Report: Saints planning second interviews with coaches still in the playoffs

NFL Network reports the New Orleans Saints are planning second interviews with coaches still in the playoffs like Joe Brady and Kellen Moore:

With the news of highly coveted defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn accepting the New York Jets head coaching job, the New Orleans Saints will continue the search for their lead guy.

It was reported earlier in the week that coaches Mike McCarthy, Anthony Weaver, and Mike Kafka would be meeting with the team sometime this week after the recent snowstorm led to delay. Along with these candidates though, the team is also expected to meet for a second time with offensive coordinators Joe Brady and Kellen Moore.

A meeting with these two, will almost certainly come after this weekend’s games regardless of what happens with their respective teams. It does help that the Super Bowl is in New Orleans this year, which would make it a quick trip if either were to make it to the big game. If not, obviously the team will be able to fly either guy after a loss.

There is also the potential for more candidates to enter into the mix, possibly Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury whom the team requested to interview a couple weeks ago. We’ll likely learn more about where these candidates stand in the next week or so when the weather permits travel and when playoff coaches become available.

Saints officially reschedule in-person interviews with several head coach candidates

The New Orleans Saints officially rescheduled their in-person interviews with several head coach candidates after a historic snowstorm struck the Gulf South:

The New Orleans Saints have officially rescheduled in-person interviews with a couple of head coaching candidates in the wake of the city’s record snowfall, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The team will be flying both Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka to New Orleans in the next couple of days. Weaver is expected to arrive ahead of Kafka this Friday, while Kafka will be looking to interview on Saturday.

It was also noted that former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay packers head coach Mike McCarthy will likely have his first interview with the team sometime next week. Philadelphia Eagles OC Kellen Moore and his Buffalo Bills counterpart Joe Brady are also expected to interview soon, with the date pending as both will be coaching for a shot at the Super Bowl this weekend.

With the league’s top candidates now off the board, the Saints will likely slow down their approach a bit and thoroughly evaluate each of their options going forward.

Mickey Loomis’ approach to head coaching search: ‘We’re not recruiting’

Mickey Loomis doesn’t believe the Saints need to sell themselves to candidates on why they’re an attractive landing spot: ‘We’re not recruiting’

As the New Orleans Saints begin the second stage of their head coach search with in-person interviews, it feels like an appropriate time to look at Mickey Loomis’ approach to meeting with prospective coaches.

Loomis doesn’t believe he has to sell why the Saints would be attractive to coaches, because that’s not what the interview process is about to him. Instead of saying, ‘this is what we have to offer,’ Loomis believes discussing visions and how they align is the proper way to look at interviewing coaches.

Loomis elaborated on that point: “The right thing to do is not try to sell. The right thing to do is lay out who you are, what your vision is on both sides and make sure we can have a collective vision. That’s how we’re going to be successful. It’s not going to be about selling.”

His mindset is “we’re not recruiting, we’re interviewing, and they’re interviewing us. It’s about right fit.” Not selling doesn’t equate to not answering questions. Loomis isn’t approaching this with the logo on his shirt and expecting candidates to jump.

Candidates will have things they want and questions they want answered, and Loomis, along with the rest of the people in the room, will answer those questions with full transparency. Hopefully it leads them to the right candidate for the job.

Weather delays Saints’ scheduled in-person head coach interviews

The Saints were supposed to meet with Mike Kafka, Aaron Glenn and Anthony Weaver on Tuesday and Wednesday but Mother Nature had other plans:

The New Orleans Saints were ready to start their round of in-person interviews, but weather has pushed their plans back to later this week, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

As things stood on Tuesday, Mike Kafka, Aaron Glenn and Anthony Weaver had scheduled interviews with New Orleans. Kafka was in line first for Tuesday, while Glenn and Weaver were scheduled for Wednesday. All of these have been pushed back due to the snow in New Orleans, but there’s no official date set yet.

This update doesn’t impact Mike McCarthy. His interview was already planned for later this week but without a specific date. If anything, this puts all the prospective coaches in the same boat.

Outside of Glenn, the Saints aren’t at risk of their other candidates taking a job before later this week. And frankly, the weather has no impact on Glenn’s decision either. If Glenn makes it out of New York without a deal completed on Tuesday, he will wait on the weather to clear up in New Orleans.

Report: Saints scheduling in-person interview with ex-Cowboys head coach

The New Orleans Saints are scheduling an in-person interview with ex-Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. It would be a bit of a homecoming for him:

It’s been rumored for weeks, but the New Orleans Saints are finally scheduling a sit-down interview with former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy previously met with the Chicago Bears after his contract with Dallas expired last week. Because he’s not under contract with another team, he’s free to meet in person without setting up an initial virtual interview.

Per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill, that’s going to happen later this week, with exact timing depending on the weather. A rare winter snowstorm is headed for Louisiana and the Gulf South which may limit travel in some areas. The Saints currently plan on interviewing New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka on Tuesday as well as defensive coordinators Anthony Weaver (Miami Dolphins) and Aaron Glenn (Detroit Lions) on Wednesday.

These interviews are capped at three hours by NFL rules, so while McCarthy could fit in on Wednesday his meeting may be scheduled later in the week. And inclement weather conditions could force the Saints to reschedule someone here or there.

