ESPN names six Ohio State players among top 50 college football newcomers

ESPN named six Ohio State players among the 50 best newcomers in college football. Who are they, and where do they rank?

College football is a sport in which the best players are generally a part of all the fun on Saturdays for just two to three years. It’s certainly not any different at Ohio State, and in a lot of cases, even more extreme. Most superstars show up, show out, then get on out to the NFL for a big payday.

But for every extraordinary athlete that leaves a program, a new superhuman one comes to replace him in places like Columbus, Norman, and Tuscaloosa. That means many of your household names were just in high school and will soon become some of the most followed and watched players in the game in the upcoming season and beyond.

On that note, ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren ran through a list of the top 50 newcomers (subscription required) to college football this fall and a whopping six Ohio State players made the list. So who are they, and where does the “worldwide leader in sports programming” rank the fresh faces to big-time college football?

We dive in.

It’s Official! J.T. Tuimoloau is officially enrolled at Ohio State

It’s Official! J.T. Tuimoloau Is Officially Enrolled! #Buckeyes

One of the highest-rated recruits in Ohio State football history, J.T. Tuimoloau, committed to becoming a Buckeye close to two weeks ago, but today he was officially listed on the team’s roster.

It is extremely rare for a freshman to commit this late in the game, but there is a ton of hype surrounding Tuimoloau and many people expect him to play a role early and often for the Buckeyes.

It is hard to describe the kind of impact Tuimoloau has already had on the program, but it is worth noting that his commitment means that the 2021 Ohio State class is the first in history to sign five top ten players from the same recruiting cycle.

We can’t wait to see Tuimoloa and the rest of the class make its mark on the Ohio State program in a stadium near you soon.

ESPN names three former Ohio State players in top ten of NFL edge rushers

Those in the league say that almost one-third of the best edge rushers in the NFL come from Ohio State. See what they told ESPN.

Ohio State and defensive line coach Larry Johnson have churned out some of the best edge rushers in the game over the last several years. So much so that there are some former Buckeye defensive ends that have caught the attention of ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

He ranked the top ten edge rushers (subscription required) heading into the upcoming season based on surveys of 50 league executives, coaches, scouts and players, and there are three players that used to wear scarlet and gray that came out among the ten best edge rushers in the game today.

Yeah, we’re pretty sure you can guess the three, but how high does he have them? Did any of the three game wreckers make the top two or three? Don’t worry, we’ve got all the details for you.

J.T. Tuimoloau just committed to Ohio State days ago and already helping recruit

Sometimes the best recruiters are some of the unbelievable talent already committed. Tuimoloau is already going to work!

J.T. Tuimoloau committed to the Ohio State football team days ago, and he’s already making waves. One of the reasons he chose the Buckeyes was the family feel, and now he’s trying to bring others into the fold, starting with a five-star defensive lineman from Texas.

Tuimoloau has been reaching out to Omari Abor, who is the No. 5 defensive lineman in the country, according to 247Sports composite. All crystal ball predictions for Abor are for him to land with Oklahoma, but no predictions have a high level of confidence.

The newest member of OSU’s 2021 recruiting class is wasting no time trying to lure in other big-time recruits. As you can see in the tweet below, Tuimoloau is rolling out the red carpet in hopes of helping solidify an all-time defensive unit in Columbus.

We love to see current recruits and players letting those who are considering Ohio State know why they love it so much. Everyone wants to be part of a family and that’s something that players and coaches have worked hard to build at OSU.

And we kind of think it’s a pretty good selling point too.

J.T. Tuimoloau plans to be a multi-sport athlete at Ohio State

Can you imagine Tuimoloau on the basketball court as well?

J.T. Tuimoloau shook up the landscape of college football yesterday when he picked Ohio State as his school of choice. His commitment gives the Buckeyes even more talent to stay in stride with Alabama and Clemson which have won five of the last six national championships.

If you didn’t know, Tuimoloau is a freak athlete. Most know he was a five-star recruit, but were you aware that he is also ranked as the 24th best recruit ever since tracking recruits began in 2000? Not only that, it is said that he could have also been a five-star tight-end prospect if he wanted to play on the offensive side of the ball. Seems like he has more athletic prowess in his pinky finger than most of us have in our entire bodies.

