Patriots make two late roster moves ahead of 49ers matchup

The Patriots signed one CB and put another on IR on Saturday

The New England Patriots have officially placed cornerback Alex Austin on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Patriots.com confirmed the news ahead of Sunday’s Week 4 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

Austin was elevated on the depth chart after Marco Wilson struggled against the Seattle Seahawks. The team will likely turn back to Wilson, who was inactive last week.

They also signed second-year defensive back Isaiah Bolden to the 53-man roster to help fill the void left by Austin. So Wilson and Bolden will be two of the primary backups for Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones against a 49ers offense with weapons across the board.

The Patriots also had a couple of practice squad elevations with defensive tackle Trysten Hill and tight end Mitchell Wilcox being promoted.

Hill can help provide additional depth along the defensive front, while Wilcox could serve as an extra blocking tight end for the Patriots’ rushing attack.

The Patriots need all of the able-bodied players they can find to fend off a ferocious 49ers defensive front on the road on Sunday.

‘Special teams demon’ DB re-signs to Patriots’ practice squad

Jerod Mayo once called him a “special teams demon”

Cornerback Isaiah Bolden signed to the New England Patriots practice squad. The team confirmed the move on Friday.

Along with re-signing Bolden, the team also announced they had signed former Los Angeles Rams sixth-round draft pick linebacker Ochaun Mathis.

Bolden was released during the initial 53-man roster cuts. Along with Mathis, he now accounts for 15 players currently on the Patriots’ practice squad.

Mathis appeared in eight games on limited snaps last season and finished with two tackles and one quarterback hit.

Meanwhile, Bolden was drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL draft. He suffered a season-ending injury during the Week 2 preseason contest against the Green Bay Packers last season.

The Patriots liked what Bolden brought to the table in terms of versatility, particularly on special teams. Coach Jerod Mayo even went as far as referring to him as a “special teams demon.”

Bolden is a player with tremendous upside and potential. At the very least, he could add depth to the Patriots’ defensive backfield, while also contributing on special teams.

Patriots CB reacts to Colorado WR Travis Hunter’s ironman performance

Travis Hunter blew everyone away with his season-opening performance, including one Patriots cornerback in particular

The entire sports world was blown away by Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter’s ironman performance in Thursday night’s season-opening win over North Dakota State,

Patriots’ second-year cornerback Isaiah Bolden was no different.

He had his eyes glued to the television screen as Hunter hauled in seven receptions for 132 yards and three touchdowns on offense, while also allowing only three catches for 18 total yards on defense, per Pro Football Focus.

Bolden played with Hunter at Jackson State under coach Deion Sanders. The Patriots’ 2023 seventh-round draft pick took to social media to give his former teammate a shoutout for his incredible performance.

“TRAVIS [expletive] HUNTER THIS [expletive] AINT NEW,” Bolden posted on X.

Depending on how the season goes, the Patriots could be in a position to draft Hunter in 2025. They desperately need a receiver, and they could use another corner. It’s hard to envision Hunter playing on both sides of the football as consistently in the NFL as he does in college.

But what he’s doing now is completely unheard of.

The offensive line might be the bigger concern for the Patriots.

Still, it would be hard not to consider drafting an exceptional talent like Hunter, who is a legitimate unicorn in college football.

Patriots cut four more players to make room for waiver wire additions

Four more Patriots players have reportedly been released

Even after the 53-man roster was intact, the New England Patriots reportedly made several moves on Wednesday.

According to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed, via Andrew Callahan, the Patriots released wide receiver Jalen Reagor, cornerback Isaiah Bolden, offensive lineman Michael Jordan and defensive tackle Trysten Hill.

Reagor likely wouldn’t see the field much as a receiver, but his incredible talent as a returner on special teams was believed to be enough to help him stick on the roster. The same goes for Bolden, who stuck around mostly for his special teams abilities.

Hill being released is also a bit of a surprise considering the question marks along the defensive front. The team is still missing starting defensive tackle Christian Barmore, who is still recovering after being diagnosed with blood clots.

The four players awarded to the Patriots in waiver claims were linebacker Curtis Jacobs, offensive tackle Demontrey Jacobs, defensive tackle Eric Johnson and offensive tackle Zachary Thomas.

Just because the 53-man roster is intact doesn’t mean the Patriots are going to stop making moves. The roster tinkering is an ongoing process that stretches throughout the entire season.

