Deion Sanders forbids Jackson State players from leaving Houston hotel after rapper Takeoff’s killing

Deion Sanders is keeping his Jackson State players in their hotel after rapper Takeoff was killed in Houston

Deion Sanders and his undefeated Jackson State team are heading to Houston for a game Saturday against Texas Southern.

Houston is where Takeoff of the famed rap group Migos was killed during a dispute over a dice game early Tuesday.

Sanders is not taking any chances. He has told his Tigers players they are forbidden from leaving the team hotel.

“Takeoff was murdered in a dice game in Houston — where we’re going,” Sanders said in a team meeting Tuesday. “So, that eliminates all y’all leaving that hotel, ’cause it ain’t happening until I give you further notice.”

Sanders explained his rationale:

“You cannot kick it with the same dudes you kicked it with,” he said. “You cannot associate in the same realms that you associated with. You gon’ have to change if you expect change.

“I’m sad because it always seems like it’s us, but we wanna say we matter, we wanna say we keep it 100, but it’s always us!”

COLUMN: When football is good in Louisiana, it’s good for LSU

When there’s a lot of football talent in the state of Louisiana, LSU is the beneficiary.

The tradition of football in the state of Louisiana is strong. From LSU to Tulane to Southern, this sport runs deep within the state’s blood.

LSU is lucky in the sense that it doesn’t have a natural rival in the state. There’s not another Power Five school in Louisiana.

However, there are 11 Division I programs in the state that play football (New Orleans is the lone school to not have the sport), including five at the FBS level.

Along with LSU, there’s Louisiana, ULM, Louisiana Tech and Tulane. At the FCS level, there’s also Grambling, McNeese, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Southeastern and Southern.

This weekend, Southern is set to travel to Jackson State, where ESPN’s College GameDay pregame show will also be in attendance. It’ll be GameDay’s first trip to an HBCU and first trip to an FCS school since 2019.

The spotlight will be on Deion Sanders and Jackson State. After all, the Tigers have earned it. To many, Southern will be nothing but an afterthought on Saturday.

But the Southern helmet is still going to sit in front of that ESPN desk on national television for three hours on Saturday morning. A lot of people that don’t know the school exists suddenly will.

When Southern faced LSU in September, it was beneficial for the city and the state. LSU knows that, too. It’s why the Tigers continually schedule these in-state schools and run camps together.

Whether the reasons are selfish or not, LSU wants these schools to be good at football. More good football players in the state — whether at the high school or college level — means there’s a better chance more good football players end up at LSU.

Imagine what this LSU secondary would look like if it weren’t for [autotag]Mekhi Garner[/autotag] transferring from Louisiana and [autotag]Colby Richardson[/autotag] coming from McNeese.

We can talk about [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag] too, a wide receiver who joined Garner from Louisiana.

It’s not a bad time for the state right now.

  • LSU is 6-2 and coming off its most significant win yet.
  • Tulane is 7-1, ranked and contending for a spot in the NY6.
  • Southern is riding a four-game win streak and is 3-1 in conference play.
  • Northwestern State is 3-0 in conference play

There are some struggles at other spots. Grambling has yet to win a conference game and Louisiana is in the midst of a rebuild, but those programs have strong foundations that can be worked with.

Jackson State will most likely get the win on Saturday, but Southern is a competent team, and I expect the Jaguars to be in this game. More eyes will be on this game than usual. It would be a big deal if Southern were to roll into Jackson and beat Deion’s team.

In the state of Louisiana, few things are of more importance than football. On LSU’s bye week, take some time to check out some other things happening in the state.

Where is ESPN’s College GameDay this week? Not Penn State

ESPN announces destination for College GameDay in week 8.

When Penn State plays Ohio State, it is far from uncommon for ESPN to bring its traveling pregame show, College GameDay, to the campus hosting that year’s game. The Penn State-Ohio State matchup is tied for the most times being featured by GameDay (Alabama-LSU has also been featured 11 times). But this week will not see the GameDay bus roll into State College ahead of Penn State’s big home game against the Buckeyes. Instead, GameDay is heading elsewhere.

ESPN announced GameDay will instead be heading to Jackson State for its big rivalry game with Southern. It is the first time in program history GameDay is heading to an HBCU school on its season-long tour, but it should not be much of a surprise to see Jackson State being the school to finally bring GameDay to an HBCU.

With Deion Sanders as the head coach, Jackson State has been on the college football map like never before. The Tigers are off to a 7-0 start this season and games have rarely been close. The leaders in the SWAC East Division will host Southern, the leaders in the SWAC West Division.

Southern’s only two losses this season came against LSU and Texas Southern. The Jaguars are looking to get back to the SWAC Championship Game for the first time since 2019 and win its first conference championship since 2013. Jackson State won the SWAC title last year under Sanders in his first season as the head coach.

