Questad goes 150th; Bohrofen taken in sixth by Blue Jays

A signee and a current Razorback outfielder went to the Twins and Blue Jays, respectively, in the fifth and sixth rounds.

Wisconsin’s Gatorade Player of the Year and Arkansas signee Dylan Questad was taken with the 150th overall pick on Monday afternoon by the Minnesota Twins.

He will have a decision to make, but it’s likely that he will take the $412,600 slot value and go through the minor league system for the Twins.

In the sixth round, the Toronto Blue Jays selected Arkansas outfielder Jace Bohrofen with the 184th overall pick.

His .312 batting average and 16 home runs were vital in the Razorbacks winning the Southeastern Conference title and hosting a regional.

The pick slot value for Bohrofen is $304,700, so he has a decision to make but all signs point to him taking it and joining the Blue Jays’ farm system.

Two Diamond Hogs earn All-Region honors

Smith, Bohrofen Earn ABCA/Rawlings All-Region honors

Hagen Smith and Jace Bohrofen received All-Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings.

Smith is on the South All-Region first team, and Bohrofen is on the second team.

Smith completed his sophomore season as the 32nd All-American in the program’s history. The southpaw took the mound 18 times with 11 starts, boasting an impressive 8-2 record with a 3.64 ERA, 102 strikeouts, and two saves over more than 71 innings.

Smith is the first Razorback starting pitcher to receive first-team All-Region recognition from the ABCA/Rawlings since Isaiah Campbell in 2019. Kevin Kopps earned first-team All-Region recognition in 2021 as a relief pitcher.

During SEC play, Smith was versatile, assuming various roles in 11 appearances with five starts, resulting in a 5-1 record with a 3.07 ERA and 65 strikeouts over 44 innings while limiting opposing batters to a .201 batting average.

For earning First Team All-Region honors, Smith is eligible for the ABCA/Rawlings All-America team, which will be announced on June 16 before the start of the College World Series. He has already earned All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball

Bohrofen played a crucial role in the Razorback offense, with an impressive .318/.436/.612 slash line, 16 home runs, and 52 runs batted in across 60 games. He led the team in various offensive categories, including batting average (.318), runs scored (54), hits (68), doubles (15), home runs (16), and total bases (131).

Bohrofen performed exceptionally well in the SEC with a .288/.394/.541 slash line, seven home runs, and 20 RBI over 30 games. He is the first Razorback outfielder to receive All-Region recognition from the ABCA/Rawlings since Heston Kjerstad in 2019.

Arkansas falls to South Carolina in game two

Despite Saturday night’s loss, Arkansas still has a half-game lead in the SEC standings going into the series finale.

Brady Tygart was as good as advertised, but South Carolina was just a little better.

The Gamecocks took the second game of the series on Saturday night at Baum-Walker Stadium, 3-1.

Sunday’s rubber game will be the final regular season home contest.

Will McEntire relieved Tygart and ran into some trouble early but eventually settled down and held the visitors in check.

The problem was the Razorback bats never got untracked off Gamecock ace Jack Mahoney.

They did score a run late on a Jace Bohrofen RBI single but it was to no avail.

Despite the loss, Arkansas maintained a half-game lead in the SEC thanks to LSU’s loss to Mississippi State and a game lead on both Vanderbilt and Florida.

Arkansas tosses two-hitter, takes Game 1 vs Mississippi State

Arkansas’ staff had trouble working, well, out of trouble all season. Not on Friday.

Arkansas’ pitching staff has largely been middle-of-the-pack in the SEC this season.

On Friday, though, the triumverate of Hagen Smith, Cody Adcock and Gage Wood gave the Diamond Hogs perhaps one of their better games of the season. They combined for a two-hitter in Arkansas’ 6-2 win at Mississippi State to open the series in Starkville.

Smith worked the first five innings and gave up both hits and runs. The first came on an RBI single in the fourth after a walk and a hit batter. The second run after two walks and a single loaded the bases, Mississippi State scored on a wild pitch.

The second run tied things as Arkansas scored its first two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run by Jace Bohrofen. Brady Slavens broke the tie in the sixth with a two-run shot and the Diamond Hogs tacked on two more in the ninth on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Kendall Diggs.

Arkansas’ staff’s stuff wasn’t their best of the season. Mississippi State walked eight times, too. But working out of the trouble had been a Razorbacks issue all season. The Bulldogs ultimately left nine runners  onbase.

Caleb Cali had the best day at the plate for Arkansas, collecting three hits in four at-bats with a double and a run. No other Razorbacks hitter had more than a knock.

Arkansas will look to take the series on Saturday when the teams meet at 6 p.m.

No. 6 Arkansas knocks off Texas A&M to snap three-game SEC skid

Jace Bohrofen hit a two-run, tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning to lift the Diamond Hogs.

Things simply hadn’t gone Arkansas’ way in the last week.

Until Thursday.

The No. 6 Razorbacks snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-5 win over Texas A&M on Thursday from Baum-Walker Stadium. The victory boosted the Diamond Hogs to three games up in the win-column from the Aggies and Alabama in the SEC West. Arkansas is two games back in the loss column from LSU, though the teams are tied in wins.

Thursday’s win nearly wasn’t.

Jace Bohrofen deposited a two-run home run in the eighth inning over the right field to break a 5-all tie, a tie that came only after Arkansas squandered a 5-0 lead.

Razorbacks’ hitters chased A&M starter Troy Wansing after just three innings. Wansing allowed all five runs by walking six and giving up five hits. He also threw a wild pitch. Arkansas tagged him for those five all in the second inning.