McCarthy is a bit of a controversial candidate. Despite ranking top-10 among active coaches in win percentage, he’s been cast as a retread with some fans questioning whether he could rebuild the Saints. His history with the organization makes him an obviously appealing candidate to them — he was their offensive coordinator from 2000 to 2004, having worked with Mickey Loomis and been hired by Randy Mueller, who is consulting on the ongoing search. But will they cut a deal? Let’s see.

We asked Notre Dame players about Marcus Freeman’s handsomeness, and they delivered

Marcus Freeman is “young, he’s fit, he’s got a good haircut,” according to his players.

ATLANTA — The 2024-25 college football season is nearly over with Ohio State and Notre Dame facing off in Monday’s College Football Playoff national championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Leading up to the game, For The Win spoke with Notre Dame players at media day, and we asked them a very important question: How would you describe coach Marcus Freeman’s good looks?

It’s no secret Freeman is a handsome guy, along with being a successful coach who led his team to the national championship game in his third year at the helm. Earlier this season, USA TODAY Sports described him as “widely considered the most handsome coach in a profession of people who perpetually look like they need more sleep”.

And leading into the national championship game against the Buckeyes, there’s been plenty of talk about X’s and O’s, but a lot of folks also can’t help but note Freeman’s handsomeness.

So we asked Fighting Irish players to weigh in, and their answers didn’t disappoint.

Saints schedule second interview with highly-regarded defensive coordinator

Miami Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver has a second interview with the Saints, this time in person. Don’t overlook him in their head coach search:

This is interesting. Mike Kafka isn’t the only candidate visiting the New Orleans Saints for a second head coach interview early this week — NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver will be in the city Wednesday for a sit-down with team brass.

Weaver has a strong resume. Before joining the Dolphins for 2024, he worked closely with John Harbaugh on the Baltimore Ravens from 2021 to 2023; his titles included defensive line coach, run game coordinator, and assistant head coach. And before that he coached under Bill O’Brien on the Houston Texans for several years and worked as a position coach on Doug Marrone’s Buffalo Bills staff. He got his start in the NFL as an assistant for Rex Ryan on the New York Jets.

So he’s someone with a couple of notable ties to the Saints; his very first coaching job was working for Urban Meyer at Florida as a graduate assistant back in 2010. But Weaver has done really well when given the opportunity to call plays for himself. His Dolphins finished 10th-best in yards allowed per play (5.3, half a yard better than the Saints). They were 9th in rushing yards allowed per game (103.7, a full 37.7 yards better than the Saints). They were also one of the best defenses on third downs and in the red zone, both areas the Saints struggled at times.

If nothing else we know Weaver can call a defense. It’s impressive that Weaver previously received callbacks in interviews for head coach openings with the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders. The high praise his former bosses like Harbaugh have for him speaks volumes. We’ll have to wait and see how this second interview goes, but Weaver clearly shouldn’t be overlooked in the Saints head coach search.

New Orleans Saints announce they completed head coach interview with Eagles OC

The New Orleans Saints announced they have completed a head coach interview with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore:

The New Orleans Saints have completed yet another virtual interview with an offensive coordinator in the playoffs, this time meeting with Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

This was Moore’s first season in charge of the Eagle’s offense and third team in as many years. He broke onto the scene a few years back when he was with the Dallas Cowboys, under fellow Saints head coach candidate Mike McCarthy.

Philadelphia had the eighth-ranked offense in the NFL this past season with 367.2 yards per game. They had the seventh-best scoring offense with 27.2 points per game.

Since the Eagles are still in the playoffs and Moore is still under contract, it was an introductory virtual interview. They could do an in-person follow up once Philadelphia is either eliminated or wins the Super Bowl, if things went well today.

Saints will interview three head coach candidates this weekend

The New Orleans Saints will interview three head coach candidates this weekend. Here’s when Kellen Moore, Kliff Kingsbury, and Joe Brady will speak with Mickey Loomis:

The New Orleans Saints have scheduled their next slate of head coaching interviews for the coming weekend, all of whom specialize on the offensive side of the ball.

Per the MMQB’s Albert Breer, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, along with his Philadelphia Eagles counterpart Kellen Moore and Buffalo Bills  play caller Joe Brady, will all conduct virtual interviews with the team prior to their divisional round matchups this weekend.

Kingsbury and the Commanders will face the Detroit Lions on Saturday, the current team of another Saints head coach candidate, Aaron Glenn. The matchup between the two play callers on their respective sides of the ball should set up for an exciting watch for Saints fans.

Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore who is coming off of a dominating win against Green Bay, will be facing off against the winner of the Vikings-Rams matchup on Monday night. The winner will end up playing the Eagles in Philly on Sunday. Joe Brady and his Bills already have their hands full after a blowout win against Denver. They will be taking on MVP candidates Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in Buffalo. It’s a game where the pressure will be most certainly on Brady and the offense to keep up with Lamar and Co.

This weekend will allow us yet another opportunity to further evaluate each of these candidates and get a feel for what they could potentially bring to the Saints offense if given the job down the line.
