Giants’ Andrew Thomas: Isaiah Wilson ‘has his head on straight’

New York Giants LT Andrew Thomas thinks his college teammate, Isaiah Wilson, is adjusting well and now “has his head on straight.”

The New York Giants have been trying to find the right formula along the offensive line for years now. Free agents and subpar draft picks have been occupying major roles along the line, which has been one of the league’s worst performing the last few seasons.

Injuries have added to the frustration and the team has scrambled to find replacements to the point where they had to trade for and sign players that most teams were unwilling to touch.

Such is the case with Isaiah Wilson, a former first-round selection of the Tennessee Titans who washed out as a rookie last year and then did the same this past summer after bring traded to the Miami Dolphins.

The Giants stepped forward and signed the 6-foot-7, 330-pound Wilson to their practice squad on September 30, where he has been developing into a possible roster candidate.

The Giants signed Wilson based on his relationship with their 2020 first-round pick, tackle Andrew Thomas, a college teammate of Wilson’s at Georgia. Thomas believes Wilson is headed in the right direction after his rough batik to NFL life.

“I think Isaiah definitely has his head on straight,” Thomas told the New York Daily News. “He’s trying to learn. He’s trying to get the playbook. We’ve sat down and had a couple talks because a lot of our scheme at Georgia was pretty similar. So just translating the terms was the biggest thing for him, and he’s learning pretty well.”

The Giants are also looking to convert Wilson, a tackle at Georgia, to guard, which makes him a developmental project at the moment.

“Moving him inside, playing a little bit more guard, he played tackle in college, so we’ll see how he does with that,” Thomas said.

Head coach Joe Judge believes Wilson could reach his potential with the Giants at some point.

“I think we have long-term plans for this guy in terms of where we see this guy being able to help in the future,” Judge said recently of the 22 year-old Wilson. “However, in terms of this year, he’s made a lot of progress and if the situation arises and the opportunity comes up, we’re getting him ready to go ahead and help us.”

Ex-Titans OL Isaiah Wilson ‘definitely has his head on straight’ with Giants

The Giants are trying to get the former Titans OL acclimated to playing guard.

After a nightmare stint with the Tennessee Titans during his rookie season in 2020, and after flaming out with the Miami Dolphins following a trade from Nashville, it appears former first-round pick Isaiah Wilson is doing better with his new team, the New York Giants.

Wilson, who asked for another chance in a social media post back in September, signed with the Giants’ practice squad days after that.

It appeared things were off to a rocky start in New York, though, as Wilson was reportedly out of shape, making it difficult for the Giants to evaluate him.

However, according to Giants 2020 first-round pick and offensive lineman, Andrew Thomas, his former Georgia teammate, Wilson, “definitely has his head on straight” since joining the team.

“I think Isaiah definitely has his head on straight,” Thomas said, per Pat Leonard of the Daily News. “He’s trying to learn. He’s trying to get the playbook. We’ve sat down and had a couple talks because a lot of our scheme at Georgia was pretty similar. So just translating the terms was the biggest thing for him, and he’s learning pretty well.”

Thomas also revealed that the Giants are trying to get Wilson acclimated to playing guard after he was billed as a right tackle coming out of college.

“Moving him inside, playing a little bit more guard, he played tackle in college, so we’ll see how he does with that,” Thomas said.

Giants head coach Joe Judge has also been encouraged with what he’s seen from the Georgia product, saying Wilson has “made a lot of progress.”

“I think we have long term plans for this guy in terms of where we see this guy being able to help in the future,” Judge said. “However, in terms of this year, he’s made a lot of progress and if the situation arises and the opportunity comes up, we’re getting him ready to go ahead and help us.”

After a frustrating end to his short Titans tenure, fans will no doubt be interested to see how things play out for Wilson in The Big Apple.

Giants view Isaiah Wilson as ‘long-term’ development project

New York Giants coach Joe Judge won’t rule out playing Isaiah Wilson this season, but says he’s more of a long-term developmental project.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx61yex5whq8aq player_id=none image=https://giantswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The New York Giants signed offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson to their practice squad back in September and since then, he’s vanished.

Wilson has not been protected, elevated or made available to the media. He sat out a few days due to an illness and has otherwise only been viewed through binoculars during practices.

That is until this past week when reporters finally got an up close and personal look at the former first-round pick — albeit just briefly.

By the looks of things, Wilson has lost a significant amount of weight. He’s also done a good job staying out of the public eye since joining the Giants, and appears to be focused on simply improving himself.

Does that mean Wilson will eventually play this season? It’s unlikely as head coach Joe Judge views him as a “long-term” investment, but he wouldn’t rule it out entirely.

“I think we have long-term plans for this guy in terms of where we see this guy being able to help in the future. However, in terms of this year, he’s made a lot of progress and if the situation arises and the opportunity comes up, we’re getting him ready to go ahead and help us,” Judge said of Wilson this week.

