Florida running backs coach nominated for Broyles Award

Florida running back coach is being recognized as one of the best assistants in college football with a Broyles Award nomination.

Florida’s running back room has consistently produced for the past three years under position coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] and now he’s being recognized as one of the nation’s top assistants.

On Tuesday, Juluke was nominated for the Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coaches. He’s one of 65 nominees in the class, selected out of approximately 1,500 coaches across 131 FBS programs.

“The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches,” according to the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation official website.

Two former Florida coaches have finished as finalists for the award — defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Dan Quinn in 2012 and wide receivers coach Dwayne Dixon in 2001.

Jabbar Juluke at Florida

Juluke followed Billy Napier to Florida after four years on his staff at Louisiana. Under Juluke, Florida has produced 11 200-yard rushing games, and his 2024 position room has combined for more than 1,500 yards and 20 total touchdowns.

He recruited both Montrell Johnson Jr. and Trevor Etienne, one of 15 running back duos to rush for more than 700 yards apiece in 2022. His latest success story is four-star freshman Jadan Baugh, who has led the position room with 522 yards and seven touchdowns while Johnson battles injuries.

Johnson is still on pace to eclipse 500 yards with 494 on the year and two more games to play. Junior college transfer Ja’Kobi Jackson has also contributed greatly with 401 yards and six touchdowns. Both Jackson and Johnson are averaging 5.5 yards per carry, which would rank inside the top 50 nationally with more touches.

Frank and Barbara Broyles

John Franklin Broyles was a head football coach at both the University of Missouri (1957) and the University of Arkansas (1958-76) before transitioning into the athletic director role at Arkansas from 1974 to 2007.

More than 30 of his former players have gone on to coach in college or professional football, including five national championship winners — Hayden Fry, Joe Gibbs, Jimmy Johnson, Johnny Majors and Barry Switzer. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones played on Broyles’ 1964 national championship team at Arkansas.

His foundation, also named after his wife Barbara, aims to support caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. Barbara was diagnosed with the disease in 2005 and Frank succumbed to complications of Alzheimer’s in August 2017. The Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers has been translated into 11 languages and is distributed electronically across the world.

Billy Napier praises Jabbar Juluke’s impact on Florida’s football RBs

Gators head coach Billy Napier gave praise to Jabbar Juluke and the Florida football running backs during the SEC teleconference.

During Wednesday’s SEC teleconference, Florida football head coach Billy Napier talked about using this week’s bye as a time for improvement and getting players healthy.

However, the Gators head coach also highlighted the team’s running backs, particularly praising running backs coach Jabbar Juluke for the outstanding job he has done with the group.

“Well, Jabbar (Juluke), I think number one, Jabbar, was a high school coach, you know, and I think he has a unique, sincere care for players,” Napier said. “He does a great job mentoring the players, and runs a tight ship, you know. He does a nice job really modeling what you would want from the players, and then he holds them very accountable.”

Napier continued, “I never have to worry about the running backs, I mean, that group is always toeing the line, and they do it off the field, and they have great practice habits.”

As well as serving as the team’s running backs coach, Juluke is also the associate head coach and is currently in his third season with the Gators.

Napier and Juluke coached together at Louisiana from 2018-2021 before coming to Gainesville with Napier.

“He (Juluke) does a good job teaching, and he has got a framework for success,” Napier said. “I mean, I think obviously at Louisiana, we had three NFL backs. We were very productive there with the other players that we had, Chris Smith, Emani Bailey, not to mention the three NFL players, Trey Ragas, Elijah Mitchell, Raymond Calais.”

“And then we come here, we bring Montrell (Johnson) with us, obviously. And then Trevor Etienne, as a rookie, played well for us.”

Napier went on to praise Florida’s running backs room this season.

“And then these guys are the next, next generation, you know,” Napier said. “I think Jadan (Baugh) obviously stepped up for our team in a major way. And there’s a culture in that room. And I think you take guys like Montrell Johnson, they’re good examples to guys like Jadan Baugh who obviously has some ability.

