Texas mentioned among the 10 hottest quarterback battles in the country

Is Quinn Ewers a lock to for the starting job, or will Hudson Card win it for the second straight year?

The most popular and important position in football, quarterback, is a major headline again in Austin this offseason.

Similar to the 2021 season, Steve Sarkisian and Texas are hosting a very important quarterback battle. However, the stakes are much higher as the Longhorns badly need someone to lead them back out of the mud after their horrendous 5-7 season.

Hudson Card, who is currently receiving the most reps with the first team throughout the spring, has a slight advantage due to the fact this is his second year in Sarkisian’s offense.

Card won the job over now Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson prior to last season, but was quickly yanked in Texas’ Week 2 loss against Arkansas. He is looking to beat out former No. 1 overall recruit Quinn Ewers, who came to Texas via the transfer portal after spending what should have been his senior season of high school at Ohio State.

Sporting News released their 10 hottest quarterback battles ahead of the 2022 college football season, and even predicted who they think will come out victorious.

Card has played in 10 games the past two seasons for the Longhorns, and he made two starts in 2021. Ewers is a five-star redshirt freshman who spent last season with Ohio State in order to cash in on NIL deals. Card reportedly has looked better in spring practice, but the hype around Ewers is going to continue.

Their prediction as to who will win this competition is similar to many other experts, and seems to be who the fans are clamoring for.

Second-year coach Steve Sarkisian is going to have a tough choice. This battle likely will come down to the last week, but we still think Ewers will eventually take over the starting job.

If Ewers is to win the job, he will be the third quarterback in two years to attempt to hold on as the starting quarterback after the departure of Sam Ehlinger. He and Card will both have ample opportunities to win the job, and it is certain that most of the college football world will be tuned in to the spring game to see who outshines who.

Positive notes from Texas’ spring practice on Saturday

Some players are helping themselves get ahead during spring practices.

The Longhorns are grinding this offseason with the mindset that they need to take that next step on the field come fall when the season begins.

After an embarrassing 5-7 record in his first season as the head coach of Texas, Steve Sarkisian has his back against the wall as another down season with this very much improved roster would be catastrophic for the Longhorns.

On the bright side, there is a sense around the program that some of the players from Tom Herman’s team weren’t all the way bought into the culture, and the players the new coaching staff brought in seem to have the right attitudes.

Now the only question is whether the new players along with the returners can lead to major improvements, and we are starting to see some of these questions addressed during spring practices.

247Sports’ Hudson Standish (exclusive content) was able to chat with a few sources in attendance of Texas’ most recent scrimmage on Saturday. Let’s dissect a few of the positive notes from practice.

Rating Quinn Ewers chances to take over the starting job

On a scale of 1-10, where do you rank QE’s chances of winning the starting job?

Spring football is finally underway on the Forty Acres. After a disappointing 2021 campaign under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, we saw a mass exodus of talent.

Not only were players heading out via graduation and the transfer portal, but the Texas Longhorns also added a plethora of talent. The big three were quarterback Quinn Ewers (Ohio State), wide receiver Isaiah Neyor (Wyoming), and tight end Jahleel Billingsley (Alabama).

While there are plenty of talking points for this football team, it begins and ends with the quarterback position. This is a familiar spot for last season’s week one starter, Hudson Card. He battled it out with Casey Thompson after his breakout in the Valero Alamo Bowl against the Colorado Buffaloes. Thompson is now in Nebraska, while Ewers and Card start the quarterback battle.

What are the chances that Card can once again hold off the competition and stake his claim as QB1? One analyst doesn’t believe that will be the case.

We haven’t seen Quinn Ewers play since his junior year of high school. But we all still believe that he is the guy. The Ohio State transfer didn’t play for the Buckeyes after taking a huge NIL deal to skip his senior year and enroll early for the Buckeyes. But has there ever been more excitement for a Texas high school quarterback to be playing at home than Quinn Ewers? Steve Sarkisian has the reputation as one of the top developers of quarterback talent in the country. Everyone in Austin hopes that this will be a match made in heaven. Sophomore Hudson Card will do his best to try to win the job over Ewers. But it looks like the odds are stacked high in Ewers’ favor. – Carl Reed, 247Sports

This certainly has the feel of being Ewers’ job to lose. He will be afforded every opportunity to take the starting job from Card. I wouldn’t count out Hudson just yet, Sark could opt to go with the more experienced quarterback at the start of the 2022 season. As for now, we should just enjoy the competition and see who rises to the top.

