GM Scott Fitterer: Panthers had 3 ‘really good offers’ for 6th overall pick

On Monday, Panthers GM Scott Fitterer said the team had three “really good offers” for their sixth overall pick before two particular defenders were snatched off the board.

New Carolina Panthers offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu seems pretty happy that he’s staying home in Charlotte. And he may have the Houston Texans and New York Jets, in part, to thank for that.

General manager Scott Fitterer, the famed draft-pick merchant himself, was featured on Monday’s episode of Movin’ the Chains on SiriusXM NFL Radio. When covering what went down this past weekend, particularly about how he and the team landed on Ekwonu, he told hosts Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller that the chance to wheel and deal with the sixth overall pick was very much alive.

That prospect died, however, when a pair of cornerbacks were scooped up before the Panthers hit the clock.

Those corners, of course, were Derek Stingley Jr. of Louisiana State University and Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner of the University of Cincinnati. After the draft started with a pair of pass rushers in Travon Walker and Aidan Hutchinson, Stingley Jr. and Garnder went third and fourth overall—respectively—to the Texans and Jets.

Two picks later, Carolina took their guy Ickey and him the first offensive player to have his name called on Thursday night. So even though Fitterer might’ve had that itch to trade down, it was probably scratched by the fact that they may have finally gotten their franchise left tackle.

How athletic is the Panthers’ 2022 draft class?

With help from the tireless and phenomenal work of @MathBomb, let’s take a look at how athletic the Panthers’ 2022 draft class really is.

When Matt Rhule began his tenure as Carolina Panthers head coach, he and owner David Tepper vowed to place a premium on athletic testing. And save for using his first ever draft pick on a 326-pound nose tackle who isn’t particularly athletic, he’s pretty much stuck to that approach.

This weekend was the latest testament to that, as the braintrust collected yet another crop of high-end physical specimens. So, based off Kent Lee Platte’s Relative Athletic Score (RAS) metric, let’s see how the Panthers’ 2022 draft class measures up.

Poll: Give us your grade for the Panthers’ 2022 draft class

WR Robby Anderson approves of the Panthers’ 2022 draft class. Do you?

Two weeks ago, Carolina Panthers receiver Robby Anderson made it extremely clear that he did not want Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield on his team. So considering said team just traded up to select a quarterback this weekend, it’s no surprise that he approves of the job they did in the 2022 NFL draft.

Three days’ worth of prospecting has given the Panthers six exciting, well, prospects. Whether they’ll be expected to make an impact right away, marinate a bit on the chart or provide some much needed depth on a growing roster—the following group of players has many folks feeling pretty good about Carolina’s progress moving forward.

  • No. 6 (First round): Ikem Ekwonu, OT, NC State
  • No. 94 overall (Third round): Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss
  • No. 120 overall (Fourth round): Brandon Smith, LB, Penn State
  • No. 189 overall (Sixth round): Amaré Barno, DE, Virginia Tech
  • No. 199 overall (Sixth round): Cade Mays, OL, Tennessee
  • No. 242 overall (Seventh round): Kalon Barnes, CB, Baylor

So, are you one of those optimistic folks? Let us know how you feel below!

Panthers OT (and fan) Ikem Ekwonu was in attendance for 2016 NFC title game

Ikem Ekwonu not only grew up a Panthers fan, but also owned a Thomas Davis jersey and was at Bank of America Stadium for the team’s 2016 NFC Championship victory.

Carolina Panthers first-round draft pick Ikem Ekwonu doesn’t need to be told to “Keep Pounding.” He’s always done it.

On Thursday night, shortly after being selected with the sixth overall pick of the 2022 NFL draft, Ekwonu chatted with team media for the first time in his professional career. The Charlotte native and local Providence Day School and North Carolina State University product caught up on his roots, telling reporters that he’s been a fan of the franchise for quite some time.

