Twitter reaction to Mike Brey announcing retirement

A Notre Dame all-time great!

After the way the 2022-23 season has gone for Notre Dame, it was hardly a surprise when news of Mike Brey’s impending retirement broke on Thursday night.  Notre Dame will play out the stretch for the year and be on the search for a new men’s basketball coach for the first time since the summer of 2000.

We’ll discuss potential replacements in the days and weeks to come but first we’ll look back at Brey’s incredible run at Notre Dame.  Brey won more games as Notre Dame’s head coach than anyone who previously held the post and led the Irish to back-to-back Elite 8 appearances in 2015 and 2016.

News broke of Brey’s plans to step away on Thursday night and understandably a lot of the Notre Dame and college basketball communities shared their reactions on social media.  Here are just a few of the best of those.

Notre Dame Izzowns No. 20 Michigan State, 70-52

The Irish Izzowned Sparty on Wednesday night

This is the same Notre Dame team that last time out fell to St. Bonaventure by a dozen, but welcome to college basketball.  Notre Dame closed out their portion of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge with a home drubbing of No. 20 Michigan State, 70-52 on Wednesday.  Cormac Ryan was a force for the Irish as he was 6 of 7 from beyond the arc leading all scorers with 23 points.

Behind Ryan’s huge first half where he scored 20 of those 23 points, Notre Dame burst out to a 42-24 lead at the break.  It was also an incredibly clean game by the Irish as they didn’t commit a turnover until 17 minutes into the contest.  JJ Starling added 14 points and Dane Goodwin scored 12 for Notre Dame.

The win moves Notre Dame to 6-1 on the year as the Irish get a preemptive start to their ACC season as they welcome 3-4 Syracuse to town this Saturday.  Michigan State falls to 5-3 on the year and is now just 2-2 over their last four.

Notre Dame’s win was the ACC’s eighth in this year’s challenge which clinched the conference bragging rights for good as the series is being done away starting next year.  ACC teams will instead challenge SEC opponents.

Coach K blasts NCAA ahead of Final Four

Do you agree?

Hey, did you hear?

[autotag]Mike Krzyzewski[/autotag], the famed head basketball coach at [autotag]Duke[/autotag] and the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history is coaching in the Final Four this weekend in his final season before retiring.  It could be a storybook tale if he were to win it all before riding into the sunset.

Now that you’re caught up with the news I’m sure you weren’t aware of, let’s take a moment to discuss Krzyzewski putting the NCAA on-blast Friday ahead of the Final Four.

Krzyzewski met the media ahead of Duke’s Final Four showdown with rival North Carolina and was asked about the current system in college basketball. Let’s just say that Coach K [listicle id=29455]sounded like a man that isn’t going to miss the business side of the job.

Notre Dame star freshman to test NBA waters

Smart move by Wesley?

Notre Dame landed one of their biggest recruits in recent years when South Bend’s very own [autotag]Blake Wesley[/autotag] chose to play basketball for the Fighting Irish and [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag].  Now Wesley is headed to the NBA draft after one season in college.

Brey did a guest appearance with the popular Mully and Haugh Show at 670 The Score in Chicago where he spilled the Wesley beans.

“I had a great meeting with his family last night, went over to the house in South Bend.” Brey stated. “He will test the waters but keep his eligibility and keep the option open to come back. So basically, you’re on a two month evaluation process because June 1 is the date he would have to return.”

I’ll never knock a kid on choosing to enter the professional ranks where they can earn a lot more money than they can in college with the name and image likeness deals.

Any reason for me to disagree would be for selfish reasons only and if Brey can get by those then I am just going to have to do the same.  That said, I do wonder how high Wesley’s stock could rise if he were to go the Jaden Ivey route and return for his sophomore year.

“If he does what I think he can do in these workouts and he’s a first-round lottery pick and chooses to go, I will lead the parade out of town!”

Brey would add that [autotag]Nate Laszewski[/autotag], who has a year of eligibility remaining, will do the same.

You can listen to the full interview on the Score webpage.  The conversation about Wesley comes at roughly 13:30.

Twitter reacts to Notre Dame’s NCAA Tournament loss to Texas Tech

Tough end to a heckuva turnaround season for the Irish…

Notre Dame had the lead and the ball with just over 1:30 left in Sunday night’s NCAA Tournament Second Round game with Texas Tech, ultimately falling 59-53 and seeing their season come to an end.  It’s frustrating in that the game was winnable and a sour way to close what was an impressive turnaround for a Fighting Irish squad that was just 4-5 after falling to Indiana on December 18.

Texas Tech now advances to take on Duke in the Sweet 16 after the Blue Devils got by Michigan State in the Second Round.

Notre Dame’s warm greeting at hotel after beating Alabama

Imagine being a tourist, not knowing the first thing about college basketball, and watching this in your hotel…

Technically Alabama was seeded higher and the oddsmakers made them the favorites but you can’t convince me that the better team didn’t win Friday’s first round NCAA Tournament game between the sixth seeded Crimson Tide and 11th seeded Notre Dame.

Upset or not, whatever you’d like to call it, Notre Dame survives to fight another day as they won to move to a Second Round date with third seeded Texas Tech on Sunday.  When you pull off a big win like the Irish did you’re bound to be celebrated in a big way, especially seeing as the Irish hadn’t been to an NCAA Tournament since 2017 entering this March.

Here’s hoping for an even better greeting after Sunday’s game.
