  1. West Virginia has held opponents to a 38.5% field-goal mark since losing to Gonzaga 87-82 Dec. 2. The Mountaineers have gone 3-0 since then, and with the shutdown defensive effort, have averaged a 12.3-point margin of victory. Over those three wins, WVU has upped its ball-hawking performance to the tune of 15 forced turnovers per game.
  2. The Cyclones have lost three straight games since opening their season with an 80-63 win Nov. 29. Iowa State has struggled on defense, allowing 78.2 points per game. That ranks 277th out of 328 NCAA-I teams that have played so far, and it’s not a recent phenomenon. A year ago, ISU’s defense (73.0 PPG) ranked 276th out of 353.
  3. WVU swept the season series from Iowa State a year ago (with wins by scores of 76-61 and 77-71). Since 2016, the Mountaineers are 8-3 straight up and 6-4-1 against the spread against the Cyclones.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over has hit in nine of the last 10 meetings in this series. ISU’s defense won’t be able to hold WVU under 80 points. Peg this one as ticking into the 150s and BACK THE OVER 146.5 (-115).

Iowa State (-450) will cost you four and a half times your potential return. That’s just not a good investment on a team with one win in three tries. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

IOWA STATE -8.5 (-110) is the lean here, even though ISU has yet to cover this season. You just cannot trust Kansas State, a team which lost by double digits at home to an NAIA school. Back the home side, although it likely will be a sweat shop until the end. The favorite has cashed in eight of the previous 11 meetings between these conference rivals, too, so that bodes well in favor of the Cyclones.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 137.5 (-110) is the play here between two sides struggling offensively during the early going. The Under is also 4-0 in K-State’s past four following a non-cover, and 4-1 in the previous five after a straight-up victory. For Iowa State, it has hit the Under in five of the past six against teams with an overall winning percentage under .400.

  1. The Mountaineers head to Ames looking to carry over the momentum from last week’s 24-6 win over TCU. It was their season-high third consecutive cover. The Under has also cashed in the past two.
  2. Iowa State is 38th in the country with 437.1 total yards per game with 195.9 rushing yards per outing to rank 37th. The Cyclones are also 38th in the nation with 33.1 points per game. Defensively, the Cyclones are 20th overall with just 110.1 rushing yards per game allowed, and they’re yielding just 23.0 PPG to rank 26th in the country.
  3. The road team is 5-2-1 ATS in the past eight battles in this series, but the favorite is 4-1-1 ATS in the past six meetings. The Under has connected in five of the previous six in this series.

Iowa State (-233) should be able to pick up a victory at Jack Trice Saturday, but West Virginia is certainly no pushover. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

IOWA STATE -6 (-110) pounded West Virginia 38-14 as a nine-point favorite in last season’s meeting. WVU is 0-2-1 ATS in the past three meetings in this series, although the Mountaineers covered the spread in their previous three before Iowa State’s nice run.

The Mountaineers are 5-1 ATS in their past six meetings, but they’re 0-3 straight up on the road while covering just one of those outings. As such, West Virginia cannot be trusted in this one. Play this one lightly, however, as it will be a lower-scoring game.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 48.5 (-106) is the lean, cashing in five of the past six in this series. The Under is 21-6-1 in Iowa State’s past 28 against teams with a winning record, and 26-10-1 in their past 37 as a favorite at Jack Trice Stadium.

  1. Iowa State RB Breece Hall leads the nation in rushing with 1,169 yards. Hall has piled up eight 100-yard games in 2020 – every ISU game this season. He ran for 101 yards on 24 carries when these teams met in Ames, Iowa, last season (Nov. 16, 2019). The Cyclones won that game 23-21 on PK Connor Assalley’s 36-yard field goal as time expired. Iowa State – a 7-point favorite – led Texas 20-7 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Longhorns battled back to take a 21-20 lead on a pair of touchdown tosses by QB Sam Ehlinger before the Cyclones kicked the winning field goal.
  2. The Cyclones and Longhorns control their own destinies in attempting to reach the Dec. 19 Big 12 Championship Game. But ISU will need to flip some historical trends if it wants to get there and win it. Iowa State has beaten Texas just three times in 17 all-time meetings, and the Cyclones only have won once in Austin (2010). ISU hasn’t won a conference title since 1912 and has never played in a conference championship game.
  3. Texas hasn’t played since Nov. 7, when it registered a 17-13 home win over West Virginia. The Longhorns’ Nov. 21 game at Kansas was postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests within the Jayhawks program. Following bye/postponement weeks this season, the ‘Horns are 2-0 straight-up and 0-1-1 ATS.

It’s hard to see Kansas State (+375) pulling off an upset given the uncertainty of who will be available for this game.

There isn’t a high enough return on investment on Iowa State (-500) to warrant a play. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

This is what sports betting in 2020 is all about. I have no idea who on Kansas State is playing, the coach isn’t giving us many clues and there’s even a chance the game is canceled.

If we are going to get money down on either side, I’ll lean to Kansas State. The Wildcats are 11-1 in their last 12 games against the Cyclones and 7-1 ATS in their last eight Big XII games. Kansas State covered in the one game it lost to the Cyclones (2018), which was a ranked Iowa State team.

The peak of Kansas State’s season was going into then-No. 3 ranked Oklahoma and upsetting the Sooners on Sept. 26. If the Wildcats can duplicate any of that form, or if Iowa State comes out sluggish, 12 points is too big of a number to cover. The Cyclones are 1-5 ATS in their last six games as a home favorite.

Again it’s only a lean but I’d have to take KANSAS STATE +11 (-110) if I was forced to take a side.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total has moved from the 50.5 opening number down to its current price. According to Pregame.com, 68% of the money wagered and 78% of the total bets are on the Over yet the total is moving down. Hmm.

Maybe the market has Kansas State information I don’t or it’s the temperature dipping below 40 degrees in the evening or it’s Kansas State starting a true freshman at quarterback QB Will Howard. Either way, something is moving the number.

We could be arriving at the party a little late but I’ll still TAKE UNDER 47.5 (-110) for 1 unit.
