Predicting how far each Big 12 team will advance in the NCAA tournament

How far can each Big 12 team go in the NCAA tournament?

The Big 12 is widely regarded as one of the best conferences in college basketball. The top-to-bottom quality of the league provides competitive games week in and week out during conference play.

Six teams from the Big 12 were selected into the NCAA tournament and each squad has sights set on making a run deep into the bracket.

No. 1 seeds Baylor and Kansas are two of the odds on favorites to win the national championship with No. 3 seeded Texas Tech not far behind. Texas comes in as a No. 6 seed looking for its first March Madness win since 2014. No. 9 TCU and No. 11 Iowa State wrap up the Big 12 members who are qualified for this year’s big dance.

Each of these teams has been battle tested by each other during conference play and is ready to show it on the big stage. The Big 12 is looking to go back-to-back after Baylor cut down the nets at the end of the season.

Here is a prediction of each Big 12 team’s ceiling in the NCAA tournament:

Iowa State vs Texas Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

How did it beat Texas the first time around – it was 79-70 back in mid-January?

It was phenomenal from the field hitting 57%, it was on from three, and it moved the ball around better than it had all season long.

That’s what it has to do again.

It’s a good team at forcing steals, making the extra pass, and cranking up the defense just enough to keep games manageable when the offense isn’t on. This isn’t a lights-out Texas team on offense, it prefers to win tough defensive games, and that all should suit the Cyclones just fine on the road.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Texas Will Win

If the Texas defense bogs things down too much, it’s going to win.

Iowa State had to hit everything to pull off the win in the first meeting, but that was an aberration. It’s an okay shooting team, but it’s not going to be nearly as hot – it can’t be. It’s just not that great from three.

Iowa State wins when it scores. Yeah, duh, that’s how this works, but really, the Cyclones are 10-0 when it scores more than 72 points and 12-1 when it scores more than 66. It’s 4-5 when it scores 66 or fewer.

Gonzaga, Texas, Tech, Iowa State. Those are the only three teams to score more than 66 points Texas this season. All the games were on the road, and all the games were Longhorn losses.

Clamp down, slow down, keep the game low, and Texas wins, because …

What’s Going To Happen

It really is crazy how much Texas needs its D to win.

To take the earlier stat even further, it’s 16-0 when allowing fewer than 60 points and 0-6 when it allows more. There’s one other part to that.

Out of those six losses, five of them were on the road.

This is about to be a low scoring grind, Texas will force a ton of turnovers, and it’ll get out with a good win to push past that loss to Texas Tech.

Kansas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks should be a whole lot more focused and sharp after getting run out of the gym in the stunning home loss to Kentucky.

And only beating Iowa State 62-61 a few weeks ago should get everyone’s attention, too.

It was a grind against the Cyclones the first time around, but Kansas was able to get to the line and it should be able to again.

It was a bit of an aberration – Iowa State fouls a whole lot – close to 19 times per game – and the Jayhawks weren’t able to do even more to force hacks.

Force more than the 15 fouls there were in the first meeting and there won’t be a problem.

NFL Mock Draft: Latest 1st round mock

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Kansas defense hasn’t been consistent enough or food enough.

It’s okay, but it’s not the rock it normally is. No, Iowa State isn’t going to come out and put 85 on the board, but it needs to play the game at its tempo and take advantage of its chances.

It was able to hit 41% from the field in the first meeting, but it couldn’t come up with enough threes at the right time.

Keep this in the 60s again, don’t get bogged down when the Jayhawks are scoring on the inside, keep the ball moving. Of course all teams end up doing well when there are lots of assists, but Iowa State is 10-0 when it comes up with 15 or more.

The problem, though, is …

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is 17-1 when the other team doesn’t get come up with more than 16 assists.

Kentucky came up with 19. Iowa State won’t do that.

The Cyclones should be able to keep this from being a runaway disaster, but it won’t have enough offense in the last ten minutes to overcome the Jayhawk free throws.

Missouri vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

Iowa State fits for Mizzou – there isn’t enough size to matter.

The Cyclones are okay on the inside, but they’re not great on the boards, the don’t get nearly enough defensive rebounds, and they’re about to have problems against a Tiger defense that comes up with a whole lot of blocks.

The guard oriented offense that’s struggling with its consistency from the outside. The attack might have been enough to get by Oklahoma State in a fun overtime battle, but the Texas Tech and TCU defenses shut things down from the outside.

Missouri doesn’t shoot the lights out, but it should be able to generate a whole slew of offensive rebounds and second chances.

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Iowa State Will Win

Missouri is having even more problems than Iowa State.

It battled hard with No. 1 Auburn in a 55-54 loss, but that was the sixth defeat in the last eight games. The offense doesn’t do nearly enough from three – it came up with double-digit threes just once this season – and the D doesn’t force enough mistakes to generate easy points.

Iowa State’s defense should be able to clamp down with enough takeaways to get on the move. Missouri isn’t built to make big comebacks or keep up in any sort of a shootout.

