Iowa State this season is 3-9 to the Over in games. Oklahoma is a little better at 6-7, but neither team has the offensive fire power of the top teams in the country. This will be a low-paced game where both teams try to milk the shot clock on each possession. It might not be a fun brand of basketball. But it is effective for the Under in this game.

Iowa State stunned No. 1 North Carolina 70-65 in a Friday semifinal. The Cyclones, 5.5-point underdogs, rallied from a 57-49 deficit in the final 5:43. Iowa State G Caleb Grill sank seven 3-pointers (out of 11 attempts) and finished with a career-high 31 points. The senior only averaged 7.3 points per game (PPG) and was 4-for-24 from the 3-point line in the Cyclones’ first 4 games.

UConn defeated 18th-ranked Alabama 82-67 in the other Friday semifinal — the Huskies were 2-point dogs. Junior F Adama Sanogo led the Huskies with a game-high 25 points. UConn is averaging 85.9 PPG to rank 17th in the nation.

This will be a game of contrasting styles as UConn will want to push the tempo, while Iowa State will want to slow the game down a bit and make shots harder to come by for the Huskies.

UConn has had a great start to the season, opening 7-0 with No. 22 ranking its reward. At 5-0, Iowa State is also undefeated and coming off a monumental win over the No. 1 team in the country.

The Cyclones are a good team with wins over North Carolina and Villanova (81-79 in OT Thursday). After those tough challenges, they should be ready for this matchup with the Huskies.

Being favored by 5.5 points is too much for UConn vs. Iowa State. This will be a close game and will come down to the final possession, so this number is too high. IOWA STATE +5.5 (-110) is my FAVORITE PLAY.

Over/Under

With the expectation of tight battle that will come down to the end, I like OVER 135.5(-110).

TCU, despite already having a berth in the Big 12 title game clinched, comes into this game with far more at stake. A win in this game and a win next week will lock up a playoff berth for a Horned Frogs team that was 28-1 before the season began to win the conference. Coach Sonny Dykes has this team buy into a mission and QB Max Duggan is leading the charge.

Duggan and RB Kendre Miller have continued to pace a team with a fighting instinct to continually come back from deficits to pull out improbable victories. This continued Saturday with a 22-second field goal drill at the end of regulation to pick up a 29-28 victory over Baylor. What looked frantic from afar was all part of a practiced plan for TCU. It made for exciting football for sure.

Iowa State has reached heights it has never known under coach Matt Campbell. While the defense is still good this season (16.5 points allowed per game, 8th nationally), the offense has struggled without last year’s stars, QB Brock Purdy and RB Breece Hall. The duo was drafted into the NFL after the 2021 season.

Averaging 20.7 points per game, the Cyclones will have a challenging time keeping up with TCU who has averaged 39.5 points overall.

TCU (-390) is not worth the juice, despite the fact that it needs this game and will win. Spending almost 4 times your potential profit is not good value on a standalone wager, but this is a solid play to add to a parlay.

Against the spread

BET IOWA STATE +9.5 (-105).

This is just too many points in a game that will not have a lot of scoring involved.

TCU will win, but with the type of defense the Cyclones play, I do not see a large score coming from either side. Iowa State will continue to use the run game and force TCU to have fewer drives and therefore, fewer chances to score.

I do not see this game getting out of hand and I’ll take 9.5 points with the underdog. IOWA STATE +9.5 (-105) is my FAVORITE PLAY.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 47 (-107).

Iowa State can muddy up games with the best of them and are 2-9 to the Under; TCU games are only 6-5 to the Over.

Iowa State will slow this game to a snail’s pace, and it will not allow TCU will Duggan and Miller to run up points. Iowa State plays good run defense while the Horned Frogs want to use Miller to get through this game and onto the Big 12 title game. This will be a quick one. A lot of rushing and not a lot of points are in play in Fort Worth.

I like Kansas State here, and considering it has only had 1 one-point win since 2018, I’ll take the slightly better odds on the spread.

Against the spread

BET KANSAS STATE -1.5 (-105).

Iowa State is averaging 26 points per game, but it hasn’t had that same success against quality opponents. While defensively, it limited QB Jalon Daniels last week, it still failed to cover as 3.5-point favorites.

Iowa State has struggled to run the ball against quality sides, not getting over 75 yards against either Kansas or Baylor. The Cyclones don’t have a go-to playmaker like Martinez. QB Hunter Dekkers has struggled this season, throwing 6 interceptions.

Martinez, on the other hand, is having one of the best seasons of his career, averaging almost 100 rushing yards per game. Martinez should have success similar to Daniels as they’re both elite threats on the ground.

The Wildcats have more impressive wins over higher-quality opponents like Oklahoma. With that in mind, I’d back them to cover despite being on the road.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 45.5 (-115).

Given how Iowa State has played against Power 5 sides offensively, it only seems smart to play the under. The Cyclones are allowing 14.4 points per game to opponents this season, the 11th fewest in the nation.

While Martinez is a stud, his arm isn’t what makes him dynamic, and rushing the ball keeps the clock moving. I expect this to be a grind-it-out game like the Cyclones are used to.

If that’s the case, UNDER 45.5 (-115) is the side to be on.
