Drew Brees led the New Orleans Saints pregame huddle for 15 years, but it’s time for someone else to step up into that vocal leadership role. And that someone is Demario Davis — the former All-Pro linebacker who filled in for Brees in recent years when he’s been sidelined by injuries.

That’s just what Davis did before Monday’s preseason game with the Jacksonville Jaguars, shouting to set the tone and get his teammates ready for kickoff. But he wasn’t alone, with Jameis Winston leaning in for an ad-lib here or there.

Afterwards, Davis and Winston went out for the opening kickoff shoulder-to-shoulder with Cameron Jordan and Malcolm Jenkins. And they won the toss, electing to receive the opening kickoff in front of an excited home crowd. It’s on.

The New Orleans Saints gathered for their usual pregame huddle, as always led by defensive captain Demario Davis. But for the first time in a month they were joined by Drew Brees, making his return after four weeks on the injured reserve list. And Davis took time to celebrate the occasion.

“This is war time, and we are war ready,” Davis shouted from among their teammates. “And guess what? We’ve got our general with us.”

It’s the biggest game of the year for the Saints, matching them up with the Super Bowl-champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15. Davis and Brees will both need to be on top of their game to lead their squad to victory against one of the best offenses in recent memory.

Saints pregame huddle, Week 9: Demario Davis and Drew Brees set the tone

New Orleans Saints captains Demario Davis and Drew Brees gathered their teammates for a weekly pregame huddle before kickoff with Tampa Bay.

The New Orleans Saints have rattled off four victories in a row, so they aren’t changing anything up any time soon as far as their pregame rituals are concerned. That includes a characteristically fiery speech from linebacker Demario Davis and quarterback Drew Brees, both team captains, in the final minutes before kickoff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But there’s a new face in the middle of the team huddle: wide receiver Michael Thomas, eyes locked in an intently nodding along with the cadence from Davis and Brees. Thomas hasn’t suited up for a game since exiting Week 1’s win over the Buccaneers, so he’s appropriately laser-focused on helping his team pull off the upset.

They certainly won’t be lacking for motivation. Beyond the sort of leadership Davis and Brees put on display here, the Saints can become the first division rival to ever sweep Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady with a win. Here’s hoping they can carry this energy over into the game,

Flashback Friday: 2016 Drew Brees pregame speech from his dramatic return to San Diego

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees delivered a pregame speech before his dramatic 2016 game against the then-San Diego chargers.

When Drew Brees last played against his former team back in 2016, the Chargers were still in San Diego. And that game happened to be his first return to the West Coast since signing with the New Orleans Saints in 2006, adding an element of drama to it. And that’s not even considering the stakes: the Saints were 0-3 at the time, and desperate for a win before their bye week (sound familiar?). They were fresh off the heels of a blowout loss to the NFC South-rival Atlanta Falcons, who went on to blow a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI.

The Saints defense had allowed 400-plus yards in each of their first three games, but they came through in the clutch against the Chargers that day. After giving up 24 points in the first half, the Saints rallied to force three Chargers punts to open the second half, and they closed out the game with three consecutive takeaways.

Winning still wasn’t easy. Brees threw an interception (his second of the day) early in the fourth quarter that set the Chargers up to extend their 34-21 lead. New Orleans struggled to move the ball on the ground and through the air, with Mark Ingram leading the team in yards as both a runner (56) and receiver (49). It took a late-game Michael Thomas touchdown catch from 5 yards out to close the gap, and a goal-line scoring run from fullback John Kuhn to take a one-point lead.

But then the defense took over. Nick Fairley sacked Philip Rivers on first down from the San Diego 25, and Rivers fumbled on second down. Then he missed a deep shot on third down, and the Chargers were stuck on fourth-and-22 deep in their own territory with the game on the line. B.W. Webb (remember him?) intercepted Rivers’ final throw, and Brees kneeled as time expired to seal the 35-34 win.

It was exhilarating. But it wasn’t a sign of success to come just yet, as the Saints needed another mediocre 7-9 finish for Sean Payton to recognize that it was time for serious changes to his staff. Jeff Ireland was given more control of the team’s scouting process, and yielded the best draft class since Payton’s first year in town — bringing in talents like Alvin Kamara, Ryan Ramczyk, Marshon Lattimore, and Trey Hendrickson. The defensive coaching staff was rebuilt from the ground up, bringing in high-quality assistants like Ryan Nielsen and Mike Nolan.

And all of those changes worked. New Orleans went on to win 41 of their next 55 games, with three straight division titles. Maybe they can capture some of that magic from their last game with the Chargers on Monday night.

Watch: Demario Davis, Drew Brees fire up the Saints before kickoff vs. Vikings

New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis and quarterback Drew Brees addressed the team before their wild-card round game with the Vikings

The New Orleans Saints always hold a team huddle following pregame warmups, with team leaders Drew Brees and Demario Davis addressing the team to set the tone in the final minutes before kickoff. They kept that tradition running on Sunday, just ahead of their wild-card round game with the Minnesota Vikings.

It’s hard to not get pumped up listening to Brees and Davis fire up their teammates. They’ve found a great balance between the iconic “win again” cadence Brees introduced a decade ago in the run up to Super Bowl XLIV, and the “prowl, kill, eat” mantra Davis has made his signature. With leadership in place like this — respected voices who turn their words into actions, and lead by example — there’s no doubt that the Saints will follow them anywhere.