If there is one thing we know, it is that Sanders loves to live in the spotlight, and it is awesome to see Sanders find a way to bring the ESPN spotlight to an HBCU program and the HBCU world of college football as a whole.

So for now, Penn State’s 10th time hosting College GameDay will likely have to wait until next season at this point. The Ohio State game is the biggest game remaining on the home schedule for the Nittany Lions.

ESPN College GameDay heading to Deion Sanders, Jackson State

ESPN College GameDay will be at Southern-Jackson State on October 29

The Deion Sanders impact at Jackson State is in full force.

The Tigers are 7-0, 4-0 in the SWAC’s East Division, and heading into a rivalry game against Southern, which is 5-2 and leads the conference’s West Division at 3-1.

The game will attract national attention and the hype will be on Saturday as ESPN has announced College GameDay will be heading to Mississippi to set the scene.

Snoop Dogg on hand as Jackson State improves to 7-0 by downing Campbell

Snoop Dogg was in attendance as Deion Sanders and Jackson State improved to 7-0

Deion Sanders has Jackson State marching toward an undefeated season.

The Tigers took another step on Saturday, defeating Campbell, 22-14.

This game was different than others as it saw Jackson State in a tussle rather than its familiar offensive outbursts.

Still, the Tigers found a way to win despite struggling inside the Campbell red zone.

Jackson State settled for a trio of field goals on trips inside the Camels’ 10.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders had a solid, if unspectacular game, going 23-of-31 for 231 yards and a TD.

Four of those passes went to heralded freshman Travis Hunter, who missed the previous five games. Those receptions went for 24 yards.

The Camels were limited to 247 yards of total offense by a staunch Tigers defense.

There was a celebrity in attendance to watch Coach Sanders’ team:

Up next for JSU is a game against Southern.

Deion Sanders has Jackson State 6-0 for first time since 1983

Deion Sanders and Jackson State are 6-0 after clobbering Bethune-Cookman

It is Prime Time for the Jackson State Tigers.

Deion Sanders’ team is 6-0 for the first time since 1983 after clobbering Bethune Cookman, 48-8, on Saturday.

The coach’s son, Jackson State quarterback Shedeur Sanders, threw for 272 yards and 5 touchdown passes as the Tigers improved to 4-0 in the SWAC.

Jackson State was up 30-0 in the second quarter of the romp.

Shane Hooks and Dallas Daniels each had two TD receptions.

Jackson State dominated the stats with 26 first downs to 10 for Bethune Cookman.  It outrushed its overmatched foe 224 yards to 39.

Bethune Cookman is now 1-5 and 1-2 in conference play. It had to have four players throw passes in the loss.

Eddie Robinson Jr., Deion Sanders disagree on who is SWAC

What sparked the bad feelings between Eddie Robinson Jr. and Deion Sanders?

Emotions flowed after Jackson State’s win over Alabama State on Saturday.

There was an ugly exchange between Hornets coach Eddie Robinson Jr. and Deion Sanders of the Tigers after Jackson State’s 26-12 victory.

Robinson Jr. said after the game felt the Pro Football Hall of Famer had disrespected his team and himself throughout the week, including game day.

“I thought there was a lot of disrespect the whole week and so your not going to be disrespectful all week in the media,” Robinson said. “We didn’t talk in the pregame I was out there the whole time at the 50-yard-line. He walked through our huddle on our end zone, he came the long way around to get to his side during the pregame, thought that wasn’t classy at all.

“Postgame I’m not going to give you the Obama bro hug, I’m going to shake your hand and go on I’m always going to be respectful and respect the game. … I’m living on the shoulders of the SWAC, he ain’t SWAC, I’m SWAC, so he’s in the conference and doing a great job, can’t knock that. … You’re not going to come here and disrespect me and my team and my school and then want to bro hug me, shake my hand and get the hell on.”

Sanders didn’t appreciate hearing he wasn’t SWAC, the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

“If I ain’t SWAC, then who is SWAC,” Sanders said three times. “Baby, who is?”

Sanders speculated there could be a number of reasons Robinson Jr. was perturbed.

“It could be a plethora of things,” Sanders said. “I think he thought he was going to get a win. I don’t know why he would’ve ever thought that. … Secondly he said that I didn’t come to greet him in the center of the field. I don’t know if you understand but we got here very late. So that expedited our whole process of preparation. So then we were in like, ‘let’s go get it (mode).”

The Alabama State coach wants a rematch next year.

“I pray he don’t get a Power 5 job and we play them next year in Jackson,” Robinson Jr. said, “and I pray they put us for their homecoming.”

Deion Sanders’ son, Shedeur, stars as Jackson State blasts Florida A&M

Jackson State obliterated Florida A&M behind Shedeur Sanders’ 5 TD passes

Florida A&M players have problems off the field with the way school authorities have handled numerous situations. It didn’t help Sunday when the Rattlers faced Deion Sanders’ Jackson State Tigers in Florida.