“We got good solid play from Ja’Kobi (Jackson) as well. And we’re excited about potentially KD Daniels. KD, he’s starting to become, he’s getting healthier, I would say.”

Napier stressed the importance of maintaining player health and noted that several guys are nearing a return.

“So it’s a good room, you know, we got to keep them healthy,” Napier mentioned. “And obviously, Treyaun Webb is on that list as well, and he’s obviously closer to being available for the game. So (I) feel good about getting healthy over the next couple weeks with that group.”

Coming up for Florida

The Gators are off next week due to their bye week. The next matchup for Florida will be against the Georgia Bulldogs on Nov. 2 in Jacksonville. That game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on ABC.

Florida football gets commitment from this 4-star running back

Shortly after Florida received RPM pick from On3 for Daniels the Mississippi product became a member of the Orange and Blue.

Just hours after earning a pick from On3’s Corey Bender for his publication’s Recruiting Prediction Machine in favor of Florida football, the Gators closed the deal with four-star running back Kahnen Daniels out of West Point (Mississippi). Bender had put his confidence level at 75% when he submitted his pick earlier before Hayes Fawcett made the announcement early afternoon.

He is the sixth member of the 2024 recruiting class to sign on with the Orange and Blue.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 185-pound back has already made two trips to Gainesville so far, with the first coming back on March 11 when he received a scholarship offer during a campus visit. He made his way back to Hogtown on April 6 after generating further interest in the Orange and Blue following his initial stop, which resulted in his commitment on April 10.

“First off I loved how I just felt at home while I was there,” Daniels told Fawcett. “The times I visited stood out and I love what coach Napier does on offense. I feel like I will thrive in their offense.”

While Napier runs the show in the Swamp, the high school junior’s recruitment was spearheaded by associate head coach on offense and running backs coach Jabbar Juluke.

“The person I’m closest with is prolly Juluke,” he told On3. “Coach Juluke says he can’t guarantee that I will play, but I can work for a starting sport. I feel like that it’s not going to be easy but it’s something I could work for.”

The high school junior plans on being in attendance for this Thursday’s Orange and Blue game inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and has tentatively planned an official visit in June.

Daniels is ranked No. 358 overall and No. 35 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 309 and 25, respectively. Florida held two of his three crystal ball predictions from 247Sports and had an overwhelming lead in On3’s RPM with a 92.8% chance of landing him prior to his commitment.

Florida impresses No. 1 running back in class of 2024 during Junior Day

Florida is doing its best to get five-star running back and Gainesville native Jerrick Gibson back on board.

Before Billy Napier arrived at Florida, five-star IMG Academy running back [autotag]Jerrick Gibson[/autotag] was the shining pearl of the Gators’ 2024 recruiting class. After [autotag]Dan Mullen[/autotag] was axed, Gibson mulled things over and backed off that pledge, but he’s still giving the Gators a shot to earn back his commitment.

Gibson was in Gainesville Saturday for Florida’s final Junior Day of the January 2023 contact period. The entire month of February is a dead period for recruiting, so this visit served as the final word until spring trips begin in March. It was only his second time seeing the new facilities, and Gibson got a much better look than he did when he saw UF host USF in September, according to Gators Online.

“This was my second time visiting the new facility, so today was a surprise,” Gibson said. “The first time I didn’t see everything, but today I got to see everything and get around the facility. It amazed me how much stuff they have at the facility.”

He spent time with running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] and Napier going over what his role might be with the Gators. Juluke coached three players to 500-yard seasons or better in 2022, so Gibson doesn’t see himself struggling to find playing time.

[autotag]Montrell Johnson Jr[/autotag]. could be in the NFL by the time Gibson gets on a college campus, [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] will be one year away from becoming draft-eligible and [autotag]Treyaun Webb[/autotag] is the only scholarship back in the most recent class. A triumvirate of Etienne, Gibson and Webb might be elite, and quarterback [autotag]DJ Lagway[/autotag] will be on campus too.

Florida has plenty of catching up to do, but there is the hometown element weighing on Gibson. Before he wound up at IMG Academy, Gibson was playing for Gainesville High.

