Kansas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

It’s been fun, and we’ve all had a good time, but Kansas is overdue to face a run defense.

West Virginia and Houston are fine, and Duke hasn’t been bad, but the Jayhawk attack hasn’t faced anything like the Big 12’s best run defense.

Iowa State is seventh in the nation against the run allowing just 2.7 yards per carry and not getting hit with any big plays.

Kansas can do more than run the ball – QB Jalon Daniels has been brilliant so far at limiting mistakes and keeping everything moving – but it all starts by being able to grind a bit.

And then there’s the other side. The Kansas O has been wonderful. The D … not so much. You can throw on this bunch, Hunter Dekkers and the Cyclone passing game should be good for at least 250 yards and closer to 300, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas is dominating offensively on third downs.

The D isn’t up to snuff yet. It’s going to give up yards, and it’s going to give up plenty of points. However, it catches a break because the offense is always moving.

It’s converting 67% of its third down chances – second in the nation behind Minnesota – and that’s partly due to the great offensive line play and the ability of Daniels to make things happen under pressure.

The defense isn’t going to get hit with too many big plays. Dekkers and Iowa State dink and dunk and don’t take too many chances, but offense turned it over a bit too much for its style with two key picks in the loss to Baylor and three turnovers in the fight with Iowa.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The defense. Iowa State will bring it, and it’s going to be enough to slow down this runaway Jayhawk train.

Daniels will throw for over 200 yards and the KU passing game will do enough to do what it wants offensively – to a point.

Iowa State will have the ball for over 35 minutes, the defense will hold up down the stretch, and in a tough, competitive game, the Cyclones will get out of Lawrence with a strong win.

Kansas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

The Jayhawks should be a whole lot more focused and sharp after getting run out of the gym in the stunning home loss to Kentucky.

And only beating Iowa State 62-61 a few weeks ago should get everyone’s attention, too.

It was a grind against the Cyclones the first time around, but Kansas was able to get to the line and it should be able to again.

It was a bit of an aberration – Iowa State fouls a whole lot – close to 19 times per game – and the Jayhawks weren’t able to do even more to force hacks.

Force more than the 15 fouls there were in the first meeting and there won’t be a problem.

NFL Mock Draft: Latest 1st round mock

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Kansas defense hasn’t been consistent enough or food enough.

It’s okay, but it’s not the rock it normally is. No, Iowa State isn’t going to come out and put 85 on the board, but it needs to play the game at its tempo and take advantage of its chances.

It was able to hit 41% from the field in the first meeting, but it couldn’t come up with enough threes at the right time.

Keep this in the 60s again, don’t get bogged down when the Jayhawks are scoring on the inside, keep the ball moving. Of course all teams end up doing well when there are lots of assists, but Iowa State is 10-0 when it comes up with 15 or more.

The problem, though, is …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is 17-1 when the other team doesn’t get come up with more than 16 assists.

Kentucky came up with 19. Iowa State won’t do that.

The Cyclones should be able to keep this from being a runaway disaster, but it won’t have enough offense in the last ten minutes to overcome the Jayhawk free throws.

Kansas (14-7) vs Iowa State (2-13) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

Iowa State is having problems.

It has yet to win a Big 12 game, and while it’s been close once in a while, there hasn’t been any luck.

The offense just isn’t good enough – it hasn’t hit 40% from the field in five of the last six games – and there’s no rebounding whatsoever.

And that includes the meeting two days ago in Lawrence.

Kansas won 97-64 when the Cyclones couldn’t make much of anything from outside and was outrebounded 41-27. This might not be the dominant Jayhawk team of previous seasons, but it’s still amazing on the boards and makes a lot of threes because it shoots a ton of them. So …

Why Iowa State Will Win

What does Iowa State do well?

It has to be able to slow things down as much as possible, and it has to try getting to the basket and force fouls. It’s great on the free throw line, but the defense just can’t stop anything from the field on a regular basis.

It came close to getting by West Virginia a few weeks ago, and why? It hit its shots – 44% is massive for this team – because it moved the ball around as well as it had all season long.

