Jay Jones decommits from Tennessee

Tennessee Vols’ football recruiting news.

Just hours after 4-star tight end Hudson Wolfe announced his decommitment from Tennessee, 3-star safety Jay Jones from Demopolis, Alabama also renounced his commitment to the Vols.

Jones is 6-foot-1, 200 pound prospect that the 247Sports Composite rates as the No. 79 safety in the country and the No. 36 player in Alabama.

Defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley is still listed as his primary recruiter.

Jones also has offers from Ole Miss, Arkansas and South Alabama.

Tennessee’s recruiting class is now down to 23 prospects, and ranks as the No. 14 class in the country.

Along with Jones, the Vols have lost commitments from 5-star linebacker Terrence Lewis, 4-star defensive back Damarius McGhee and 4-star tight end Hudson Wolfe in the last two weeks.

The early signing period takes place Dec. 16-18 for the 2021 recruiting class. National signing day is Feb. 3.

Hudson Wolfe decommits from Tennessee

Tennessee Vols’ football recruiting news.

Tennessee suffered a decommitment Thursday for its 2021 recruiting class.

4-star tight end Hudson Wolfe announced his decommitment from the Vols on Twitter.

“While playing college football has always been a goal, 5 years ago I could have never imagined what the recruiting process is like,” Wolfe said. “It has been a privilege to go through that process.

“Over the last 2 years, the UT coaches have been great, specially Coach Pruitt, Coach Os, and most recently Coach Fulmer. I’m grateful for the time spent with them. That’s what makes this a difficult decision. After countless hours of careful deliberation, I have decided to decommit from UT.”

Wolfe committed to Tennessee in June. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound 2021 prospect is from Hardin County High School in Savannah, Tennessee.

The Vols have lost commitments from 5-star linebacker Terrence Lewis, 4-star cornerback Damarius McGhee, 3-star defensive lineman Darrell Jackson and Wolfe in the past two weeks.

The early signing period takes place Dec. 16-18 for the 2021 recruiting class. National signing day is Feb. 3.

Tennessee tight end commit has season-ending surgery

This was a tough blow for the talented product out of Hardin County High School.

A 2021 Tennessee commitment received a tough blow on Tuesday, as Hardin County tight end Hudson Wolfe announced he would undergo back surgery and prematurely end his senior season in high school football.

“Today I am having a microdiscectomy,” Wolfe said on Twitter.

“I’m working with a great team of doctors, and they have advised me that surgery is my only option to be back 100%,” Wolfe continued. “I will be back in no time! When I wake up from surgery, my FOCUS and #1 PRIORITY is to have the mentality of a professional as I rehab.

“I’m more COMITTED and more DETERMINED than ever to do what I need to do to accomplish my GOALS!”

Wolfe is a 6-foot-6, 240-pound tight end that is rated as a 4-star by the 247Sports Composite. Wolfe is also rated the No. 8 tight end in his class and No. 5 player in the state of Tennessee.

He caught nine touchdown passes in his junior year for the Hardin County Tigers in Savannah, Tennessee.

In-state 4-star TE commits to Tennessee

Tennessee’s 2021 recruiting class received another boost on Monday, as 4-star tight end Hudson Wolfe announced his commitment to the Vols on his Twitter account.

Wolfe is a West Tennessee product, from Hardin County High School in Savannah, Tennessee. At 6-foot-6, 240-pounds, Wolfe caught nine touchdown passes in 2019, but truly made his mark as a blocker. With his size, it is not inconceivable that Wolfe could transition to the offensive line, but his catch radius could make it difficult to move him from tight end. The 247Sports Composite rates Wolfe as a 4-star prospect, the No. 8 tight end in his class, and the No. 5 player in Tennessee.

Wolfe was heavily pursued by a large number of Power 5 programs, including Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Florida. Offensive line coach Will Friend and tight ends coach Joe Osovet led the way for Tennessee in Wolfe’s recruitment.

The commitment takes Tennessee back to the No. 2 spot in the national 247Sports team rankings for 2021, behind only Ohio State. Wolfe also gives Tennessee another big in-state prospect, joining wide receiver Walker Merrill and running back Elijah Howard as the only players from the Volunteer State in the class.

Ohio State 2021 tight end target Hudson Wolfe commits to Tennessee

Four-star 2021 tight end Hudson Wolfe chose Tennessee over Ohio State and others on Monday.

Ohio State has lost two of its main priority targets in the last four days. First, it was five-star offensive lineman J.C. Latham committing to Alabama, followed by Monday’s news that four-star tight end Hudson Wolfe has given his verbal pledge to Tennessee.

Wolfe made the announcement live on Rivals and continued the hot recruiting for head coach and Jeremy Pruitt and the Volunteers. It gives Tennessee the class of 2021’s No. 9 tight end overall according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

He chose UT over Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, and Ole Miss.

What might be more concerning is the fact that the recruiting momentum Ryan Day and staff had through the months of March and April has cooled off a bit. It’s still one whale of a class no matter what happens, but it would be nice to get some positive vibes going again.

At this point, despite looking like a real possibility of signing the best recruiting class in the modern era, it would be stretch now. It’s not out of the question, but there’s a lot that will have to go right from here through the remainder of the cycle for that to occur.

Tennessee included in top 5 for tight end Hudson Wolfe

Tennessee included in top 5 for tight end Hudson Wolfe.

Tennessee is in the running to land a highly touted in-state prospect: tight end Hudson Wolfe. The Hardin County High School product posted his top five on his Twitter account over the weekend.

The Vols join Ohio State, Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama in the final five programs.

Wolfe is one of the top 2021 prospects in the state, standing 6 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing 245 pounds. The 247Sports Composite rates Wolfe as a four-star prospect, the No. 9 tight end in his class and the No. 5 overall player in Tennessee.

The tight end position has not brought a lot of pass-catching production for Tennessee since Jeremy Pruitt was hired. Former top JUCO prospect Dominick Wood-Anderson is moving on to the NFL draft after two seasons with the program, and the 2020 season will be a chance to break in some unproven talent in the tight ends room for the Vols.

Wolf is a priority for Tennessee, and the Vols hope to take his recruitment down to the wire while competing with top programs around the country. Brian Niedermeyer is Wolfe’s primary recruiter, despite having made the switch from tight ends coach to overseeing inside linebackers in the offseason.

Niedermeyer is one of Tennessee’s best recruiters and a former 247Sports National Recruiter of the Year.

Tennessee visits highly-touted in-state tight end

Tennessee visits highly-touted in-state tight end.

Tennessee was one of many schools to pay a visit to 2021 Hardin County tight end Hudson Wolfe on Thursday, sending offensive line coach Will Friend as the Vols compete with several major programs to secure the signature of the talented product out of Savannah.

Wolfe is a 6-foot-6, 235-pound tight end rated as a 4-star and No. 8 overall at his position on the 247Sports Composite in the 2021 class. His junior season saw him haul in 25 passes for 381 yards and nine touchdowns.

Wolfe can make an impact in the receiving game, but has really impressed recruiters with his blocking ability. His frame of work last season helped the Hardin County Tigers to an 11-win campaign that ended with a loss to Springfield High School in the quarterfinal round of the 4A playoffs, despite Wolfe missing the second playoff game due to a suspension.

Wolfe is teammates with running back BB Bumphus, the younger cousin of Tennessee defensive end and former Hardin County Tiger Latrell Bumphus.

Hardin County hosted Florida, Ohio State and Ole Miss, as well as Tennessee on Thursday, so the Vols have their work cut out for them in securing Wolfe.
