Saints place right tackle Ryan Ramczyk on injured reserve, ending his season

The New Orleans Saints placed starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk on injured reserve, ending his season with just two games left before the playoffs:

The New Orleans Saints placed starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk on injured reserve, very likely ending his season. There are just two games left in the regular season so the only way Ramczyk could get back on the field is if the Saints win those last two matchups as well as a couple of playoff games. That’s easier said than done, especially without him in the lineup.

This is a tough loss, even if fans haven’t seen Ramczyk play up to his usual standards before missing the last two games because of this injury. But it seemed to be coming after Ramczyk recently opened up to reporters about the seriousness of his injury. He has a degenerative knee condition that’s resulted in cartilage loss which may leave him with lifelong problems in the joint. He’ll explore all of his options in the offseason, including surgery and, potentially, an early retirement.

In the meantime, look for the Saints to continue to start Landon Young at the right tackle spot. The former Kentucky left tackle has learned to play on the right side with New Orleans over the last few years and has been a serviceable backup in recent weeks, with Cameron Erving backing him up from the practice squad. But if this is it for Ramczyk, the Saints may need to look into a long-term solution at right tackle.

Chiefs activate WR Mecole Hardman from injured reserve

Chiefs activate WR Mecole Hardman from injured reserve

The Kansas City Chiefs made significant roster changes on Saturday before their New Year’s Eve matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. A veteran offensive spark is set to return, while a defensive role player was waived.

Mecole Hardman will officially be off of injured reserve and have his questionable status from the latest injury report removed ahead of Week 17. Hardman had been out of action since his Week 11 injury against the Philadelphia Eagles. The thumb injury suffered in the Monday night loss in November was initially believed not to be serious since he did return in the second half. The questionable status lifted from his name is a positive trend that he could see action on Sunday.

The Chiefs also activated practice squad players, running back Keaontay Ingram and defensive tackle Mike Pennel. Defensive tackle Matt Dickerson was waived as part of the roster moves on Saturday; he appeared in eleven games this season as a reserve defensive lineman. The 28-year-old could potentially return to the team’s practice squad if another team does not claim him.

Hardman fills an immediate void left by Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore, both dealing with injuries. He should also have a presence on special teams in the punt return game.

James Houston still not designated to return from I.R.

Lions EDGE James Houston still not designated to return from I.R., and that means a return during the regular season is unlikely

C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Jason Cabinda have been practicing with the Detroit Lions for the last few days. The team started the 21-day clock on their return from injured reserve on Wednesday of last week, and they could be activated in time for Saturday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Another player on injured reserve has yet to have his return window opened. EDGE James Houston is still unable to practice or prove he’s healthy enough for the Lions to designate him to return. That is in spite of head coach Dan Campbell indicating on Tuesday, “there’s a good chance we start Houston’s clock”.

Houston suffered a fractured ankle and high ankle sprain in Week 2, September 17th, while playing special teams. It’s a significant injury that typically sidelines players for at least four months; Dak Prescott, Drake London and Jaylen Waddle are all examples of the same injury in recent times, as noted by Dr. Jimmy Liao here:

While there is optimism from both inside and outside the organization on Houston, and the player himself has expressed his intentions to be back on the field by the end of the regular season, the timeframe isn’t quite matching up. Given how long the Lions typically have returning players ramp up in practice — every I.R. return in the last two seasons has had at least one full week of practice before being activated — if Houston’s clock doesn’t start on Thursday, it seems very unlikely we see him play before the postseason.

Houston burst onto the scene with eight sacks in the final seven games of 2022, his rookie season. He played limited snaps in the first games this year prior to being injured against Seattle, recording one QB hit and one tackle in 31 total snaps.

Update: Per Dannie Rogers of the Lions, the team did start Houston’s window on Thursday.

Patriots place RB Rhamondre Stevenson on IR, ending his 2023 season

The Patriots have placed running back Rhamondre Stevenson on injured reserve.

The New England Patriots have announced on Wednesday they are placing running back Rhamondre Stevenson on injured reserve.

Stevenson suffered a high ankle sprain in the Patriots’ December 3 meeting with the Los Angeles Chargers. There was always a long-shot chance of him returning, and it wouldn’t make sense at this point anyways with there only being two more games left on the regular season schedule.

The Patriots’ move to sign former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn to the practice squad added depth behind Ezekiel Elliott, Kevin Harris and JaMycal Hasty.

Stevenson is expected to be a major part of the Patriots’ plans in 2024, and it makes sense for him to recover completely from the ankle injury and look to come back stronger next season.

The backup running backs have done a tremendous job of stepping up in his absence. Elliott has especially proven his value with his versatility as both a rusher and receiver, while Harris has come through big with multiple angry runs, including a touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15.

Michael Thomas, Marshon Lattimore not expected to return vs. Buccaneers

Saints coach Dennis Allen says he doesn’t expect Michael Thomas or Marshon Lattimore to return this week against the Buccaneers:

Help isn’t on the way ahead of the New Orleans Saints’ most important game of the year. Head coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday that he doesn’t expect  wide receiver Michael Thomas or cornerback Marshon Lattimore to return from injured reserve for Sunday’s game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Both players went on injured reserve after the Saints’ Week 10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings; a helmet to the knee sidelined Thomas, while Lattimore’s ankle was injured when a teammate rolled up on him while making a tackle. So they’re both going to miss at least six games this season after missing most of last year with unrelated injuries.

