire month of June on his officials before deciding shortly after.

Deion Sanders snags Kevin Coleman Jr., another elite recruit for Jackson State

Deion Sanders lands another mega-recruit for Jackson State, WR Kevin Coleman Jr.

Prime Time Deion Sanders has added another elite recruit to his Jackson State Tigers.

The former NFL star and Hall of Famer will have wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. in his offensive huddle next season.

The St. Mary’s HS (St. Louis) star announced his decision Saturday at the All-American Bowl and former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant was impressed.

“I see everything he [head coach Deion Sanders] is doing and I want to be a part of it,” Coleman told SI All-American. “Coach Prime, to be coached by a person who has done it before. Why not? He can teach me. He did it on both sides, he did it on special teams and he is a great person with great character.”

It was believed Coleman was considering  Oregon, USC, Florida State, and Miami. However, he stunned everyone.

Coleman is the No. 4 WR in the Class of 2022, No. 44 overall.

Coleman will join Travis Hunter, the nation’s top recruit in the Class of 2022, at Jackson State.

Deion Sanders’ son Shilo makes pick in Celebration Bowl

If it felt like people at the Celebration Bowl were in a time machine no one could blame them.

In the city where Deion Sanders made so many picks, the College and Pro Football Hall of Famer was coaching Jackson State against South Carolina State in Saturday’s Celebration Bowl.

And in classic “Prime Time” fashion, his son, Shilo, wearing the same digits his father did through a glorious career, picked off a South Carolina State pass.

We’re sure it made Deion a proud dad.

Deion Sanders earns major FCS coaching honor

Deion Sanders has won the Eddie Robinson Award as best FCS coach

Jackson State coach Deion Sanders can add another honor to his star-studded resume.

The Pro and College Football Hall of Famer was named winner of the Eddie Robinson Award, which is presented to the national coach of the year in the Division I subdivision (FCS).

Sanders led the Tigers to 11 wins in 2021 and a berth in the Celebration Bowl against South Carolina State. The game will take place on Saturday in Atlanta.

“This is a team effort, it’s a valiant effort, it takes a lot, it does not just take me. I know it takes a visionary, but people have to really support the vision. And that’s what we did,” Sanders said.

Jackson State is 11-1, including 9-0 against conference opponents.

An average of 42,293 fans attended six home games – a single-season record for an FCS school.

One of 17 finalists for the award, which is named for legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson, Sanders will be honored at the FCS National Awards Banquet on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas.

Deion Sanders leads Jackson State to 53-0 win in coaching debut

Deion Sanders led Jackson State to a 53-0 victory in front of former Cowboys teammate Troy Aikman

As head-coaching debuts go, Deion Sanders and Jackson State could not have found a softer opponent, which led to a predictably successful result.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back led the Tigers against NAIA school Edward Waters on Sunday at Mississippi Veteran Memorial Stadium. Jackson State went on to a 53-0 victory over a school that was coming off a 1-10 season.

Sanders had an unexpected visitor in another Hall of Famer. Former Dallas Cowboys star Troy Aikman was in attendance.

Aikman and Sanders played together on the Cowboys from 1995-99 and won the 1995 Super Bowl. Aikman received a COVID-19 test before heading down to the field.