Everything Steve Sarkisian said after Texas’ first spring practice

Sarkisian dropped some interesting nuggets after their first spring practice.

Spring football is back in session, and the Longhorns had their first practice on Tuesday.

This spring will be vital for the program, as there are position battles all over the field on both sides of the ball that are starting now, and it gives Steve Sarkisian a chance to continue to solidify his culture as the Texas head coach.

This past season did not meet the standards that Sarkisian had in mind, nor the lofty expectations that the Longhorn faithful always have. It was filled with mental lapses, blown leads, and from what has been commented on after the fact; a toxic environment created by players no longer with the program.

Even with all the struggles, fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic heading into 2022. Sarkisian and his staff were able to bring in the No. 5 recruiting class in the country along with bringing in a top 10 transfer class.

There is a growing expectation that these new faces will have an immediate impact, especially players like five-star linemen Kelvin Banks and Devon Campbell who will be joining the team in fall, and transfers Quinn Ewers and Isaiah Neyor.

With the Big 12 as up for grabs as it has been in the past decade or so, Texas may have a chance to bounce back from last year and compete for a conference title.

Sarkisian addressed the media after the first spring practice, and here are some of his more interesting comments.

Texas’ QB competition makes CBS Sports’ battles to watch during spring

“Even if Card somehow beats out Ewers, he will have an extremely short leash.”

New year, similar situation at the quarterback position for Steve Sarkisian and Texas.

When Sarkisian took the Texas job he knew that he would have to decide between Casey Thompson and Hudson Card for the starting role, but what he didn’t know was that both of them ended up being the wrong decision. Neither Thompson or Card were able to consistently produce in 2021, as Texas had a historically bad losing streak of six games and finished the season 5-7.

Since the last game against Kansas State, Thompson has since transferred to Nebraska in hopes of having a more clear path to being the starter, and former five-star and perfectly rated recruit Quinn Ewers transferred from Ohio State.

Ewers, who skipped his senior year of high school, will now have a legitimate chance to become the starter for the Longhorns and will be competing Card.

There are many intriguing quarterback battles across the country, but this one is one of the most interesting ones to keep an eye on. CBS Sports included it in their seven battles to follow during spring practice. Here are their thoughts on the intense position battle going on in Austin:

Last year, we were tracking the battle between Card and Casey Thompson, a competition that started in the spring and continued all the way into Steve Sarkisian’s first season as the Longhorns’ head coach. Thompson transferred to Nebraska, but Card is far from the frontrunner for this job thanks to the arrival of former five-star prospect Quinn Ewers from Ohio State. The 6-foot-3, 206-pound Ewers rated as the No. 1 high school recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite, and that blue-chip status has many fans handing him the honors of QB1 already. But Card has indicated he’s up for the challenge of going head-to-head against the touted new arrival and his one year of experience in Sarkisian’s offense could prove to be valuable in the competition.

Card will have to put on a performance of a lifetime in order to fend off Ewers and win the starting job, as it really seems as if it is Ewers’ job to lose. It is also fair to assume that even if Card somehow beats out Ewers, he will have an extremely short leash like he did last season, in order to give way to Ewers.

Texas QB Quinn Ewers is putting in work during spring break

No team work outs? No problem for Quinn Ewers.

The pressure on quarterback Quinn Ewers was always going to be high due to his perfect rating as a high school senior, but now that he is a Longhorn it is likely even higher.

He not only has to fend off Hudson Card for the starting role, but assuming he is able to do so, he will be the next quarterback tasked with attempting to bring Texas back to national relevancy.

On top of this, the Longhorns need a big season out of their quarterback whether it be Card or Ewers just to help get the Steve Sarkisian era headed in the right direction after going 5-7 in his first season as the head coach.

Ewers seems to be working extremely hard towards winning the starting job, and was even spotted throwing passes during Texas’ spring break in order to help prepare for his crucial spring position battle with Card.

If Ewers can live up to the hype he accumulated as a high school recruit, the Longhorns may finally have a chance to be relevant on a national scale.