“I actually had a Thomas Davis jersey growing up. And I actually met Thomas Davis this morning as well, so it’s kinda crazy how things line up,” he said. “I was at the NFC Championship game when they beat the Cardinals. I was right in the end zone. I’ve been to a couple games, I’ve been able to see the ups and downs of the team. And I’m just so fortunate to have the opportunity to have such an impact on the team’s legacy.”

That game saw the Panthers thump the visiting Arizona Cardinals, 49-15, back on Jan, 25, 2016 en route to their second ever Super Bowl appearance. And although that Carolina squad did not ultimately make the best out of that appearance, Ekwonu is sure he’ll try his damndest to help them get back there to finally complete the job.

“My biggest goal, obviously, is to win a Super Bowl ring, being a champion,” he said at the press conference table in Las Vegas. “I feel like that’s the pinnacle of the NFL and that’s a goal I wanna reach as well.”

Speaking of reaching—if Ickey’s seat was in the west end zone that night, maybe he could’ve reached out to help this dude . . .

What experts are saying about the Panthers’ selection of Ikem Ekwonu

How did the draft experts grade the Panthers’ first-round selection of OT Ikem Ekwonu?

The Carolina Panthers certainly thought they aced their first-round pick of offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu on Thursday night. But do the experts agree?

Here’s how the team’s sixth overall selection graded out amongst some of the sport’s critics.

Ikem Ekwonu was the ‘best-case scenario’ for Panthers

The Panthers were just as surprised as the rest of us when they had their choice of Ikem Ekwonu, Evan Neal or Charles Cross at the sixth overall pick.

The doomsday scenario for the Carolina Panthers was very much in play on Thursday night. That prospect would’ve seen each of the 2022 draft’s top three offensive linemen—Ikem Ekwonu, Evan Neal and Charles Cross—off the board by the time the sixth overall pick hit the clock.

But, it didn’t happen that way. In fact, the exact opposite happened, and the Panthers couldn’t believe it.

General manager Scott Fitterer spoke to team media shortly after their pleasantly stunning selection of Ekwonu, and said everything rolled the right way.

“I was actually very surprised that all three tackles were there,” Fitterer said. “We started to hear that four defenders may go first—1, 2, 3, 4. But in this situation, this is the best-case scenario for us. I can’t say a couple days ago, we’d ever thought this would happen.”

The Panthers’ pick was preceded by five defenders, in fact—Travon Walker to Jacksonville, Aidan Hutchinson to Detroit, Derek Stingley Jr. to Houston, Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner to the New York Jets and Kayvon Thibodeaux to the New York Giants. And it was that last choice, with the Oregon pass rusher going to Big Blue, that really gave Carolina their pick of the lot.

“We were pleasantly surprised as it went,” Fitterer added. “The Giants—we didn’t know what they were gonna do. In that situation, with all three [offensive linemen] on the board, we thought they could go a pass rusher at that point and not tackle and still get their guy at 7, one of the three at 7. Overall, we were very excited and we can’t wait to get this guy here.”

Head coach Matt Rhule was, obviously, extremely pleased as well. He praised Ekwonu, with his massive on-field talents aside, for his overall presence as a human being.

“I think when he came in the building, it was like a bolt of energy,” Rhule said of Ekwonu’s visit prior to the draft. “Just really a special person to go along with his physical style of play.”

Luckily for Rhule, Fitterer and the Panthers, that certainly won’t be the last time the electric Ekwonu enters that building.

Panthers fans react to selection of OT Ikem Ekwonu

Panthers fans were elated to see one of their own in Ikem Ekwonu get brought back home to Charlotte on Thursday night.

It might be safe to say Carolina Panthers fans were pretty happy with their team’s selection of offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu in the first round of the 2022 draft.

And if you don’t believe it, check out all the excitement from Thursday night for yourself.

Panthers may finally have their franchise LT in Ikem Ekwonu

What do the Panthers have in NC State OT Ikem “Ickey” Ekwonu? Hopefully, and most likely, a franchise left tackle that they haven’t had for almost a decade.

