Twitter reaction to Mike Brey announcing retirement

A Notre Dame all-time great!

After the way the 2022-23 season has gone for Notre Dame, it was hardly a surprise when news of Mike Brey’s impending retirement broke on Thursday night.  Notre Dame will play out the stretch for the year and be on the search for a new men’s basketball coach for the first time since the summer of 2000.

We’ll discuss potential replacements in the days and weeks to come but first we’ll look back at Brey’s incredible run at Notre Dame.  Brey won more games as Notre Dame’s head coach than anyone who previously held the post and led the Irish to back-to-back Elite 8 appearances in 2015 and 2016.

News broke of Brey’s plans to step away on Thursday night and understandably a lot of the Notre Dame and college basketball communities shared their reactions on social media.  Here are just a few of the best of those.

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey after beating Rutgers

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Mike Brey has been coaching Notre Dame for a long time but few wins have been as memorable as the double-overtime thriller the Irish had over Rutgers on Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

Brey, who is seemingly always energetic, was beyond happy to talk after the game to reporters as the classic was recapped and where it falls in his all-time games at Notre Dame was discussed.

Below is everything Brey had to say during his press conference following the 89-87 victory.

Notre Dame-Pittsburgh betting information

What is your pick for Saturday afternoon’s regular season finale?

Notre Dame basketball hit a road bump on their likely journey to the NCAA Tournament earlier this week as the Irish fell in Tallahassee.  Up Saturday afternoon is the final home game for the Fighting Irish as they’ll take on a struggling Pitt squad.

Notre Dame is expected to win on senior day, but how big of a favorite are the Irish in the regular season finale?

Here are the odds provided by Tipico:

The line: Notre Dame -12.5
Moneylines: Notre Dame -900, Pitt +570
Total: 130.5

Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. ET in South Bend this afternoon.

Notre Dame knocking on door of latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll

Notre Dame received votes for the first time since the start of the year in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll this week.

After perhaps their most difficult week of the regular season that saw a makeup home game against Duke, a mid-week trip to Miami, and a Saturday contest at North Carolina State, Notre Dame managed a 2-1 mark over that time and showed all the signs of an ever-improving basketball team.

That didn’t get the Irish in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY’s top 25 this week, but it did get them in the receiving votes category which is a big step towards a possibile tournament bid.

Duke checked into the rankings at six while Miami was the only ACC team besides Notre Dame in the receiving votes category.

Watch: Mike Brey responds to chants calling for firing

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey had a rough Wednesday night as the student body chanted to fire him as the Irish exited the court.

In the 21 years Mike Brey has led the Notre Dame basketball program it’s tough to find a more difficult night than Wednesday was for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame dropped yet another ACC contest, this one an 8-69 decision to NC State as the Irish now sit just 9-14 overall and 6-11 in ACC play.

As the clock wound down and the teams exited the floor Wednesday night, Notre Dame students who were allowed to attend their first game this season were none too pleased with the result.

Video:

Brey handled it with class, accepting all of the blame and not running from the issue.

Does the program need a hard reset, or does Brey deserve another year?

2020 saw Notre Dame very much on the bubble when college athletics were shutdown and no NCAA Tournament was held.

It’s hard for me to sit and call for Brey’s job considering all he’s done for a basketball program that flailed in the wind, missing the NCAA Tournament ten-straight seasons before his arrival for the 2000-01 season.

The Irish haven’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2017 after making the tournament in nine of the previous 11 seasons under Brey.

Strange circumstances certainly don’t appear to have helped anything in Brey or Notre Dame’s case this winter and are worth noting, but at the very least this conversation has grown into something most Notre Dame fan’s never would have expected to ever dream of just a few short years ago.

Notre Dame Basketball Earns NABC Academic Honors For Fourth-Straight Season

Notre Dame is a hard place to be a student. Even harder to be a student-athlete. Yet the basketball team won another national academic honor

It’s no secret that being a student-athlete at Notre Dame isn’t the easiest thing.  It’s also no secret that despite the incredibly demanding workload and balance required, that Notre Dame’s athletic teams continuously impress in the class room on a national level.

That was again the case with the Notre Dame basketball team as this week they earned their fourth straight NABC Academic Honor.

From the University:

NOTRE DAME, Indiana (July 15, 2020) — The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team has earned a Team Academic Excellence Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) for the fourth consecutive year. The award requires a team to compile a minimum combined GPA of 3.0 for the 2019-20 season.

For the 2019-20 spring semester, the Irish boasted a 3.555 grade point average and a 3.338 average for the entire season. Each of Notre Dame’s 11 players earned a grade point average above 3.0 during the most recent school academic calendar year. In addition, the Irish conferred four undergraduate degrees (exiting seniors John Mooney and T.J. Gibbs along with rising fifth-year seniors Juwan Durham and Nikola Djogo) and a one-year Master’s of Business Administration degree for exiting fifth-year senior Rex Pflueger.

The Irish join Villanova, Seton Hall and Stanford as the only power conference men’s basketball teams to earn NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards in each of the last four seasons.

Congratulations to all involved on this remarkable honor.

Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Wire Daily/Weekend Recap (Edition 3)

Miss any Notre Dame news over the weekend? Catch up with the latest on all of it right here, right now!

In case you missed anything that happened with Notre Dame athletics this weekend then you’ve come to the right place as we recap you as quickly as possible right here.

There were no actual games played but the Notre Dame Athletics Page on YouTube live-streamed a replay of the 1993 win over Florida State while some heroes from that day offered commentary.  It brought back some great memories which I shared here.  If you’re interested, Notre Dame has released the entire 1993 home season as well, so if you’re bored just pull up this site and whatever you do, just make sure you don’t click on the Boston College game.

Is it still “too early” to give your pre-season rankings?  We found one outlet who officially declared it “Not Too Early” so we examined them, their formula and were surprised by how far another mid-west team ranked ahead of everyone else.

There was some recruiting news of note over the weekend as a pair of players included Notre Dame in their lists after making cuts of perspective schools.  Brock Bowers and Dont’e Thornton both did just that, click their names to learn more about each.  In basketball, a key transfer has Notre Dame on his remaining schools list after cutting things down on Friday.

Rivals updated their rankings for the 2022 class over the weekend and you can check out where some Notre Dame targets rank in those.

And finally for fun – our inagural FIW Tournament has come and gone as we’ve crowned the best Notre Dame football game since 1986.  The winner isn’t a surprise but the guy you see throw out the first pitch in the video included may be.

Plenty to come on Monday so keep checking out FIW throughout the day.  I hope everyone had a great weekend.