What’s Going To Happen

It might not be 97-64 bad, but it’ll be another dominant performance by the Jayhawks after they get past a rough first ten minutes. The Cyclones will start missing their shots, KU will get the rebounds, and then it’ll get ugly again.

Kansas (0-5) vs Iowa State (3-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

It’s all about improving and finding parts to build around, and freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels appears to be someone who can be one key guy going forward.

He wasn’t phenomenal against Kansas State – he has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season – but he ran for two scores.

Kansas isn’t doing a whole lot of things right, but its not getting penalized, it’s generating a little bit of pressure behind the line, and the pass defense hasn’t been totally miserable. However …

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Jayhawk offense simply can’t score. The offensive line isn’t doing enough to give everyone time to work, there aren’t any long drives to take control of games, and as promising as Daniels is, there’s nothing big happening down the field yet.

Iowa State has been rocky, but the offensive line has been outstanding in pass protection and the O isn’t making enough big mistakes to give the Jayhawks easy chances.

KU has yet to come up with more than 370 yards of total offense and failed to get to 200 in two of the previous three games. A few early Cyclone scores end this.

What’s Going To Happen

Five wins in a row and nine in the last ten years. Iowa State doesn’t historically own a whole lot of series, but there haven’t been any problem against Kansas. It’s not going to change now.

It’ll take a total Cyclone meltdown for this to be anything but an easy double-digit win. Coming off a loss to Oklahoma State, Iowa State will be focused.

Kansas (22-3) vs. Iowa State (11-14) Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

It’s been a rough year – and the first time around wasn’t pretty at home in a 79-53 loss to the Jayhawks – but this is still a dangerous team at forcing takeaways and coming up with blocks for stops.

Can the Cyclones hold down the KU outside game? They’re not great at stopping teams from three, but that’s not a problem against a Jayhawk offense that doesn’t do much to bomb away.

The D has to come up with easy points off the mistakes, and Kansas has to be a bit off, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas isn’t that bad from the outside, and Iowa State really can’t stop anyone from hitting threes.

Iowa State is great at moving the ball around, but Kansas is too good at closing out on the three, it’s better on the inside, and it’s not going to allow enough second chance points to matter.

How did the Jayhawks win the first time around? They hit everything from three – connecting on more than 50% from the outside – stuffed the Iowa State shooters, and got out to a massive lead and cruised from there.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is on a roll, playing stronger and sharper as the ten-game winning streak has gone on. Iowa State will be better in the first half than it was in the first game, but it won’t be nearly enough as the offense goes cold in the second half.

Kansas at Iowa State odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Kansas Jayhawks vs. Iowa State Cyclones sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and tips.

The Kansas Jayhawks (11-2, 1-0 Big 12) and Iowa State Cyclones (7-6, 0-1 Big 12) meet at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday. We analyze the Kansas-Iowa State odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

The Jayhawks are ranked third in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll.

Kansas at Iowa State: Three things you need to know

1. Kansas enters play 6-2 ATS in the past eight games overall, and 5-2 ATS in the past seven against teams with a winning overall record. However, it’s just 3-10 ATS in the past 13 games on the road.

2. Iowa State is 2-6 ATS in the past eight games against teams with a winning overall record, and is 0-5 ATS in the previous five as a home underdog.

3. The Jayhawks enter this game third in the nation in field-goal percentage at 50.9, led by F Udoka Azubuike at a ridiculous 81.1 percent (77-for-95). They’re 16th defensively with a 37.3 FG% against.

Prediction

Kansas 80, Iowa State 73

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. Kansas (-286) will cost you nearly three times your return on investment, which just isn’t a good way to consistently win. For example, if you win three of these type bets and lose one, you end up about even. Why risk it? PASS and focus on the spread (below).

Against the Spread (ATS)

KANSAS (-6.5, -110) is a much better play laying the points over Iowa State (+6.5, -110). Not only has the road team cashed in six of the past eight in this series, which points to KU, the Cyclones are 2-6 ATS in the eight tries against winning teams and barely above .500 overall on the season.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 146 (-110) is the way to go here. Kansas has a very efficient offense, not taking a lot of bad shots while limiting turnovers. But, the Under is 7-3 in the Jayhawks’ past 10 overall. However, the Over is 5-1 in their past six against winning teams.