However, football isn’t the only sport the massive defensive end wants to play at the next level, and it looks like Tuimoloau is going to get his shot with the Buckeye basketball team. We had heard that Oregon and Washington had both officially offered Tuimoloau to play basketball, in what some thought were acts of desperation. But it looks like he’ll have the chance to play hoops for the Buckeyes as well.

When Tuimoloau and his family took their official visit to Columbus on June 18, they also met with Chris Holtmann and the basketball staff. Obviously, football will be the priority for Tuimoloau, but Ryan Day and Holtmann will work out the details to transition from the gridiron to the hardwood.

With football being a full-time job and the Buckeyes hoping to still be playing into January, it will be interesting to see how long basketball is a viable option. But hey… if this kid is as talented as people say he is, Coach Holtmann will be happy to have another big body on the court.

Top twenty rated Ohio State football defensive recruits of all time

Ohio State football just landed its highest-rated defensive commitment ever in J.T. Tuimoloau. Here are the top 20 overall OSU has nabbed.

In case you haven’t heard, the Ohio State football program technically landed its highest-rated defensive prospect in the history of keeping track of these sorts of things. That’s right, defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau picked the Buckeyes over Oregon, USC, and Washington on Sunday — and all of Buckeye Nation rejoiced.

It got us thinking though. Who are the other highly rated defensive prospects that he passed over on the way to becoming the best? So, we decided to check and share it all with you based on the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The tools haven’t been around that long, and that means we’re not going all the way back to the 70s and 80s — not even the 90s in fact.

Still, you’ll see that there are some pretty big names on the list, and the fact that Tamilauio is ranked ahead of them all should have everyone pretty excited.

So, here it is. The top twenty defensive commitments in the history of tracking and ranking prospects in Ohio State’s recruiting efforts. We count down from twenty to No. 1 Tuimoloau.

Nation’s top-rated 5-star defensive lineman, J.T. Tuimoloau, chooses Ohio State over Oregon Ducks

Oregon was unable to land their second 5-star recruit on the day, with J.T. Tuimoloau choosing to commit to Ohio State instead of the Ducks.

Some dreams are just too good to be true, apparently.

While the Oregon Ducks had a great chance to land J.T. Tuimoloau, the nation’s top-rated defensive lineman and the No. 1 overall prospect, according to 247 Sports, it just wasn’t in the stars, in the end.

Instead of coming to Eugene, Tuimoloau chose to commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon.

As one of the biggest gets of the 2021 class, Tuimoloau would have fit perfectly into Oregon’s depth chart set to kick off the season against Fresno State in September. Instead, he will be lining up opposite the Ducks on September 11th, when Oregon visits Columbus.

BOOM! J.T. Tuimoloau picks Ohio State

J.T. Tuimoloau will finally be announcing his college choice on Sunday. Will Ohio State land the highest-rated defensive commitment it’s ever had?

That BOOM you hear isn’t the sound of fireworks in celebration of Independence Day, but Ohio State landing the highest-rated defensive player in its illustrious history (or at least since people started tracking things of this nature). Buckeye Nation is rejoicing as J.T. Tuimoloau has picked Columbus to call home for the next three to four years.

The announcement came just moments ago as Tuimoloau was joined by his family live on CBSSportsHQ. One of the top-ranked defensive ends in the recruiting class of 2021 will join his new teammates on campus in the coming days.

In what has been a long recruitment, the experts had crystal balled Tuimoloau to Ohio State all along. However, the confidence level was never very high. Alabama seemed like they might sneak in and lure the young man to Tuskaloosa but after a canceled trip, the Tide was out of the race. Then Oregon seemed to be the dark horse favorite as the Ducks got the last chance to impress Tuimoloau and his family but to no avail.

Ultimately, the draw of playing for the scarlet and gray and being taught by the best in the business at developing NFL defensive line talent, Larry Johnson, was too much.

I’m sure Ryan Day and Johnson can’t wait to get Tuimoloau on campus to prepare him for the upcoming season. And I think I speak for all Buckeye fans when I say, we’re excited to see how this young man complements an already talented group on the defensive line.
