Wisconsin basketball class of 2024 signees Daniel Freitag and Jack Robison arrive in Madison

Wisconsin basketball class of 2024 signees Daniel Freitag and Jack Robison arrive in Madison

Following a hectic spring transfer window and overall offseason, Wisconsin’s men’s basketball team is poised for a reboot this fall.

The program experienced its fair share of movement since the end of the 2023-24 season.

Star forward AJ Storr, fan-favorite point guard Chucky Hepburn and streaky shooter Connor Essegian transferred elsewhere while veteran forward Tyler Wahl graduated after five seasons representing UW.

While the departures appear notable, Greg Gard and company will welcome six new faces to the Kohl Center for Wisconsin’s 2024-25 campaign.

Power forward Xavier Amos, point guard Camren Hunter and guard John Tonje rounded out the Badgers’ transfer portal acquisitions while Serbian signee Andrija Vukovic, point guard Daniel Freitag and guard Jack Robison, will don the scarlet and red as freshmen during the 2024-25 season.

Two of the three first-year contributors, Freitag and Robison, arrived in Madison to begin their collegiate journeys this week.

Freitag, a 247Sports’ No. 104 player in class of 2024, No. 11 point guard and No. 3 recruit from his home state of Minnesota, will likely fill the void left by Hepburn following his transfer to Louisville.

As one of 2024’s most coveted prospects, Freitag can make an immediate impact for Gard’s platoon this season and beyond.

Robison, another Minnesota native, was 247Sports’ No. 145 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, the No. 34 SF in the country, and the No. 3 player in Minnesota when he committed to UW.

The 6-foot-6, 175-pound wing is a left-handed three-level scorer who is especially dangerous from the perimeter. He figures to contribute to UW’s bench unit as a freshman with potential to become a mainstay on the outside.

Although both Freitag and Robison have established strong links to Wisconsin’s staff after the signing process, the two officially begin their tenure as Badgers this summer.

Jack Robison, a Wisconsin men’s basketball signee, moved up to third on Lakeville North Basketball’s all-time scoring list following his senior season.

The 247Sports three-star committed to the Badgers’ program on Nov. 11, 2023, after being recruited by head coach Greg Gard and assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft. The 6-foot-6 small forward visited UW five times from October 2021 to October 2023.

The Lakeville, Minnesota native also snagged offers from Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Iowa and South Florida.

Robison’s high school is notorious for producing future Wisconsin men’s basketball players. Nate Reuvers, a member of the 2019 Big Ten title team, started over 100 games for Greg Gard. Fifth-year player Tyler Wahl and freshman big man Nolan Winter also donned the Panthers’ uniform before collegiate hoops.

Through March 15 of this past season, Robison averaged 21.9 points per game off 52.5% from the field. The future Badger could bolster Wisconsin’s wing next season alongside Max Klesmit and AJ Storr.

2024 PG Daniel Freitag announces his college decision

Daniel Freitag, a four-star class of 2024 point guard from Jefferson, Minnesota announced that he has committed to join the Badgers.

Daniel Freitag, a four-star class of 2024 point guard from Jefferson, Minnesota announced that he has committed to join some of his fellow Minnesotans to play college basketball.

The 6-foot-2 athlete chose to head to Madison and play for Greg Gard and his Badger squad. Fellow Minnesota natives like Steven Crowl (Eagan, MN) and class of 2023 recruit Nolan Winter (Lakeville, MN) are amongst the players from his state that will likely be his teammates at Wisconsin.

Freitag is set to play for Southern California Academy for his final season of high school basketball in 2023 before joining the Badgers. He is the 10th ranked point guard in his class and could end up being the greatest recruit that Greg Gard has reeled in.

Additionally, he became the second player to commit to Wisconsin for the class of 2024, joining three-star Jack Robison (Lakeville, MN) in Madison.

Badgers in contact with three-star class of 2024 forward from Texas

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team has been in contact with three-star class of 2024 power forward Dillon Battie.

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team has been in contact with three-star class of 2024 power forward Dillon Battie. The 6-foot-8 athlete from Lancaster, Texas still has one more season of high school basketball before he’d potentially make the leap to the collegiate level.

Battie has received seven Division 1 offers and Wisconsin could be set to join teams like Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Texas Tech in offering him. Typically, the Badgers find most of their recruiting success in the Midwest, namely the state of Minnesota, so it’s nice to see Greg Gard and his staff widen their net.

So far for the class of 2024, Wisconsin has received the commitment of three-star forward Jack Robison from Lakeville, Minnesota.

Wisconsin lands a commitment from 2024 wing Jack Robison

Coach Gard and his staff have received their first verbal commitment of the 2024 recruiting cycle:

Madison, Wis. – Wisconsin Badgers head coach Greg Gard and his staff landed their first piece of the puzzle in the 2024 recruiting class – from UW’s feeder program, Lakeville North in Minnesota.

Following an official visit this past weekend, three-star wing Jack Robison verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin on Tuesday, making him the fourth Lakeville North player to commit to the Badgers in the past six years.

“I’ve always kind of known that is where I wanted to be,” Robison said. “So I was debating whether I was going to commit going into the weekend, and this weekend just reassured me with everything.”

“It was the right time for me. I couldn’t be more happy to be a Badger.”

Per the 247Sports recruiting rankings, Robison is the No. 145 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, the No. 34 SF in the country, and the No. 3 player in Minnesota.

Coach Gard offered the 6-foot-6, 175-pound wing a scholarship last August, making UW the first power-five scholarship offer for the Minnesota native – and he never took his foot off the gas pedal, continually making him a priority.

The three-star forward also held offers from Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, South Florida, and St. Thomas.