The Aggies responded in the fourth with two home runs. A two-run job by Jordan Thompson was followed two batter later with a solo shot from Hunter Haas. In the fifth, Texas A&M tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Hagen Smith dominated from that point on. The starter-turned-closer for Arkansas threw four innings, giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out four to pick up the victory.

The teams pick things back up Friday night, weather permitting, with first pitch of Game 2 scheduled for 6 p.m.

Arkansas outfielder Jace Bohrofen named national Player of the Week

Bohrofen homered in four straight games last week and helped the Razorbacks to a 5-0 record.

When Arkansas lost outfielder Jared Wegner, a midseason All-American, to injury a couple weeks ago, a small bit of concern entered when it came to the Diamond Hogs’ lineup.

So far, such concern has not borne fruit.

Jace Bohrofen, who starts in the opposite outfield corner from Wegner, has picked up and then some. He was named Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week after slashing .375/.476/.1.188 with four home runs, a double and nine RBI to lead Arkansas to a four-win week, including a three-game sweep of Tennessee to close the first half of SEC play.

Bohrofen hit a pair of homers against Little Rock, one in each game, then hit one in the opener of the series against the Volunteers and another in Game 2 to provide himself with four straight games with homers.

For the season, the Oklahoma City product, a transfer from Oklahoma is in the top 15 in the SEC in batting average at .402 (fourth) and on-base percentage at .533 (fourth). He’s 11th in slugging at .750. Bohrofen has also been hit by 12 pitches and clubbed 10 home runs.

Arkansas hosts Central Arkansas on Tuesday before hitting the road for a series at Georgia on the weekend as the first-place team in the SEC West.

Diamond Hogs are middle of the SEC pack in everything statistically, so how are they atop SEC West?

It’s easy to say “Dave Van Horn” when trying to explain how the Diamond Hogs are 8-4 in SEC play. Numbers tell the story better.

There isn’t a lick special about this year’s Arkansas baseball team.

And yet.

And yet Dave Van Horn’s bunch finds itself inside the top in the country, atop the SEC West table and a legitimate national title contender. They’re 10th in the SEC in hitting and on-base percentage, ninth in slugging. They’re eighth in earned-run average, ninth in batting average-against and 12th in strikeouts.

Good luck explaining just how Arkansas is 8-4 at nearly the halfway point of league play, then.

But also, if you’re an Arkansas fan, does it matter?

Probably not. Not right now, anyway. The Diamond Hogs have won three of their four SEC series this season and are 26-6 overall with no losing streak longer than two games, and even those came against LSU, the No. 1 team in the nation.

A common refrain heard around this time of year is “Dave Van Horn.” In his 21st season with the Razorbacks, he’s been here a time or two. With seven College World Series appearances in that time, he’s not exactly short on experience.

Arkansas needs all of that it can get. It’s easy to forget, what with the glimmering record, seven of the nine regular hitters are in the first year as starters. Among the rotation guys, only Hagen Smith and Will McEntire have experience in that role.

So how is Arkansas this good, actually? Let’s take a look at some of the numbers that might help explain things.

Diamond Hogs strike early, hold off Louisiana Tech in series opener

Arkansas hit a pair of two-run homers in the second inning to put Louisiana Tech in a hole from which the Bulldogs would not recover.

Arkansas’ final weekend warm-up ahead of SEC play is off to a good start.

The eighth-ranked Diamond Hogs dispatched Louisiana Tech on Friday night, 7-4, to start the teams’ three-game set from Baum-Walker Stadium.

Hagen Smith, Arkansas’ ace, worked five innings, giving up just two runs while striking out seven. His offense staked him early to allow for some wiggle-room.

Jace Bohrofen and Parker Rowland each hit two-run home runs in Arkansas’ four-run second inning. Brady Slavens scored on a fielder’s choice in the third to build Arkansas’ early lead to 5-0.

The Bulldogs tagged Smith for two runs on four hits in the fifth and Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn went to his bullpen to start the sixth. Cody Adcock allowed another run in that frame, but Arkansas tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth via a Kendall Diggs sacrifice fly.

Bohrofen, Diggs and Tavian Josenberger each had two base hits for Arkansas, while Peyton Stovall drove in the team’s other run outside of the homers and Diggs’ two.

The teams are back at it Saturday for a 2 p.m. matinee.

Bohrofen has a day in Arkansas’ sweep of Wright State

Hunter Hollan was sturdy and Jace Bohrofen had a dynamite game in Arkansas’ sweep of Wright State on Sunday.

Nine home runs in three games is quite the tally.

Arkansas is quite the team.

The Diamond Hogs hit two home runs Sunday against Wright State to bring their series tally to nine in a 6-2 win over the Raiders that allowed for a sweep. The win is Arkansas’ fourth straight.

Jace Bohrofen took his turn to have a dynamite day on Sunday. The outfielder went 3 for 4 with a solo home run to break a 1-all tie in the sixth and he finished with 3 RBI, tacking on a two-run single in the eight.

Parker Rowland also went yard, his second of the year, to lead off the scoring in the seventh. Arkansas would score four in the inning and bat around as Rowland hit into a fielder’s choice for the final out of the frame.

Hunter Hollan was steady on the mound for the Razorbacks. He pitched six innings and gave up just a single run while striking out five. Koty Frank and Cody Adcock finished things off for the final three innings.

Jared Wegner and John Bolton also had RBI singles for the Diamond Hogs.

Arkansas is back quickly when Army visits on Tuesday.
