Driver to wear Notre Dame-type helmet at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The Irish inspire an Irish driver.

Notre Dame football and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are two of the most beloved sports institutions in Indiana. It’s surprising that the two don’t come together more often. However, that will come to pass May 10 and 11 during the two races for the Sonsio Grand Prix for the Indy NXT series. James Roe, who appropriately hails from Ireland, will drive in a helmet that might as well have come direct from the Notre Dame campus:

For the uninitiated, Indy NXT is the level directly below IndyCar, the governing body that puts on the Indianapolis 500 every year. Hopefully, Roe will get to be part of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing in the distant future and put this helmet in the real spotlight. For now though, this representation will do.

In Indy NXT’s lone race so far this season, the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 10, Roe, who drives for Andretti Global, finished 16th. He next will run in the Grand Prix of Alabama on April 28.

It was another tough road loss for Michigan State basketball at Indiana on Sunday, and Tom Izzo wasn’t thrilled with the performance, despite being proud of his team for fighting through a rough night.

Izzo didn’t like the shots that his team took down the stretch as they lost a late lead.

This is one regular season that I think Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball won’t mind seeing go to the wayside, but there is still one more game at Indiana where the Spartans can change some of their story before the postseason begins.

On Friday, Tom Izzo spoke to the media about his team and the match-up, and you can watch that below:

Wisconsin enters needing a win to continue a mini-streak dating back to its win over Ohio State. A win against Indiana, and the Badgers will have won three of four after the horrid stretch to start February.

Good news for the team’s chances: Indiana is ranked No. 103 by KenPom, No. 104 in the NET rankings and No. 106 in ESPN’s BPI. The Hoosiers are 2-7 in their last nine contests, including three straight losses to Purdue, Northwestern and Nebraska.

Wisconsin, meanwhile, is 2-0 in its last two Peacock games — a 62-54 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes and 74-70 win over the Maryland Terrapins. Maybe that can be a sign of continued good things to come.

If fans somehow still don’t have a subscription, it costs $5.99 per month, or $59.99 for the entire year. This is Wisconsin’s last Peacock game of the 2023-24 regular season.

Lake Michigan serves up record burbot for Indiana angler

Anthony Burke caught a 14-pound, 3.6-ounce burbot to shatter the previous record by nearly three pounds.

An Indiana angler has shattered a state record with his recent Lake Michigan catch of a 14-pound, 3.6-ounce burbot.

Anthony Burke’s catch on Jan. 6 eclipsed the previous record by nearly three pounds and marked the third time in 13 months that a new state burbot record had been established.

Burbot are native to Lake Michigan and spend most of their time in extremely deep water off Michigan and Illinois, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

They migrate into shallower Indiana waters during the fall and winter to feed and spawn.

“Unseasonably warm weather and light winds on Lake Michigan the last several winters have provided boaters with a longer open-water fishing season and more opportunities to catch fish that are usually not in our waters, like burbot,” Ben Dickinson, a biologist with the DNR, said in a news release.

Burbot are found in parts of Canada and the northern United States, and in parts of Europe. They spend most of their time at depths of nearly 700 feet.

They’re prized as table fare because their flesh cooks up firm and white.

The all-tackle world record for burbot stands at 25 pounds, 2 ounces. That fish was caught in March 2010 at Lake Diefenbaker in Saskatchewan, Canada.

WATCH: Indiana guard ejected for dirty elbow on Max Klesmit after torrid stretch

WATCH: Indiana guard ejected for dirty elbow on Max Klesmit after torrid stretch

Max Klesmit is playing out of his mind again. The veteran guard went on another white-hot stretch tonight against Indiana. Midway through the second half, he’s now up to 23 points on 7/9 shooting and 5/6 from three.

At first, the three-pointers were shades of Kyle Korver shooting over defenders. Then the ensuing dribble moves and crafty passes looked more like Klay Thompson during one of his hot performances. It’s become a true breakout month for the Wisconsin guard.

Klesmit’s dominance in the second half tonight was enough that upon returning to the offensive side of the court, Indiana guard C.J. Gunn threw a dirty elbow while the ball was being walked up the court.

The play was reviewed and Gunn was ejected with a flagrant 2. As many pointed out, he couldn’t guard Klesmit for the last 10 minutes so instead resorted to cheap shots.