Following the retirement of Jordan Gross in 2014, the Carolina Panthers tried, tried and tried again at replacing him on the blindside. Actually, we may have to add another “tried” or two (or 13) to that last sentence.

Over those eight seasons, the franchise mustered up 16 different men to start at left tackle—perhaps the second-most important position in the sport. So, care for a trip down memory lane . . . ?

The list stacked up quickly in that time—Byron Bell, David Foucault, Michael Oher, Mike Remmers, Matt Kalil, Taylor Moton, Chris Clark, Marshall Newhouse, Daryl Williams, Greg Little, Dennis Daley, Russell Okung, Trent Scott, Michael Schofield, Cameron Erving and Brady Christensen.

But now, that list may stop for a while with Ikem “Ickey” Ekwonu.

On Thursday night, the Panthers selected Ekwonu with the sixth overall pick of the 2022 NFL draft. And what they now have, besides one heck of a surprise considering he probably shouldn’t have lasted that long, is that left tackle of the future.

What the Charlotte native and local University of North Carolina State product brings, at least from the jump, is all the right makeup. During his three years in Raleigh, he was routinely commended for his leadership abilities, his football intelligence, his academic ventures and—perhaps most appealingly to the game itself—his nasty and violent demeanor on the field.

He’s got it physically as well. Ekwonu measured up in Indianapolis at 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds along with an 84 1/4-inch wingspan. (That good enough for ya, Matt Rhule?)

Those physical attributes, obviously, did him justice at the collegiate level. Ickey exhibited eye-opening power, quickness, flexibility and agility on the Wolfpack front—with his premier strength coming as an elite run blocker.

The lone knock on his game, if you can really call it such, is that he isn’t the most polished pass protector this draft class had to offer. He has to improve on honing in his tenacity, hand placement and footwork at the next level—where his athleticism won’t make up for mistakes like it did in college.

Now, could that come back to bite the Panthers—who let two better technicians go in Alabama’s Evan Neal and Mississippi State’s Charles Cross? To put it simply, that’s highly unlikely.

At worst, Ekwonu is a top-end talent as a guard. Even if he doesn’t develop as a worthy blocker off the edge—which, again, is not a distinct possibility given his tools both physically and mentally—Carolina has itself an All-Pro caliber presence on its interior for years to come.

Such a scenario could see the Panthers go with Christensen as the left tackle and Ekwonu at left guard along with center Bradley Bozeman, right guard Austin Corbett and right tackle Taylor Moton. Not too shabby, huh?

The ultimate goal, however, is to get the Ick to stick as the pillar on the blindside. And we don’t know about you, but we’re not betting against that.

Watch Ikem Ekwonu get his draft call from the Panthers

There’s no doubt that new Panthers OT Ikem Ekwonu was happy to pick up his phone on Thursday night for that 704 area code.

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule had himself a ball on the horn last year with his 2021 draft picks. Well, he was at it again tonight.

The cameras were back in the war room on Thursday for the team’s selection of University of North Carolina State offensive lineman Ikem “Ickey” Ekwonu. A Charlotte native and a Panthers fans from youth, Ekwonu was audibly overjoyed in being announced as 2022’s sixth overall selection.

Oh, and so were Rhule, owner David Tepper and general manager Scott Fitterer . . .

As Fitterer told Ekwonu, there was reasonable doubt (wink, wink) the 6-foot-4, 310-pound bruiser would even last to Carolina. But, the dominoes fell in the right order.

The Jacksonville Jaguars went with Travon Walker. The Detroit Lions went with Aidan Hutchinson. The Houston Texans went with Derek Stingley Jr. The New York Jets went with Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner. Then the New York Giants went with Kayvon Thibodeaux.

That, surprinsingly, left the Panthers with their choice of the class’ top three hog mollies. And their choice was definitely happy to pick up his phone for that 704 area code.