Will the third time be the charm in 2024? The team must make a decision on Thomas, choosing to either extend his contract again or release him, but Lattimore’s contract makes it tough to move on from him. Paulson Adebo has played really well in his absence and there are some young promising players at receiver like A.T. Perry who could use more reps. We’ll see how things work out in the spring, but for now the Saints need to figure out ways to win without some of their best players.

Chiefs place RB Jerick McKinnon on injured reserve

The #Chiefs placed veteran running back Jerick McKinnon on their injured reserve list on Sunday.

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs placed veteran running back Jerick McKinnon on their injured reserve list. The news came down on Christmas Eve, less than 24 hours before their Week 16 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the breaking news on social media as the Chiefs will be without the battle-tested veteran for the rest of the regular season. McKinnon’s placement on the injured reserve list will keep him out for at least four weeks as he recovers from a groin injury that has already held him out of two games this season.

He left last week’s victory over the New England Patriots early due to the nagging injury as the team has taken steps to give him more time to recover.

McKinnon will end his regular season with 21 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown, with most of his production in the passing game consisting of 25 receptions for 192 yards and four touchdowns. He notably had 52 receptions, 512 yards, and nine touchdowns last season, creating a unique red-zone chemistry with Patrick Mahomes on the way to a Super Bowl title.

The early expectation is that Clyde Edwards-Helaire will become the regular third down running back in McKinnon’s absence, while rookie Deneric Prince could see some time on the field as position depth. The former LSU standout and starter for the Chiefs finished last week’s victory in New England with 37 yards rushing, four receptions for 64 yards, and a highlight reel red zone touchdown grab.

Bucs WR Rakim Jarrett opens 21-day return window off IR

Jarrett was placed on injured reserve after Tampa Bay’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be getting some wide receiver depth back in the fold sooner rather than later.

FOX Sports’ Greg Auman announced that wideout Rakim Jarrett is opening the 21-day window to return to the team following an injury to his quadriceps against the San Francisco 49ers. As such, Jarrett has 20 days to be activated off injured reserve and to the active roster — if he isn’t (though that would be highly unlikely), he will not be allowed to return to the team this season.

Jarrett has played both special teams and on the offense during his rookie year in Tampa Bay, where he has acquired 60 yards on four receptions. Most of those yards came from one play, where he caught a 41-yard pass from Baker Mayfield against the 49ers.

His presence has been filled in for by WR David Moore, who was signed to the active roster and caught a touchdown pass against the Green Bay Packers in Week 15.

Twitter reacts to Skyy Moore’s placement on Chiefs’ injured reserve list

Fans took to Twitter to express their feelings about #Chiefs WR Skyy Moore’s placement on Kansas City’s injured reserve list.

Skyy Moore has had a rocky start to his NFL career after being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. The modest production he has managed hasn’t impressed many fans who had hoped Moore could blossom into one of Patrick Mahomes’ top targets in 2023.

The former Western Michigan Bronco was placed on Kansas City’s injured reserve list on Monday after the Chiefs’ Week 15 victory over the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusets. Moore only saw the field in 25 percent of Kansas City’s offensive snaps against the Patriots and wasn’t targeted by Mahomes in the game.

Fans on social media made their voices heard regarding Moore’s placement on the Chiefs’ injured reserve list and didn’t hold back in expressing their thoughts about the mercurial second-year receiver’s contributions to the team this season.

Check out some of Twitter’s top reactions to Kansas City’s latest roster move below:

Chiefs place WR Skyy Moore on injured reserve

The #Chiefs placed second-year wide receiver Skyy Moore on their injured reserve list on Monday.

The Kansas City Chiefs placed second-year wide receiver Skyy Moore on their injured reserve list on Monday after beating the New England Patriots in Week 15.

Moore’s placement on the injured reserve list will keep him out for at least four weeks as he recovers from a knee injury that limited his use against New England.

With Moore’s spot on the 53-man roster open, preseason standout Justyn Ross is expected to fill the gap at the receiver position on Kansas City’s depth chart, which could lead to increased playing time for the former Clemson star.

While this move may not have massive implications for the Chiefs offense in Week 16, it could have serious ramifications in the playoffs if Kansas City has to face a defense with a formidable secondary.

Moore may not have been the Chiefs’ most productive pass catcher, but without him on the field, Kansas City will lose one of Patrick Mahomes’ most trusted targets at a time when the receiver position has become the object of serious concern.

Payton Turner designated to return from IR, won’t play vs. Giants

Payton Turner has worked hard to get back on the field after dislocated two toes in the Saints’ season-opener. He’s been designated to return to practice:

Here’s some positive progress from Payton Turner. The third-year defensive end dislocated two toes in the New Orleans Saints’ season opener, derailing what had been a productive summer for him. Turner didn’t miss a single rep at training camp and was active in all three Saints preseason games. It was a frustrating setback for a player who finally looked ready to step up.

And now he’s on his way back. The Saints designated Turner to return from injured reserve on Friday, opening his 21-day window in which to practice with the team and gain clearance to suit up in games again. It’s too soon for him to play on Sunday against the New York Giants, but it’s a positive development. Hopefully he can make an impact in the final three games down the stretch and, possibly, the playoffs.

The Saints pass rush can use all the help it can get. They’re tied for the third-fewest sacks in the league going into Week 15 (23). Their former sacks leader Trey Hendrickson has more sacks for the Cincinnati Bengals than the entire New Orleans defensive line put together. Getting a spark from Turner in the final weeks would be huge. Cameron Jordan has lost a step and Carl Granderson is their only real force off the edge; rookie draft pick Isaiah Foskey has been in and out of the lineup with a quadriceps injury. Here’s hoping Turner’s arrow keeps trending up and yields real results in the weeks ahead.