During the bye week, Wilson was afforded a unique opportunity in practice. For the first time since joining the Giants, he was able to go up against the starting defensive linemen.

“For a guy specifically, Isaiah, he’s been making progress for us. He had some really good work yesterday in the one on ones against the defensive line and the defensive rush,” Judge said.

“He gets extra work at some of the schematics and just you can take it back to really like a base level with a lot of these guys because you get them at different points of the year, it’s good to almost go back and reset and start by going over like it’s OTAs or training camp with a lot of these younger guys and make sure they get every detail of the install on the way up. When guys come in, you get them the information, you get them the install, but it’s good as a group to all hear it again together for the first – well, not for the first time, but like it’s the first time.”

What becomes of Wilson in New York is far from certain but at least early on, the union seems to be a positive one for both he and the Giants.

Ex-Titans OL Isaiah Wilson having familiar issue with Giants

New York Giants OL Isaiah Wilson’s “second chance” appears to be off to a rough start.

One of the many issues former Tennessee Titans 2020 first-round pick and offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson had while in Nashville was his not being in shape — and it’s an issue he’s currently having with the New York Giants.

Despite proclaiming himself a changed man in an Instagram post days before signing to the Giants’ practice squad, Wilson is still not in shape, which is a bad start for the second chance he asked for.

According to The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, Giants offensive line coach Rob Sale said that the team can’t evaluate Wilson properly until he gets in shape, an ominous sign for what is his third different stint in the NFL.

After having a disastrous rookie campaign with the Titans that saw many issues, both on and off the field, Wilson was traded to the Miami Dolphins in March, but his stay in South Beach lasted just days before he was cut.

We don’t want to cast a final judgement in this particular situation, but clearly it isn’t looking good for Wilson in New York, either.

However, at least the Giants aren’t depending on Wilson to be a long-term solution by any means, which, unfortunately for the Titans, was the case.

Former Georgia Bulldog gets new NFL opportunity

Former standout Georgia Bulldog offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson is getting another NFL opportunity with the New York Giants.

Former standout Georgia Bulldog offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson is getting another NFL opportunity with the New York Giants. Wilson, a former first-round pick, is entering his second season in the NFL.

Isaiah Wilson began his career with the Tennessee Titans, but off-the-field issues caused the Titans to trade Wilson to the Miami Dolphins. Later, Miami released Wilson.

Now, Wilson will look to lean on former Georgia Bulldog teammates in New York. Wilson should have a significant support system with the Giants, who have four of Wilson’s former UGA teammates: Lorenzo Carter, Azeez Ojulari, Andrew Thomas, and Tae Crowder.

Isaiah Wilson still has a lot of talent. He was the No. 29 selection of the 2020 NFL draft, but Wilson must balance his life better like he did at Georgia.

The Giants signed Isaiah Wilson to their practice squad on Sept. 29. The NFL is allowing larger practice squads in 2021 and New York has issues along their offensive line, so it makes sense to bring in Wilson.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news:

Giants sign OT Isaiah Wilson to practice squad

The New York Giants have officially signed offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson to their practice squad.

The New York Giants announced on Thursday that offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson has been officially signed to their practice squad. This comes less than two days after his tryout in East Rutherford.

The 22-year-old Wilson was a first-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in the 2020 NFL draft. He was a college teammate of left tackle Andrew Thomas at Georgia.

Here’s more of what we wrote on Wilson previously:

The 6-foot-6, 350-pound Wilson had an extensive battle with COVID-19 last season, spending time on and off of the Reserve/COVID-19 list between July and October. Then, in December, he was suspended one game for violating team rules.

After returning from his suspension, Wilson was promptly placed on the reserve/non-football illness list.

Additionally, Wilson was arrested for DUI in September of 2020 and again following a high-speed chase in Georgia this past January. Following that arrested, he sent and a deleted a tweet saying he’d never again play for the Titans.

He was correct and the Titans traded Wilson to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft. However, Miami released him after just three days citing that Wilson showed up late for his team physical and missed two workouts.

Earlier this week, Wilson posted a heartfelt message on his Instagram account as he sought a second chance.

Dear World,

Some of you may know me as GG, some of you may know me as Panda, even some of you know me as the biggest bust in NFL history. Today I write to you as Isaiah Wilson. Before the fame and the glamour, I was just a kid trying to make history as the best player out of New York City. I was the hope for my hood. As time went on and success came my way I struggled deeply with trying to prove who I was to every one counting on my wins. I lost myself. I lost my mental. I lost my ability to love. I lost it all. When I lost , seemingly everyone who once was in my corner, was gone. The ones that have remained, I love you. Today I write to you as Isaiah Wilson, not asking for forgiveness, but hoping for a second chance. With the time I’ve had away from the game I learned so much about who I am as a human. I finally love myself and it feels incredible. I now am ready to step back on that field with pride , integrity, and passion. Thank you to everyone who hasn’t left my side, I’ll never forget you and to the ones who ran away, I forgive you. I’m back and better than ever. Let’s go!