Klesmit’s run in essence closed out the game after Indiana had cut the Badgers’ deficit to seven. Wisconsin went on an 18-2 run with the guard’s hot streak, and are currently in position to come away with their sixth conference win of the season.

How to watch Wisconsin basketball vs Indiana

How to watch Wisconsin basketball vs Indiana

Wisconsin basketball needs a bounce-back performance after its six-game win streak was snapped on the road at Penn State earlier this week.

The Badgers still sit at 13-4 on the season and atop the conference with a 5-1 record. But the loss pushed the team back toward the pack and allowed 5-2 Purdue to inch within 0.5 games.

Tonight, a win is necessary for Greg Gard’s team as it welcomes in 12-6 (4-3 Big Ten) Indiana. With the game back home at the Kohl Center and the Hoosiers currently ranked No. 94 in KenPom, signs point towards a bounce-back performance.

But, it is the Big Ten. We’ve seen more surprising results as recently as earlier this week when the Badgers lost to Penn State.

Here is how to watch tonight’s contest between Wisconsin and Indiana:

  • Time: 8:30 p.m. ET, 7:30 p.m. CT

Alabama football set to hire South Alabama HC Kane Wommack as DC

Alabama in contract negotiations with South Alabama HC Kane Wommack for DC role

[autotag]Kalen DeBoer[/autotag] was introduced as the head of the Alabama Crimson Tide Friday evening, but I doubt he has slept a second since then. From retaining players on the current roster to building out his staff, replacing Nick Saban is a ton of work. Despite all of the tasks at hand, DeBoer has been sensational so far.

Getting DeBoer was a massive win for the Tide, but then to find out Ryan Grubb and the entire staff were coming along too was just a dream come true. The Huskies were responsible for the most potent passing attack in the country in 2023 and are a wide receiver’s dream system.

As for the defensive coordinator, that has been a bit more up in the air. The early reports indicated that the Tide were trying to go get Travaris Robinson back from Georgia as the defensive coordinator, but ultimately he remained in Athens.

However, it sounds like DeBoer is getting the guy he wanted all along as Alabama is working out a deal with South Alabama head coach [autotag]Kane Wommack[/autotag] to take over as the defensive coordinator. The fact that Wommack has head coaching experience is a massive win for DeBoer, but he’s also an outstanding recruiter. DeBoer and Wommack served on the 2019 Indiana staff together so they should mesh quite seamlessly.

It is remarkable how quickly the staff has filled out, and especially how talented it is. DeBoer is doing everything he can and then some to keep the dynasty rolling!

Notre Dame left out of Twitter user’s Big Brother-Little Brother chart

Should the Irish have been on this chart?

Notre Dame’s independence is a major part of what makes it unique. The drawback to that is except for USC, Navy and Stanford, no annual rivalries are played. That means none within the state of Indiana. Perhaps it was for that reason that the Irish were left out of Twitter college list aficionado Big Game Boomer’s chart listing the “Big Brother” program and “Little Brother” program in all 50 states, if applicable:

The Irish and Boilermakers will play each other five consecutive years between 2024 and 2028. They have a home-and-home scheduled with the Hoosiers in 2030 and 2031. However, neither program is facing each other this year, which possibly factored into the Irish being snubbed. Bur perhaps the biggest factor is that the Irish aren’t conference rivals with either program.

If the Irish join the Big Ten in the future for whatever reason, perhaps we can revisit this list. Until then, that appears out of the question. Oh well. At least the Irish are supposed to have a better year than both programs.

Former Wisconsin starting offensive lineman commits to Indiana

Former starting Wisconsin offensive lineman commits to Indiana

Versatile Wisconsin offensive lineman Trey Wedig entered the transfer portal a few weeks ago. After a brief stay, the now-former Badger has committed to Indiana.

Wedig will be reunited with former Wisconsin OL coach Bob Bostad at IU as the program undergoes a facelift under new head coach Curt Cignetti.

The former Badger played four seasons in Madison. He started eight games for the Badgers in 2022, five coming at right tackle, two at right guard and one at left guard. He then appeared in 10 games this season, logging more than 250 snaps as the team’s versatile sixth offensive lineman.

With consistent playing time in question entering 2024, Wedig is off to an opportunity at Indiana that should see him start immediately.