For Iowa State, it’s all Over, all the time. The Over is 7-1 in the Cyclones’ past eight as a home ‘dog, and 5-1 in the past six against teams with a winning record. The Over is also 3-0-1 in their past four following a straight-up loss.

Kansas (3-7) vs. Iowa State (6-4) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

Iowa State has a high-powered offense that’s putting up big plays and yards in chunks, but when Kansas is on, it can do that, too. As long as it’s not screwing up, it can go off.

The offense has fallen flat lately – the running game hasn’t worked over the last two games – but the passing attack is moving the chains and doing just fine when it’s not turning the ball over.

What’s been KU’s biggest issue over the last few weeks? Giveaways.

The defense hasn’t come up with a takeaway over the last two games, and the offense got picked off five times. How were the the Jayhawks able to be interesting for the few weeks before the struggles? No giveaways.

The Jayhawks went three straight games without a turnover, and gave it up just once in the win over Texas Tech.

Iowa State’s defense isn’t bad, but it doesn’t force takeaways on a consistent basis. Ten of the team’s 11 turnovers on the year have been generated in just four games.

KU has to hope that this is one of the games when the D isn’t forcing mistakes.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Iowa State Will Win

Yeah … the Kansas running game.

There’s talent and experience in the backfield, but it’s all falling flat over the last few weeks.

Oklahoma State isn’t being confused with the New England Patriots defensively, but it held the Jayhawks to just 39 rushing yards on 24 carries last week. Kansas State allowed just 61 yards the game before.

Kansas has had a few explosions here and there – ripping up Boston College and Texas – but it’s not getting consistent enough performances from the line or the rest of the offense.

Iowa State’s defense has been able to hold up just fine, for the most part. It’s second in the Big 12 against the run, it’s generating sacks on a regular basis, and it should be able to overwhelm the KU offensive front.

[lawrence-related id=500899]

What’s Going To Happen

The Cyclones will win on the lines. The defensive front will do its part, the offensive line that’s doing a great job in pass protection will keep the limited Jayhawk pass rush from generating anything to bother QB Brock Purdy, and it’ll be a fifth-straight win in the series.

Kansas at Iowa State odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturdya’s Kansas at Iowa State college football matchup, with college football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Kansas Jayhawks (3-7, 1-6) and Iowa State Cyclones (6-4, 4-3) hook up Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa, for a Big 12 battle at noon ET.

We analyze the Kansas-Iowa State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Kansas at Iowa State: Three things you need to know

1. The Jayhawks will not qualify for a bowl game yet again this season, but they haven’t been a pushover like recent seasons. They’re a respectable 3-2 ATS across the past five, and 2-2 ATS in the past four on the road.

2. Iowa State QB Brock Purdy has rolled up 3,203 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions while also running for seven scores. The Cyclones rank eighth in the nation, posting 326.3 passing yards per game.

3. Kansas ranks 120th in the country with 470.6 total yards per game allowed, 125th with 232.7 rushing yards per game allowed, and T-107th in points allowed at 33.1 per game.

Prediction

Iowa State 45, Kansas 30

Moneyline (ML)

There is currently no moneyline available at the time of publishing.

Against the Spread (ATS)

KANSAS (+24.5, -110) has some decent skill position players like RB Pooka Williams Jr. and WR Andrew Parchment, so the Jayhawks are more than capable of hanging in a shootout. Make no mistake, Iowa State (-24.5, -110) is the better team here, but the Jayhawks have the tools to get involved in a shootout. Just ask the Texas Longhorns.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER (58.5, -106) is a tremendous play, as Iowa State’s pass attack is outstanding and Kansas has a very leaky defense. The best thing for over bettors will be Iowa State jumping out to a big lead and Kansas passing its way back into the game. It is surprising this line wasn’t in the sixties. Get in before it rises.