Scouting Report

On film, the Lakeville North High School standout is a left-handed three-level scorer who is especially dangerous from the perimeter. Robison is a microwave from beyond the arc.

He’s also made noticeable strides physically and as a playmaker who can put it on the deck and get to his pull-up mid-range jumper.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the weight room this summer, and I’ve gotten a lot quicker and more explosive,” Robison explained.

Robison’s length and positional versatility obviously appeal to coach Gard, who puts a premium on players capable of defending multiple positions.

On top of the measurables, he’s another player who isn’t afraid to mix it up, take a charge, and get on the floor after a loose ball – yeah, he’s a Badger.

In short, Robison checks a ton of boxes for the program, is nowhere near his ceiling, giving him plenty of room to develop, and stylistically, is a perfect fit at Wisconsin.

The Minnesota native announced his verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin via his Twitter account:

2024 three-star wing Jack Robison previews his early official visit to Wisconsin

Could Jack Robison be the next Lakeville North player to commit to the Wisconsin men’s basketball program? @DillonGraff has the latest:

When 2024 three-star wing Jack Robison out of Lakeville North, Minnesota, takes his early official visit to Wisconsin on October 21, it’ll be an opportunity to strengthen his already rock-solid relationship with Greg Gard and the Badgers coaching staff.

“My relationship with the staff is great,” Robison explained. “I talk on the phone with coach Gard very often, and coach Krabbenhoft is my lead recruiter, so I speak to him quite often as well.”

Per the 247Sports recruiting rankings, Robison is the No. 145 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, the No. 34 SF in the country, and the No. 3 player in Minnesota.

Coach Gard offered the 6-foot-6, 175-pound wing a scholarship last August, making UW the first power-five scholarship offer for the Minnesota native. Since then, he’s picked up offers from Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, South Florida, and St. Thomas.

His high school teammate at Lakeville North, three-star power forward Nolan Winter, recently committed to play for the Badgers and will join the program in 2023. Will that commitment have any impact on Robison’s future?

“I’m super happy for Nolan making his decision, it wasn’t an easy one for him, but he made the decision based on what he felt was best for him,” said Robison. “I could definitely see myself playing with Nolan in college; we’re best friends. I don’t want to make my decision based on where he is, but if we can play together, that would be fun.”

On film, the Lakeville North High School standout is a left-handed knockdown shooter out on the wing who has made noticeable strides physically and as a playmaker.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the weight room this summer, and I’ve gotten a lot quicker and more explosive,” Robison explained.

Robison’s length and positional versatility are especially appealing to coach Gard, who puts a premium on players capable of defending multiple positions. In short, this recruit checks a lot of boxes for the program.

“I’m looking to join a team with a winning culture, somewhere where winning is the expectation,” Robison told Badgerswire. “Obviously, Wisconsin checks that box, so I can definitely see myself there.”

2024 wing Jack Robison is becoming a priority recruit for Wisconsin

Wisconsin was quick to reach out to this 2024 wing when first eligible on June 15:

On June 15, college basketball coaches were finally able to initiate contact with sophomores from the 2024 recruiting class, per NCAA recruiting regulations. This is significant for schools like Wisconsin which have a tendency to quickly identify under-the-radar prospects and aim to close out their recruitment before the bigger schools get involved.

As it stands, Greg Gard and his coaching staff currently have eight scholarship offers out in a highly anticipated 2024 recruiting cycle for UW.

Once contact became legal, one of Wisconsin’s first phone calls went out to shooting guard Jack Robison out of Lakeville, Minnesota.

“I was able to talk to both Coach Gard and Coach Krabbenhoft. We talked about the Badgers advanced camp that I’ll be attending on June 30th, and possibly taking an official visit later this year,” Robison told BadgersWire.

Coach Gard offered the 6-foot-5, 175-pound wing a scholarship last August, making UW the first power-five scholarship offer for the Minnesota native. Since then, Robison has seen his recruitment take off and has picked up offers from Minnesota, Nebraska, and St. Thomas.

“I also heard from  Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa St, Oregon st, Xavier, Northern Iowa, Colorado State, Utah,  Loyola Chicago, Princeton, St Thomas, and Appalachian St.”

The Lakeville North High School standout is a lanky knockdown shooter, with some expanding playmaking ability out on the wing. Robison’s length and positional versatility are especially appealing to UW who put a premium on players capable of defending multiple positions. In short, this recruit checks a lot of boxes for the program.

It’s still early in the sophomore’s recruitment, and even though Robison is nowhere near a decision, he knows exactly what he’s looking for in a high-major program. “The top things I’m looking for in a school are my relationship with the coaching staff, the way I’d fit in with the playing style, and culture,” said Robison.

Wisconsin has strong ties to the Lakeville North program up in Minnesota, this is no secret. They’ve had alumni such as Nate Reuvers and Tyler Wahl suit up for the Badgers and enjoy successful careers. Now, the Badgers are attempting to extend that pipeline by adding 2023 F Nolan Winter and 2024 SG Jack Robison into the fold.

“I could definitely see myself playing for Coach Gard and Wisconsin. Having Tyler Wahl and Nathan Reuvers come through my high school and seeing them succeed at UW is definitely appealing. I could also see myself fitting in the play style and culture,” Robison said in a previous interview with BadgersWire.

Coach Gard and the Badgers are currently in a terrific spot with the un-ranked wing. Associate Head Coach Joe Krabbenhoft is acting as the lead recruiter for Robison’s services and has an excellent track record with Midwestern players. Also, it doesn’t hurt that Coach Krabbenhoft is an alum of Robison’s current AAU program (Howard Pulley) – the familiarity there is important.