The Tigers are 1-7 when allowing more than 75 points. Iowa State is 9-0 when getting to 75 or more, but …

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t going to be a whole lot of fun offensively. Iowa State doesn’t score enough, Missouri can’t seem to catch any sort of a break and can’t do enough from the outside.

It should make for a game with a few power outages. It’ll come down to mistakes, and Iowa State will force more of them.

Iowa State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

So how does Iowa State pull up from its nosedive?

The threes have to start falling.

They’re not getting a lick of luck lately from the outside, they’re not getting to the free throw line, and they’re struggling to come up with enough easy points off of turnovers to make up for the problems on the outside.

Oklahoma State doesn’t make its free throws on a consistent enough basis, it’s the worst team in the Big 12 from three, and it’s awful on the free throw line.

However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State’s defense makes up for the offense.

It generates a whole lot of mistakes and makes plays on the move, the D generates a ton of blocks, and the aggressive style comes through on the offensive boards with enough second chance points to matter.

How bad has Iowa State been from the outside? Against the solid Texas Tech and TCU defenses it hit 8-of-52 from three and is way too inconsistent overall.

The Oklahoma State pressure should be enough to keep that going. Big 12 opponents are hitting way under 40% from three.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State just isn’t showing well enough, and Oklahoma State isn’t the team to go against if you’re struggling from the field.

The Cowboys might not be winning a ton, but the D has been good through the rough 4-7 run.

There won’t be anything pretty about this game, but it’ll be a tight throughout and close late. Oklahoma State will get the late defensive stop to survive.

How to watch, listen and stream Texas vs. Iowa State on Saturday

Texas travels to Iowa State for a pivotal Big 12 matchup.

No. 21 Texas has another tough road test in front of them as they travel to Ames for a top 25 Big 12 matchup against No. 15 Iowa State this weekend.

Both teams enter this game with identical 13-3 records but are trending in opposite directions. Texas is 3-1 since the start of Big 12 play while Iowa State is 1-3. The Cyclones lost close games to top 10 teams Baylor and Kansas while also getting crushed by Oklahoma.

The Horns still have not found the level of consistency they desire. Texas is coming off an ugly loss to Oklahoma State and a dominant win over an Oklahoma team many consider better than the Pokes.

Winning on the road has been a challenge for Texas this season. Texas is 1-3 in true road games this season.

Here is how to tune in for Saturday’s game:

When: Saturday, Jan. 15, 1 p.m. CT

Where: James H. Hilton Coliseum (Ames, Iowa)

Oklahoma battles back, tops No. 11 Iowa State 79-66

Oklahoma rallied back and topped Iowa State to improve to 2-1 in Big 12 play. Here’s three takeaways from the Sooners’ big win.

It looked early in the second half like No. 11 Iowa State was going to keep Oklahoma at arm’s length. The Cyclones led 47-36 with 17:11 to play and then 53-43 with 14:13 remaining.

And Iowa State’s Izaiah Brockington and Tyrese Hunter couldn’t miss. That’s when OU locked in defensively and flipped the script, winning 79-66. Here’s a look at three things that stood out.

Umoja Gibson and Tanner Groves delivered

Senior guard Umoja Gibson scored 20 points and senior forward Tanner Groves added 16 points. Gibson showcased his offensive game is expanding, too.

“I thought Mo had a really nice second half. Made some shots. He shot-faked and hit that little pull-up in our run, got one to the rim in our run. He did some different things. He didn’t just launch if they were flying. He did a couple things off the dribble. Mo’s game off the dribble is really starting to be a factor for us,” Oklahoma head men’s basketball coach Porter Moser said.

Bijan Cortes and Jacob Groves offered big contributions off the bench

Freshman guard Bijan Cortes and junior forward Jacob Groves played arguably the best games of their respective seasons. Off the bench, Cortes added five assists, four points and three rebounds in 17 minutes and Groves delivered nine points and three rebounds in 10 minutes.

“Jacob Groves came in and he’s such a big target and he’s a very good cutter and Bijan found him a number of times. I thought he gave us a good lift off the bench. I’ve been talking about the bench. You know, you’ve got Bijan, C.J. Noland gave you four points, Jacob gave you nine and then Bijan gave you the five assists and four points. So, our bench was crucial. We’ve been talking about that in Big 12. You’ve got to develop that bench. Those guys are really starting to come on,” Moser said.

Oklahoma bounced back from the Baylor loss and defended home court

This is really the most important thing for Oklahoma. After losing at No. 1 Baylor earlier in the week 84-74, the Sooners showed once again that they are resilient.

Oklahoma is now 3-0 following losses this season. With the win, OU is 12-3 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play.

“I don’t really think about holding serve. It’s not in my [thought process]. I was just thinking about what do we have to do to Iowa State this game. Now that it’s over, hell yeah I’m glad we held serve,” Moser said.
