Isaiah Mobley will try to find a new home for 2024-25 NBA season

Isaiah Mobley and the Cavs part ways.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have decided not to extend a qualifying offer to power forward and former USC Trojan Isaiah Mobley, making him an unrestricted free agent, per reports picked up by Hoops Wire

Mobley, 24, is 6-foot-8 and was selected by the Cavs with the No. 49 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft out of USC. He has appeared in a total of 22 NBA games over his two seasons, averaging 2.5 points and 1.4 rebounds.

The older brother of Cavaliers starting big man Evan Mobley signed a two-way contract each of the previous two summers but was not retained this past summer by the Cavs.

“I know my time is coming,” Mobley said at the end of last season, via Jackson Flickinger of SB Nation. “I just try to keep getting better and be ready for my opportunities when they come. But yeah, I want it to be now or tomorrow. But you know, that’s out of my control. I don’t let it really bother me.”

Let’s see what teams will be interested in the power forward before writing him off for the future.

Mobley averaged a team-high 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds for the 2021-22 Trojans, as well as leading the team with 29 blocks and finishing second in assists with 106 and steals with 24. Mobley, the 2021-22 USC team MVP, was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference first team and was named honorable mention on the Pac-12 All-Defensive team.

Twitter reaction to Isaiah Mobley summer league MVP award and Cavs championship

Isaiah Mobley was the big star of the past week in the NBA. We will see if he can stick on the Cavs’ NBA roster.

Former USC Trojans star Isaiah Mobley is making headlines this summer with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs finished off an undefeated 6-0 run at the Las Vegas NBA Summer League, and Mobley was a huge reason why.

The Cavs defeated the Houston Rockets on Monday night to take home the summer league title. Mobley was named the MVP after scoring 28 points with 11 rebounds in the final game.

The Cavs, in 2021, drafted Evan Mobley, who has become a defensive star in just a short time in the NBA. Now his brother, Isaiah, has exploded in a burst of brilliance and likely put himself on the map in hopes of sticking with an NBA roster. In his first pro season, he was mostly a G League player and wasn’t able to stay with the Cavs for very long. Earning more minutes in his second pro season is a key goal, but the first goal is simply staying with the big club instead of toiling in the G League for a majority of the fall and winter.

The reactions came pouring in on social media following Mobley’s huge night for Isaiah Mobley:

Isaiah Mobley leads Cavs to NBA Summer League title and wins MVP award

Isaiah Mobley didn’t merely have a great game in the summer league; he had a great week. It’s a notable building block for him.

Former USC Trojans star Isaiah Mobley is already fitting in with the Cleveland Cavaliers. With his second pro season coming up, he delivered a marvelous performance at the Las Vegas NBA Summer League.

The Cavs finished 6-0 and defeated the Houston Rockets to win the title on Monday night. Mobley was the star of the week. In the final game of the summer league for 2023, Mobley exploded with 28 points and 11 rebounds, becoming the first Cavs player to score 25 points with 10 rebounds in the summer league since Ante Zizic in 2018.

Mobley won the summer league title on Monday. One day earlier, on Sunday, hit the game-winner against the Brooklyn Nets in the semifinals, so things have gone well for him in Las Vegas since the summer league began.

Sam Merrill (27 points) and rookie Emoni Bates (19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) also played well in the finale, but Isaiah Mobley’s performance throughout the week is a sign that he needs more minutes this upcoming season.

After a stellar career with the Trojans, both Evan Mobley and Isaiah Mobley are looking like talented NBA players for the Cavs. Isaiah certainly increased the odds that he will be able to spend this next season playing more games alongside his brother.

Isaiah Mobley leads Cavs to NBA summer league championship round

Isaiah Mobley has been a star for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA summer league.

The NBA career of Isaiah Mobley is trying to take off. This July at the NBA summer league, Mobley gained more altitude.

Mobley scored 23 points with seven rebounds and five assists to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers’ summer league team over the Brooklyn Nets’ summer squad in a semifinal game. Mobley hit the game-winning basket to carry the Cavs to the championship round versus the Utah Jazz or the Houston Rockets.

The stakes are high enough for Mobley as it is. He is trying to stick on an NBA roster and create a steady career for himself at the highest level of professional basketball. Isaiah Mobley played 52 minutes in the last two games of the 2023 NBA regular season, when the Cavs were resting their starters for the playoffs. Other than those 52 minutes, Mobley barely played in the NBA last year, appearing as a garbage-time mop-up man who played just a handful of minutes per appearance. He spent most of his first year of pro ball in the G League. The obvious goal is to spend all of a season in the NBA and not have to go back to a developmental league.

All of that aside, if Isaiah can indeed stick with the Cavs’ NBA roster, his prize is that he would get to play on the same team with his brother, Evan Mobley. Sticking on an NBA roster is a reward in its own right, but doing so with Evan would be even more special.