Giants head coach Joe Judge is, of course, a fan a second chances.

More to come…

Giants worked out former Titans first-round pick Isaiah Wilson

This is the second workout Isaiah Wilson has had in less than a week.

According to the league’s transactions wire, the New York Giants have worked out former Tennessee Titans 2020 first-round pick and offensive tackle, Isaiah Wilson.

This is the second workout for the Georgia product since being released by the Miami Dolphins back in March. Wilson previously worked out for the Indianapolis Colts prior to their Week 3 loss to the Titans.

Wilson’s brief NFL career has been a tumultuous one.

Following several issues on and off the field during a rookie campaign in which he played just four snaps, Wilson was traded by the Titans to the Dolphins in a deal that saw the two teams also exchange draft picks.

But Wilson’s time in Miami didn’t last more than a few days. The 22-year-old was cut after he was reportedly late for his physical, late for team orientation and didn’t show up for a pair of optional workouts that he had previously said he would attend.

However, it appears that Wilson is trying to get his life and career back on track. On top of the two workouts, Wilson posted to Instagram asking for a second chance in the NFL.

Dear World,

Some of you may know me as GG, some of you may know me as Panda, even some of you know me as the biggest bust in NFL history. Today I write to you as Isaiah Wilson. It’ll be interesting to see if the Giants — or any team, for that matter — decides to sign Wilson and give him the second chance he’s looking for.

Ex-Titans OT Isaiah Wilson asks for second chance in Instagram post

“I’m back and better than ever. Let’s go,” Isaiah Wilson wrote on Instagram.

Days after getting a workout with the Indianapolis Colts, former Tennessee Titans 2020 first-round pick and offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson posted to Instagram asking for a second chance in the NFL.

Wilson’s post reads:

Wilson was selected with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft by the Titans, but his first and only season in the NFL was an unmitigated disaster.

Wilson ran into several issues, both on and off the field, and played just four snaps. Tennessee parted ways with the troubled Georgia product earlier this year by trading him to the Miami Dolphins in a deal that also saw the two teams swap seventh-round picks.

The 22-year-old’s time in Miami was brief, as the Dolphins cut him days after the trade was made official after he was reportedly late for his physical, late for team orientation and didn’t show up for a pair of optional workouts that he had previously said he would attend.

In terms of the human element involved here, we’re happy to see Wilson is in a better place right now and seemingly back on track after displaying nothing but destructive behavior since entering the NFL.

As we already saw in his workout with the Colts, Wilson will likely get his opportunity to show he deserves a second (or third) chance someplace, but it won’t come in Tennessee or Miami.

Colts work out former first-round pick OT Isaiah Wilson

The Colts worked out former first-round pick OT Isaiah Wilson on Friday.

The Indianapolis Colts worked out four players on Friday, including former first-round pick offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson.

Wilson was drafted as the No. 29 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft to the Tennessee Titans out of Georgia. Between missing games on the reserve/COVID-19 list and a suspension for violating team rules, Wilson appeared in just one game during his rookie season.

Wilson also had a troubling offseason when he was involved in a high-speed car chase with the police in January. He was charged with “felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving, reckless conduct, possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana, and possession and use of drug-related objects,” per Turron Davenport of ESPN.

Wilson was traded to the Miami Dolphins for a seventh-round pick but was quickly released when the team felt he wasn’t open to their offers of help.

Wilson had other run-ins with the law including a trespass warning while attending a Tennessee State off-campus party. He was arrested and charged with a DUI in September 2020.

The other three players the Colts worked out on Friday include tight end Ryan Izzo, wide receiver Duke Williams and guard Adam Coon.

Former Titans OT Isaiah Wilson working out for Colts

This is Isaiah Wilson’s first workout since being cut by the Miami Dolphins earlier this year.

The Indianapolis Colts are hosting former Tennessee Titans first-round pick and offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson for a workout, per the league’s transactions wire.

Wilson, who was drafted by the Titans with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, ran into several off-the-field issues during his rookie campaign and ended up playing just four snaps that year.

In 2021, Wilson was traded by Tennessee to the Miami Dolphins in a deal that also saw the Titans send a 2022 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2021 seventh-round pick; however, Wilson didn’t last long in South Beach.

He was cut by the Dolphins just days after the trade became official after he was late for his physical, late for team orientation and didn’t show up for a pair of optional workouts that he had previously said he would attend.

This is the first workout Wilson has had since flaming out in Miami. It’ll be interesting to see if he can stick in Indianapolis in any capacity.