One of Sanders’ sons, Shedeur Sanders, completed his first 17 passes en route to a 29-of-33 performance as Jackson State crushed Florida A&M, 59-3.

The Rattlers are 0-2 in a turmoil-filled season. They had no answer for Shedeur Sanders, who threw 5 TD passes in more than three quarters of action.

Florida A&M has been outscored 115-27 in two games, losing its opener despite a valiant effort against North Carolina.

Shedeur Sanders is a 6-foot-2, 215-pound sophomore. He led Jackson State to its to first SWAC East Title since 2013, and first SWAC Championship since 2007, last season.

2023 safety from Lake Wales, Florida Jaremiah Anglin picks up Oklahoma offer

The Oklahoma Sooners look to add to their defensive backfield with an offer to 3-star safety Jaremiah Anglin out of Florida.

Despite their recent recruiting success in July, Oklahoma is focused on adding more to their 2023 class. They’ve likely finished up adding to their offensive line, and they’ve already gotten their quarterback, but one area that could see some more bodies is the safety spot.

With that in mind, it makes sense why they felt the need to offer 2023 three-star safety Jaremiah Anglin out of Lake Wales, Florida. Anglin stands 6-foot-1, plays on the offensive side of the ball, and also is a basketball player, so he is quite the athlete in his own regard. Anglin also has a notable connection to one of the NFL’s most talented defenders, as Anglin is the cousin of former Florida State Seminoles safety turned Los Angeles Charger Derwin James.

His tape shows an athlete that looks extremely comfortable playing as the deep safety and coming up to make plays in run support. His athleticism allows Anglin to showcase a great feel for angles and route recognition. He displays excellent ball skills which makes sense considering he has experience playing on both sides of the ball.

Brandon Hall has been active recruiting safeties since the moment he’s gotten here. While he’s landed Erik McCarty, it’s pretty obvious from the sheer volume of offers that the Sooners are far from satisfied. Anglin looks like a player the Sooners would love to keep monitoring and see if they can put themselves in a good spot in his recruitment as the fall comes around.

Jaremiah Anglin’s Recruiting Profile

Projections

  • Rivals Futurecast: Florida State is leading the way for Anglin.
  • On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine: Florida State dominates the predictions at the time at 88.9 percent.
  • Early crystal ball projections favor Florida State.

Oklahoma spurned as four-star running back Dylan Edwards chooses Big 12 foe Kansas State

After leading the race at one point for his services, the Sooners ultimately miss out on the commitment of four-star Dylan Edwards.

Oklahoma has had a rough go of it with some of their targets of late,  this time getting a little more bad news with Dylan Edwards’ commitment to Kansas State. While it’s important to note that the Sooners can’t ultimately sign everyone, missing out on some still stings.

Edwards joins a list of Wilkin Formby, Tyler Turner, and Reid Mikeska as players Oklahoma was targeting and missed out on in the last few days.

The four-star running back was the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Kansas in 2021. He totaled 3,214 all-purpose yards and 40 total touchdowns while averaging almost 13 yards a carry last year. The Sooners offered Edwards on January 29th and shortly after receiving the offer told Kansas City Star reporter Kellis Robinett that “Oklahoma has been a dream of mine.”

While that may have been true somewhere along the way, there was a disconnect between both sides as the Sooners didn’t land Edwards who opted to stay in-state and play for the Kansas State. With the Wildcats he will most likely draw comparisons to current running back Deuce Vaughn and KSU legend Darren Sproles. Edwards, like Sproles and Vaughn, is a small, shifty, dynamic, and fast running back.

Oklahoma landed multiple predictions to land Edwards in the days and weeks following the initial offer and continued to apply pressure. They made the top 10 list for Edwards along with Kansas State, Nebraska, Washington, Jackson State, Oregon and a few others. Ultimately, after his official visit on June 3rd for the Champ U BBQ, and a few weeks to deliberate the in-state school won out.

The Sooners have four-star Kalib Hicks and will be looking to fill one more spot at running back for this 2023 class. As it stands with names like Tre Wisner and Dylan Edwards out the picture, Daylan Smothers becomes one of the priority targets for the Sooners.

Smothers has taken his official to Oklahoma and enjoyed himself quite a bit. A Florida State official is up next for him but the Sooners are closer in this race than they were with Edwards, giving them a much better shot here to land the four-star dynamo from North Carolina.

Five-star can’t miss prospect Richard Young is very much a take if he decides to be a Sooner. While that is a long-shot, the Sooners should continue to hang around and recruit him. Crazier things have happened like Louisville landing five-star running back Reuben Owens this week.

The state of Kansas will continue to be a place the Sooners attack on the recruiting trail as head coach Brent Venables played and coached at Kansas State himself and has maintained excellent relationships throughout the state.
