Broncos made 2 roster moves on Monday

The Broncos signed receiver/returner J.J. Koski and cut inside linebacker Ray Wilborn on Monday.

The Denver Broncos made a pair of roster moves on Monday.

First, the team signed wide receiver J.J. Koski to a one-year contract. Koski (6-1, 195 pounds) worked out for Denver last week.

After playing college football at Cal Poly, Koski signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2020. After spending his rookie season on the practice squad, Koski appeared in five games in 2021.

In his five regular-season appearances, Koski returned two punts for 20 yards and five kickoffs for 89 yards. He played exclusively on special teams (47 snaps) during his time with the Rams.

Koski was cut by L.A. in March and he now lands in Denver, presumably to provide depth at returner. Marvin Mims is expected to serve as the team’s primary returner this season, but the rookie did not play in the team’s preseason opener. Mims dealt with a hamstring injury earlier in camp.

The second move the Broncos made was waiving inside linebacker Ray Wilborn to make room for Koski. The team’s 90-man offseason roster is now full.

Broncos worked out two players on Wednesday

The Broncos worked out wide receivers Ra’Shaun Henry and J.J. Koski on Wednesday.

The Denver Broncos brought in a pair of wide receivers for workouts on Wednesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

The Broncos hosted Ra’Shaun Henry and J.J. Koski this week ahead of Friday’s preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals.

Henry (6-3, 190 pounds) began his college career at Saint Francis University before later transferring to the University of Virginia. After totaling 41 receptions for 809 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons (21 games) with the Cavaliers, Henry went undrafted in 2022.

Henry initially signed with the Carolina Panthers as a college free agent and he has since spent time with the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. He remains a free agent after Wednesday’s workout in Denver.

Koski (6-1, 195 pounds) played college football at Cal Poly and entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. He spent the last three years in L.A., mostly on the practice squad or injured reserve.

Koski appeared in five games during the 2021 season and returned two punts and five kickoffs. In the regular season, he has played exclusively on special teams (47 snaps) in his NFL career so far. At the time of publication, Koski remains a free agent.

10 players on the Rams’ roster bubble entering training camp

The Rams will need to trim their roster down to 53 players before Week 1 of the 2022 season, putting these 10 players on the roster bubble.

It’s almost the time of the year when training camps commence around the NFL, with plenty of players trying to compete for roster spots on their respective teams. Players will be arriving at training camp for the Los Angeles Rams on July 23 as all eyes will be on certain position battles ahead of the upcoming season.

Unfortunately, not every player on the current roster is going to make the active roster for the Rams this year. Before the 2022 season kicks off, Los Angeles will have to trim their roster to 53 players, meaning that there will be quite a few difficult decisions to make.

Some players are going to have a tougher time than others to earn a roster spot and they’ll need strong showings during training camp to prove their worth. With playing in the NFL being a brutal line of work, here are 10 players that are on the roster bubble for the Rams entering training camp.

Rams waive J.J. Koski, make 3 other roster moves

The Rams made four roster moves on Tuesday as they continue to shuffle their practice squad and active roster ahead of the playoffs

The playoffs are rapidly approaching and the Rams continue to tinker with their roster as the season comes to a close. On Tuesday, the team made four roster moves, shuffling the practice squad and 53-man roster a bit.

The Rams waived J.J. Koski from the active roster and also cut kicker Ryan Santoso and long snapper Carson Tinker from the practice squad. To fill one of those spots, the Rams brought back wide receiver Warren Jackson, signing him to the practice squad.

The Rams are about as healthy as they’ve been in the last month with zero players left on the reserve/COVID-19 list, so their depth is growing at the most critical time with just one week left in the regular season.

How Odell Beckham Jr. signing impacts Rams’ depth chart at WR

The signing of Odell Beckham Jr. is definitely going to alter the depth chart at wide receiver for the Rams.

Leave it to the Los Angeles Rams to come out of seemingly nowhere to sign Odell Beckham Jr. following his release from the Cleveland Browns. Beckham’s stint with the Browns didn’t pan out, leading him to mull over his options, with the idea of joining a contender in the latter part of the season.

From the outside looking in, Beckham doesn’t address a massive need for the Rams. Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Van Jefferson were already one of the best trios at wide receiver in the NFL.

However, whenever you can add a player as talented as Beckham, sometimes it’s too good to pass up, even if he’s been less productive in recent years. So with Beckham arriving in Los Angeles, how will the depth chart of the Rams look moving forward?

For starters, Jefferson will likely be relegated to No. 4 on the depth chart once Beckham is ready to make his debut. It remains to be seen if Beckham can suit up for Los Angeles on Monday night versus the San Francisco 49ers.

It will be interesting to see how Beckham meshes with Matthew Stafford at quarterback for the rest of the season. As the Rams prepare for a strong push in the second half of the season, the addition of Beckham unquestionably alters the roles in the offense for certain guys, mainly Jefferson.

Maybe the Rams elect to run more empty sets with four wide receivers on the field to ensure Jefferson is still getting reps. On the other hand, Jefferson will now join Ben Skowronek and J.J. Koski as young wideouts on the back half of the depth chart.

Rams add WR Brandon Powell and RB Mekhi Sargent to practice squad

The Los Angeles Rams added WR Brandon Powell and RB Mekhi Sargent to their practice squad amid recent moves on offense.

The Los Angeles Rams have made some roster moves recently, including the release of DeSean Jackson and the placing of Tutu Atwell on season-ending injured reserve. To give them more depth at wide receiver — and someone that can play special teams — the Rams already signed J.J. Koski from their practice squad to their active roster.

On top of that, the Rams also activated Buddy Howell from their practice squad with all of the injuries they’ve endured at the running back position. Los Angeles has made some corresponding moves due to Koski and Howell getting promoted, signing Brandon Powell and Mekhi Sargent to their practice squad.

Powell previously spent time with the Detroit Lions and the Atlanta Falcons, totaling 23 receptions, 198 yards, and two touchdowns as a wide receiver. He also had a short stint with the Buffalo Bills in the offseason before being released in training camp.

Besides his receiving numbers, Powell served as a punt/kick returner for the Falcons in 2020, accumulating 152 yards on 17 punt returns and 343 yards on 17 kick returns. Given his ability to return kicks, Powell might be a backup plan for the Rams if Koski doesn’t pan out on special teams moving forward.

Sargent is an undrafted running back out of Iowa that has spent most of this season on the practice squad of the Tennessee Titans. He’s carried the ball twice for a mere four yards in his extremely limited action with the Titans this season.

4 wide receivers the Rams should consider signing to add depth

The Rams are thin at wide receiver and they could some depth at the position for the rest of the season. Here are four options.

Fans of the Los Angeles Rams are still raving about the acquisition of Von Miller from the Denver Broncos ahead of the trade deadline. Miller joins a defense that already features the likes of Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, and Leonard Floyd — among others.

With Miller arriving in Los Angeles, the Rams now have a deep group of edge rushers to deploy. On the other side of the ball, Los Angeles is now thin at wide receiver due to the release of DeSean Jackson and Tutu Atwell being placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Van Jefferson make up one of the best trios in the NFL, but behind them, rookie Ben Skowronek is the only other wide receiver on the active roster. Taking that into consideration, I’d expect the Rams to add some depth at the wide receiver position soon.

The trade deadline has passed, so Los Angeles would need to either sign someone from its practice squad or could elect to search free agency for a depth piece. With an obvious need out wide, here are four receivers the Rams should consider signing to give them depth for the rest of the season.
