Red Flag Part II: Examining the second week of Texas’ fall camp

Let’s distinguish red flags from common training camp news.

Texas had a tough week on the practice field in their second week. An injury-filled scrimmage capped a rough news week.

Very few players could qualify as indispensable, but Isaiah Neyor and Junior Angilau have a strong case for that distinction.

For Angilau, the long-time starter’s experience and leadership is difficult to replace. Angilau has been said to be vocal and demanding of his fellow teammates. Moving peer accountability from the field to the sideline is suboptimal for Texas.

Along those lines, Roschon Johnson is expected to be out with a shorter-term injury.

The above news does not necessarily change Texas’ ceiling, but it does make it more difficult to achieve their goals this season.

Let’s distinguish red flags from common training camp news.

How Hudson Card could succeed in Texas’ offense

Hudson’s consistent accuracy on short and intermediate throws could help Texas sustain drives.

Hudson Card is in the thick of the Texas quarterback battle. As we near a quarterback decision, it’s entirely possible Card will win the starting job.

Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card have different skills. While we have detailed Ewers’ traits, Card has gone under the radar for much of the offseason.

The third-year quarterback from Lake Travis possesses skills that could lead to success. Perhaps his best throwing trait is the ability to thread the needle in the middle of the field on intermediate throws.

Last season, Card hit Bijan Robinson on a skinny post in traffic in the opener against Louisiana. In the spring, Hudson found Ja’Tavion Sanders on a similar play.

While Card will likely struggle to complete the deep ball under duress, he could soften defenses in the intermediate passing game to Ja’Tavion Sanders down the seam.

Hudson’s consistent accuracy on short and intermediate throws could help Texas sustain drives.

How did Big 12 quarterbacks stack up in Athlon Sports 1-131 rankings for 2022?

Where did Dillon Gabriel and the rest of the Big 12 land on Athlon Sports’ 1-131 quarterback rankings for the 2022 season?

Football is the ultimate team sport. It takes 11 guys on offense and 11 on defense to make a team successful. All of that is true, yet, the quarterback position can be the biggest difference in a win or loss than any other position on the field.

A different pressure comes with playing the highest-profile position in sports. Over the last year, the Oklahoma Sooners have seen a lot of movement at quarterback and still remain in a great spot to have one of the best quarterbacks in the Big 12.

That’s why they continue to reign as “QBU,” according to ESPN. The commitment of Nick Evers quickly after Jeff Lebby arrived, the addition of Dillon Gabriel shortly after Caleb Williams entered the portal, and the commitment of Jackson Arnold back in January for 2023 all support the idea that Oklahoma will continue to recruit and produce high-level quarterback play.

Athlon Sports recently ranked the quarterback position 1-131. Notable former Sooners on the list were [autotag]Tanner Mordecai[/autotag] at No. 26, [autotag]Spencer Rattler[/autotag] at No. 14, and [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] at No. 3.

Let’s take a look at how [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] stacked up with the rest of the Big 12.

Five offseason statements made by Steve Sarkisian that inspire confidence

These quotes tell you Steve Sarkisian is making changes.

Press conferences are often not very insightful for most football teams. The opposite is true with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.

Sarkisian is usually contemplative and genuine in his response to questions asked by Texas media. Out of those responses, one can gather what the second-year head coach is hinting at heading into the 2022 season.

There is not tangible proof that Texas is going through a philosophical overhaul on defense, but one can gather from his offseason statements that change is on its way.

The great offensive mind has discussed various changes in defensive mentality all offseason, but recent quotes say a great deal about the core values of his defense.

As for the offense, Sarkisian detailed on how position battles can be won. Here are a few quotes that inspire trust heading into the first month of football.

Texas’ quarterback competition is going as planned

Sarkisian could have his quarterback selected in the next two weeks.

The battle for the starting quarterback job is underway in Austin. Competition is bringing out the best in each quarterback.

In the minimal footage we have seen, both quarterbacks have been accurate. Nevertheless, one throwing motion caught my eye.

Texas fans are familiar with Hudson Card’s strong skills and passing ability, but recently saw Quinn Ewers’ arm talent on full display. Watching the Southlake Carroll gunslinger passing the ball in Texas practice gear makes it easier to visualize Ewers leading the Longhorns into a real game.

Maalik Murphy is certainly a player who could factor into Texas’ long-term plans at quarterback as well.

Despite last year’s inconsistency at quarterback, there is confidence Steve Sarkisian will make the best quarterback decision for this team.

Now that he is more knowledgeable of his personnel than last season, it could be easier to determine the right quarterback fit.

In my opinion, Sarkisian could have his quarterback selected in the next two weeks.

WATCH: Texas QB Quinn Ewers arrives for training camp

Here is a look at Ewers arriving for his first fall camp as a Longhorn.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff made major headlines this offseason in their efforts to boost the talent on the Texas roster.

The Longhorns used both the 2022 recruiting cycle and the transfer portal to their advantage, creating some real momentum heading into the 2022 season. Perhaps the biggest fish Texas landed is former five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers.

The Ohio State transfer is back in the state of Texas after spending his redshirt freshman season in Columbus, and Texas faithful could not be more excited. He is one of two quarterback to earn a perfect 1.0000 prospect rating out of high school. The other was Longhorn legend Vince Young.

Ewers enters fall camp in a quarterback battle with redshirt sophomore Hudson Card who had an up-and-down 2021 season.

Quinn’s exceptional arm talent makes him a great fit for Sarkisian’s attacking style of offense. Here is a look at Ewers arriving for his first fall camp as a Longhorn.

What Texas football coaches will look for in August

Texas coaches have plenty to work on in the longest month of the year.

The longest month of the college football offseason is upon us. And while fans would like to fast forward, Texas football coaches will have plenty of goals they need to accomplish in camp.

The 2021 roster had a handful of talented contributors, but multiple flaws. The offensive line struggled from the opening series to late into the season. On defense, Texas struggled to tackle, cover, and get to the quarterback. In addition, they displayed poor pursuit angles and unreliable assignment integrity.

The 2022 roster will have to guard against some of the same issues. Often, the past year’s issues show up in the first two games of the next season. Steve Sarkisian’s staff will aim to eliminate as many of last year’s mistakes prior to the Week 2 bout with Alabama.

Let’s look at what Texas coaches will determine as we move into August on Monday.

Decisiveness could determine the Texas quarterback battle

Confidence is perhaps the greatest predictor of success for quarterbacks.

Hudson Card and Quinn Ewers will battle for the starting quarterback position at Texas. And barring erratic play from either of the two, the more decisive quarterback should prevail.

Card possesses immense talent. The No. 2 dual-threat quarterback from the 2020 recruiting class has a good arm and solid speed. While the measurable traits are present, the Lake Travis product has yet to take hold of the starting position.

Ewers comes in with many strong tangible and intangible qualities, but lacks the game experience for us to definitively project how he will perform.

One of the quarterbacks will face the toughest second-game test imaginable.

Texas will play against an Alabama defense with Will Anderson and Dallas Turner terrorizing an already fragile pass protection. Steve Sarkisian will need the quarterback to make good decisions as quickly as possible.

The decisive quarterback in that scenario figures to win out.