“It’s home,” Gibson said. “It’s always been home, so that’s one of the things they got up on everybody.”

In addition to UF, Georgia, Miami, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas are among the programs pushing hardest for Gibson. He’s hoping to take official visits over the summer, and one of those schools isn’t getting one. Florida has to figure out a way to make sure it’s not the odd man left out.

Gibson is ranked No. 11 overall and No. 1 among running backs on the On3 consensus. He broke the top 10 on the 247Sports composite, claiming the final spot with a .9941 rating.

Top 2024 RB prospect strongly considering Florida, talks January visit

A great impression made on his most recent visit to the Swamp has RB Anthony Carrie strongly considering the Gators.

One of the top running back prospects in the 2024 recruiting class reportedly has the Gators under “heavy consideration” to land his services.

Tampa native [autotag]Anthony Carrie[/autotag] is a four-star prospect and the No. 23 player in the state of Florida, according to the 247Sports composite. The Carrollwood Day running back recently visited Gainesville during the first week of January’s “contact period”.

Carrie had been on campus before but, according to 247Sports, was with a much smaller group this time around. This provided much more one-on-one time with the coaches and staff, which Carrie cites as being what he took away from this latest visit.

Running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] is spearheading Carrie’s recruitment and has been in constant contact with Carrie, even re-offering him last season after being initially offered a scholarship from the previous staff. The on-campus visit came the day after head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] was at Carrollwood Day on a recruiting trip, where Napier was able to get some facetime with the 6-foot, 185-pound standout.

Carrie currently has 12 schools on his list heading into his junior season. While a long list, Florida is confident that they are towards the top of the list given their relationship with Carrie and its proximity to home. Carrie even noted he wants to bring his family to Gainesville so that they may get a feel for the campus as well.

Carrie will make a visit to Penn State this weekend but did not disclose any other further visit plans to 247Sports.

Florida coaches visit Louisiana 3-star OT commit

Florida coaches were out and about earlier in the week, and a trio of them checked in with offensive line commit Caden Jones Monday.

A trio of Florida coaches visited De La Salle three-star offensive tackle [autotag]Caden Jones[/autotag], the lone unsigned commit in the 2023recruiting class, on Monday, according to 247Sports.

Jones committed after the early signing period, so he has to wait until national signing day to officially join the class. That means he could flip if another program pressed hard enough, which explains why Florida sent three staff members out to him once the contact period opened up.

Offensive line coaches [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] and [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] and running backs coach/area recruiter [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] have taken point on this recruitment. Juluke’s ties to the state of Louisiana have come in hand plenty of times during the Billy Napier era at Florida, and Sale and Stapleton will be Jones’ position coaches once he gets on campus. Napier’s staff recruited Jones while ULL too, so Jones is quite familiar with the group.

They went out to visit Jones because he is unsure if he’ll be able to get back on campus before signing day with a loaded basketball schedule.

Jones will join fellow linemen [autotag]Roderick Kearney[/autotag], [autotag]Knijeah Harris [/autotag]and B[autotag]ryce Lovett[/autotag] in the class of 2023 and should help add some depth to a position room that just lost four starters.

Gators to get visit from this 4-star RB this weekend

This blue-chip running back is among the three recruiting visits the Gators have this weekend.

The recruiting dead period comes to an end on Friday, opening the gates for Florida football to get back to full steam on the recruiting front. The first order of business is to open up the Swamp to visitors as the limitations on contact expire, with the Gators hosting three top prep prospects this weekend.

One of the names dropping in to pay [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and his staff a visit is four-star running back [autotag]Anthony Carrie[/autotag] out of Tampa (Florida) Carrollwood Day in the 2024 recruiting class, who makes his first appearance in Gainesville since last September. The 5-foot-11-inch, 186-pound back is currently being courted by Florida’s running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] and defensive analyst [autotag]Jamar Cheney[/autotag] – both of whom have maintained regular contact with him.

After his prior visit, the high school junior offered the following to Swamp247.