Jerod Mayo has high praise for ‘special teams demon’ Isaiah Bolden

Patriots DB Isaiah Bolden has been an early standout to coach Jerod Mayo.

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo had high praise for second-year defensive back Isaiah Bolden, who he referred to as a “special teams demon,” per CLNS’ Taylor Kyles.

Bolden was selected by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL draft. The Jackson State product suffered an unfortunate injury in Week 2 of the preseason against the Green Bay Packers, forcing him to go to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

He was placed on season-ending injured reserve shortly thereafter.

Now, he is looking to start fresh. His speed is one of his best attributes, and it has been noticed by the coaching staff throughout the spring practices.

Bolden has a real chance to carve out a role for himself on the Patriots’ roster. The roster is deep in the defensive backfield, but his ability to be impactful as a special teams player adds immediate value to the team.

Patriots CB Isaiah Bolden’s live reaction to Celtics-Pacers game was incredible

Live reactions don’t get any better than this

The NBA Eastern Conference Finals opened up with a bang on Tuesday night, as the Boston Celtics defeated the Indiana Pacers.

Multiple Patriots players were in attendance and got a good view of Jaylen Brown’s game-tying shot late in the fourth quarter, which ultimately pushed the game into overtime.

The Celtics were victorious by a 133-128 margin.

Everyone from Patriots quarterback Drake Maye to cornerback Isaiah Bolden reacted to the game. However, Bolden’s reaction of Brown’s clutch 3-point shot might have been the best. To say he was excited would be a huge understatement.

It’s always awesome to see fellow Boston sports team supporting each other. There could be more sightings of Patriots players soon, in what promises to be an exciting series.

Patriots CB Isaiah Bolden officially in concussion protocol

Bill Belichick gives an update on the health status of rookie CB Isaiah Bolden.

The New England Patriots were back on the practice field on Tuesday, and coach Bill Belichick was once again fielding questions from the media. Of course, one of the first topics dealt with the health status of injured rookie cornerback Isaiah Bolden.

During last Saturday’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, Bolden suffered an ugly head injury after colliding into a teammate. After lying motionless on the ground for several minutes, he was taken off the field on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital.

Bolden was allowed to fly back home with the team the following day, and according to Belichick, he appears to be in good spirits. However, he is currently in concussion protocol.

Bolden was tied for the seventh-most snaps in the preseason game in Green Bay. His absence keeps him on the roster bubble, but even as a seventh-round draft pick, he has shown the ability to contribute as a defensive back and on special teams. Perhaps there’s still hope that he makes the team.

The most important thing right now is getting healthy, and everything else will follow for the multi-talented rookie defensive back.

Patriots choose to cancel joint practices this week with Titans

No joint practices this week for the Patriots.

The New England Patriots announced that they are canceling their joint practices with the Tennessee Titans, following cornerback Isaiah Bolden’s injury on Saturday night.

The injury occurred with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter, and both teams decided not to resume the game. On Sunday morning, the team released a statement saying that Bolden had been released from the hospital and would be flying home with the team.

New England will practice at home and then fly to Nashville on Thursday. The Patriots and Titans meet on Friday night for the final preseason game of the year.

After Friday’s preseason finale, the Patriots will shift focus towards cutting their roster down to 53 players and preparing for the Sept. 10 regular season-opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Patriots CB Isaiah Bolden makes first comments after injury scare

Isaiah Bolden comments for the first time after Saturday’s injury.

New England Patriots rookie cornerback Isaiah Bolden made his first comments on Sunday morning, following an ugly injury in Saturday’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

When attempting to make a tackle, Bolden collided head-first into a teammate and was motionless on the ground for several minutes, before he was ultimately taken off the field on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital.

After being held overnight at Aurora Bay Medical Center, the 23-year-old defensive back was released from the hospital and allowed to travel back home with his teammates. Not long after that update, he sent out a post on social media.

“Appreciate the prayers more excited to be back with the guys,” Bolden posted.

It was great news to not only get the positive update from the team but also hear from Bolden after the injury scare.

He’s a young man with family, friends and his entire life ahead of him before anything else. There’s a human element in all of it that weighs heavier than the game being played on the field.

Patriots CB Isaiah Bolden gets to go home with his teammates, per recent update from the team.

Bolden was released from the hospital and allowed to travel back home with his teammates.