This summer league performance has moved the needle in the right direction for this USC Trojan.

Mobley dropped a career-high in the G League and nearly had a triple-double in the process.

For Evan and Isaiah Mobley, Cavs’ preseason finale brought special meaning

The Cavaliers’ preseason finale on Friday turned out to have a special meaning for Evan and Isaiah Mobley.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Preseason in the NBA is an odd time in sports.

Wins and losses don’t matter. Championship contenders sometimes go winless. Teams experiment with different lineups, often resulting in some odd combinations on the court. All the while, players just want to escape healthy and without injury.

When the Cleveland Cavaliers took the court for their preseason finale on Friday, the matchup against the Orlando Magic seemed much more than a meaningless exhibition game.

It may not have seemed that way from the outside looking in, though.

All-Stars Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen didn’t travel with the team to get more rest ahead of the season opener Wednesday in Toronto.

Several others, including Kevin Love, were also absent.

While much of the starting lineup was winding down the preseason, Rookie of the Year runner-up Evan Mobley was just ramping up. He missed the first three games of the preseason due to a sprained ankle and was finally cleared to play on Friday.

Not wanting to run Mobley too hard, head coach J.B. Bickerstaff gave him just enough playing time to knock off some rust and get some minutes on the court. He responded by scoring eight points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal in 16 minutes.

Mobley looked to pick up where he left off last season.

He got involved early and flourished against the frontline of the Magic, from finishing through contact to drawing fouls. He would get to the free-throw line six times in the first quarter, further proving he is healthy and ready to go.

“I thought he looked comfortable,” Bickerstaff said.

With the team seeing everything it needed to from its franchise cornerstone, the final tune-up game also gave observers a wholesome moment between Mobley and his older brother, Isaiah: Their first NBA game together.

The Cavaliers drafted Isaiah 49th out of USC this year in the NBA draft. He signed a two-way contract with the team after a strong junior year with the Trojans, in which he was named to the All-Pac-12 first team and honorable mention All-Defensive team.

Because Evan made his preseason debut, it was the first opportunity for the two brothers to share the court together in the NBA and Bickerstaff wasted no time getting them in the game. With 4:37 left in the first quarter, Evan and Isaiah checked in.

“It was a little weird hearing our names at the same time,” Evan said.

They played together during the 2020-21 season when Evan was a freshman. Evan was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, while Isaiah had a tremendous run in the NCAA Tournament to help the Trojans reach the Elite Eight.

But, playing in the NBA together is different.

“It was super cool,” Isaiah told Rookie Wire. “Being able to play with my brother on the same team and get some action together, it was super cool. Hopefully, we’ll get some more opportunities to do that.”

Evan and Isaiah each entered their names in the NBA draft last year. Evan stayed in and eventually became the third pick by the Cavaliers. He narrowly lost out on Rookie of the Year to Scottie Barnes while Isaiah returned to school for one more year.

Isaiah worked tirelessly last year on his game, and that resulted in hearing his name called in the second round. He had a good run with the Cavaliers in the Las Vegas Summer League and performed well during his limited time this preseason.

He produced eight points, three rebounds and three assists in a preseason-high 20 minutes of work on Friday in the 114-108 loss to the Magic. He finished by shooting 4-of-6 from the field for his best outing.

Evan can see the improvement Isaiah made.

He definitely improved on his shooting. He was really working on that all summer and the past year that he went back. Also, just improving his body and getting in better shape. I feel like that is what he has really been working on all summer.

Brothers playing on the same team isn’t necessarily a new concept. In fact, the Mobleys were on the court on Friday at the same time as Franz and Moe Wagner. Having Evan on the team with a year under his belt will certainly help Isaiah.

Evan has plenty of advice to offer Isaiah.

“Just come in, be comfortable and be like a sponge and soak it all in,” Evan said. “It is definitely a lot to learn in the first year always. You’re going to make some rookie mistakes but just stay focused and stay solid and it is going to be all good.”

Said Isaiah of Evan:

“He has been great but the whole team (has been great), as well. From Donovan Mitchell all the way down. The guys have been helping me a lot — being in the right spots, what to do, what not to do.”

The upcoming year will likely look drastically different for both players.

The team has high expectations for Evan after a tremendous rookie campaign last year. He helped anchor a defense that ranked fifth in the NBA. On the other side, Isaiah will spend some of the season in the NBA G League and largely be in a developmental role.

In other words, opportunities for the two brothers to share the court may be few and far between. Their parents were on hand to watch them on Friday and the team, as a whole, was excited to share that moment.

“It is, obviously, special to have the opportunity to play (together) in the NBA, it doesn’t happen often,” Bickerstaff said. “As a family, understanding their character and how special their bond is, it makes even that much more fun to be a part of and be present in that moment.”
