Four Texas A&M players enter the transfer portal

Four Aggies have already hit the transfer portal.

Texas A&M finished out a disappointing 5-7 campaign with a win over No. 5 LSU on Saturday. While the Aggies ended 2022 on a bit of a high note, the transfer portal is already becoming a factor in College Station.

Four Texas A&M players entered the transfer portal over the course of the last week. Defensive end Donell Harris, linebacker Ish Harris, defensive end Elijah Jeudy and running back LJ Johnson.

All four players were highly sought-after high school prospects who could not put it together at A&M.

Many of the players on Texas and Texas A&M’s roster were recruited by both schools. It will be interesting to see if Steve Sarkisian and his staff have any intent to pursue the former Aggies.

No doubt the transfer portal is going to run its course with every team in the nation this offseason. We have officially reached college football free agency.

Aggie linebacker Ish Harris has entered the transfer portal

Aggie linebacker Ish Harris has entered the transfer portal

Well, we knew that this day was coming, and even after Texas A&M upset the then-5th-ranked LSU Tigers on Saturday night, multiple members of the Aggies roster have entered the transfer portal, with the most recent addition being linebacker Ish Harris, the first member of the heralded 2022 recruiting class.

It all started just an hour after the conclusion of Texas A&M’s win over the Tigers when redshirt freshman defensive end Elijah Jeudy entered his name into the portal after appearing in only two games in his first two seasons with the program. The next day, former 4-Star linebacker Ish Harris, who did not record a statistic this season, followed suit into the portal.

From what we can see, Ish Harris is making the best decision for his football future, and we hope he can find a new home and make an impact on any program that is lucky to have him. Good luck, young man.

Texas A&M Player Profile: Linebacker, Ish Harris

Texas A&M Player Profile: Linebacker, Ish Harris

Going into the 2022 football season, Aggies Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas A&M roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Jimbo Fisher this season.

Ish Harris was one of the earlier commitments in the 2022 class for the Aggies, and a favorite of the coaching staff due to his versatility in playing both running back and linebacker, as well as playing basketball and running track throughout his high school career. Harris spent his early playing years at Pilot Point High School in Pilot Point, Texas, breaking out on both offense and defense during his junior season, tallying 1,788 offensive yards and 18 touchdowns, earning his district offensive MVP award, while recording 44 total tackles and 7 interceptions on defense. During his 2021 senior season, he accounted for 857 rushing yards on 140 touches and 14 touchdowns, while hauling in 19 receptions for 211 yards and 2 touchdowns,  and on defense, he racked up 57 total tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery.

Depth Chart Overview

Ish Harris (Freshman) is going into his freshman season with the Texas A&M football program as a rotational linebacker in A&M’s 4-2-5 defensive scheme led by the first-year defensive coordinator for the Aggies, D.J. Durkin. Harris’ high school tape is just plain fun to watch, cutting and gliding through defenses as a running back while showing instincts, speed, and playmaking ability while playing as a hybrid defender in coverage for the majority of his high school career. It might take time to fully develop Harris at the Mike linebacker position and turn him into a downhill defender, but because of his 6-2, 200lb frame that is similar to a majority of the linebackers on the Texas A&M roster, Harris’s athleticism and experience on offense will aid him when diagnosing plays, and understanding the running backs’ mindset in run defense. Ish Harris enters the 2022 season with a chance to compete for snaps in the linebacker rotation, and contribute on special teams.

Texas Football Recruiting: Four-star RB/OLB Ish Harris releases top five schools

Texas has still been looking for another RB to add to the 2022 class. Ish Harris could be an option after putting UT in his top five.

Texas has locked down one of the best running backs in the 2022 class with four-star Jaydon Blue. Stan Drayton has continued to look for another back to add to the class, with another in-state option closing in on his decision on Saturday.

Ish Harris is a prospect without a set position, playing both running back and across the defense. 247Sports has classified him as an outside linebacker after his junior season. Cornerback could be an option as well. He finished with 44 tackles and five interceptions on top of 1,788 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.

Harris released a top five consisting of Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M. The Wolverines offered the two-way player 19 minutes before Harris released his top five, barely making the cut.

The Longhorns remain in the hunt for some of the top running backs in the country. Harris could present himself as a prospect who commits as a running back but eventually moves over to play with Pete Kwiatkowski. Versatility is always a plus and the Pilot Point native offers exactly that.