“It was good. I got to see them use the freshman running back [Trevor] Etienne. That was good. That was the main thing I picked up from the game is that they aren’t afraid to use a back early. If you can play, you will play. That was the main thing I saw. The backs played really well and they are being coached up really well. I wasn’t really worried about too much else. Florida is really lacking at the wide receiver position right now, and of course AR missed a couple of guys high. I felt like the backs played well and did their thing. They played a freshman and rotated their backs throughout each drive. That was cool.”

Along with the Gators, the Georgia Bulldogs, South Carolina Gamecocks, LSU Tigers and Michigan State Spartans — among others — are in contention for the young athlete’s talents.

Carrier is ranked No. 144 overall and No. 13 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 127 and 10, respectively. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has Georgia out front for the Tampa native with a 34.1% chance, while Florida is right behind them in second with a 22.6% chance of landing him.

Florida’s 4-star RB commit to get in-home visit from coaching staff

The coaching staff is set to hit the road to shore up this 2023 blue-chip recruit.

The calendar has turned over to December, which means the recruiting hot stove is about to be sizzling hot once again with the end of the no-contact period set to close. With the 2022 regular season now in the rearview mirror for Billy Napier and Florida football, a great deal of attention will be turned toward ensuring that the program maintains its top-10 ranking — or even possibly improving it.

One of the prep prospects on the coaching staff’s docket is committed four-star running back [autotag]Treyaun Webb[/autotag] out of Jacksonville (Florida) Trinity Christian Academy, who told Gators Online recently that he is set to host running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] along with another member of the staff at his home on Saturday.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 188-pound high school senior has a connection to the Orange and Blue through his cousin Dee Webb, who played defensive back in the Swamp from 2003 to 2005 and was taken in the sixth round of the 2006 NFL draft. Despite the blood link, the younger Webb insists he chose Florida over the likes of the South Carolina Gamecocks, Penn State Nittany Lions and Baylor Bears because of what it has to offer off the field as well.

“I chose Florida because of the education and the opportunities after football. I’ve felt a connection with the staff from the beginning and they truly care,” he previously told On3.

The in-state blue-chip recruit put up some big numbers during his final high school season in 2022, amassing 1,117 yards at 7.6 yards per carry along with 20 touchdowns. He made his first mark on the scene during the seventh grade when the Miami Hurricanes offered him a scholarship.

Webb, who is currently the only running back commit in the Gators’ 2023 recruiting class, is ranked No. 235 overall and No. 12 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 248 and 15, respectively.

Florida football still in mix for this 5-star offensive tackle

Florida still has hopes of landing an elite offensive tackle in the 2023 cycle, but it’ll take a very strong push down the stretch to get the job done.

Back in June, five-star offensive tackle Samson Okunlola named the Florida Gators to his top nine. Since then, programs like Alabama, Miami and Michigan State have taken center stage in the elite Thayer Academy (Brockton, Massachusetts) recruit’s process, but that doesn’t mean the Gators are out of the race entirely.

The Gators are still actively pursuing Okunlola, according to a report from 247Sports. The team sent assistant offensive line coach [autotag]Darnell Stapleton[/autotag] and running backs coach [autotag]Jabbar Juluke[/autotag] to stop by his school during the bye week, and they pushed the idea of early playing time in the Swamp. Stapleton and offensive coordinator/offensive line coach [autotag]Rob Sale[/autotag] are his main contacts at UF and they’ve kept in touch with him over the past few months.

“Off the field, they are great dudes and I have been talking to them a lot over time,” Okunlola said of Sale and Stapleton. “They are just great dudes in general. They say I am a major priority for them and a top recruit for them. They said they love my skills. Playing early has always been a great goal of mine. I feel like I could have a chance to play as a freshman there.”

Okunlola has used three official visits so far, one to each of the programs named earlier. The Hurricanes are viewed as the leader right now in this race, but a late trip to Gainesville could change that. While nothing is scheduled right now, Okunlola has talked about taking a visit in November or December.

He’s one of the few remaining uncommitted five-star recruits in the class of 2023, so expect Florida to push hard for him down the stretch. 247Sports has Okunlola at No. 18 overall in its composite rankings and at No. 3 among offensive tackles.
