POLL: What do you think of the Cardinals’ trade for Hollywood Brown?

What are your thoughts on the Cardinals’ trade to acquire Hollywood Brown?

The Arizona Cardinals pulled off a stunner Thursday night when they acquired star receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown from the Baltimore Ravens. Brown and quarterback Kyler Murray played together during Murray’s time at Oklahoma.

Brown is the speed compliment on the outside the Cardinals have been searching for. He is the long-term answer at WR2 to pair with Hopkins. It is also a sign of very good faith towards Murray, who has gone through his fair share of drama from the Cardinals’ front office.

Some across the NFL social media world think the Cardinals gave up too much to acquire Brown. They sent pick No. 23 but did receive an additional third-rounder from Baltimore. Fellow star receiver A.J. Brown was traded to the Eagles minutes later for the 18th overall pick and some thought the Cardinals should have gone that route.

With that in mind, what do you think of this blockbuster trade for the Cards? Vote in the poll and sound off in the comment section below the article.

Cardinals will pick up 5th-year option on Hollywood Brown’s contract

Brown will make $13.4 million in 2023 on the fifth-year contract option.

The Arizona Cardinals made a big move during the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night, trading their first-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens for wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and a third-round pick (No. 100 overall).

He was a first-round pick in 2019, selected 25th overall. He is eligible to have a fifth-year team option exercised on his contract. The Cardinals recently picked up the fifth-year option on quarterback Kyler Murray’s contract, as he also was drafted in 2019.

The Cardinals will exercise that fifth-year option on Brown’s contract before next week’s deadline, general manager Steve Keim said after the deal was made.

Keim said acquiring Brown made sense for multiple reasons. One was “two years of controlled costs,” he said.

Brown is due a little more than $2.1 million in salary in 2022 and then the fifth-year option will pay him more than $13.4 million.

For a team looking for a young No. 2 receiver, it makes sense.

Keim does not anticipate contract issues with Brown. It would appear Brown knows his turn for a contract extension will come up next year.

Updated draft picks for Cardinals after trade for Hollywood Brown

The Cardinals pick up an extra Day 2 pick from the Ravens in the deal to land Hollywood Brown.

Wow. It was no secret the Arizona Cardinals were in the market for a No. 2 receiver to pair with DeAndre Hopkins. When the Jameson Williams was taken by the Lions at pick No. 12, it didn’t appear like the Cardinals were going to get a premier wideout.

That changed when the Cardinals sent pick No. 23 to the Ravens for star receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown and a third-round pick. Following the blockbuster trade, here’s a look at the remaining picks left for the Cardinals.

  • Round 2: 55 overall
  • Round 3: 87 overall
  • Round 3(acquired from Ravens): 100 overall
  • Round 6: 201 overall
  • Round 6: 215 overall
  • Round 7: 244 overall
  • Round 7: 256 overall
  • Round 7: 257 overall

The Cardinals now potentially have the ammunition to move back up should another player their covet fall to the end of the first round or the beginning of the second.

Lamar Jackson is very clearly not thrilled about the Ravens trading Hollywood Brown

The star quarterback wasn’t ready to see his wideout leave Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens made one of the first major trades of the 2022 NFL Draft on Thursday night, sending wideout Hollywood Brown and the No. 100 overall pick to the Arizona Cardinals for the No. 23 overall pick.

That might not have left much time to inform their star quarterback of the move before it happened, and, uh, well Lamar Jackson doesn’t seem to be taking the news too well.

The former MVP—who is notably in the last year of his contract with Baltimore—saw the reports circulate on social media like everyone else and made it clear he’s not happy with the decision.

From a business perspective, the move makes plenty of sense. The Ravens initially drafted Brown No. 25 overall, got three years of service out of him on a rookie deal and flipped him for the No. 23 pick this year. It’s obvious why the club would feel encouraged to complete the trade.

That doesn’t make it any easier for the players in the huddle. And it surely doesn’t make things easier for Jackson, who had developed a rapport with the wideout over the last few years.

Baltimore entered the draft with +2000 odds to win Super Bowl 57 at Tipico. We’ll have to wait for the remainder of the draft to see if oddsmakers believe the deal led to an upgrade. So far, the Ravens’ quarterback doesn’t seem to believe that’s the case.

Watch: Trace McSorley and Hollywood Brown team for long Ravens’ score

The Ravens probably didn’t think Trace McSorley would be throwing a TD pass for them in Week 13

The Baltimore Ravens played the Pittsburgh Steelers tough despite all the issues they had getting to play on Wednesday.

Trace McSorley — yes, the former Penn State QB — came in to replace a hobbled Robert Griffin III and threw a 70-yard TD pass to Hollywood Brown that closed the gap to 19-14.

Ranking the No. 1 wide receivers Eagles’ CB Darius Slay will face in 2020

Ranking the No. 1 wide receivers Eagles CB Darius Slay will face in 2020

The Philadelphia Eagles can now lay claims to having one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL after they acquired Darius Slay from the Lions for draft picks.

Over the past few seasons, the Eagles have suffered at the hands of top-flight wide receivers and during the 2020 NFL season, they’ll face some of the best pass catchers on the planet.

The Eagles will play their three NFC East opponents (Dal, NYG, Was), four AFC North opponents (Bal, Cle, Pit, Cin) along with four teams from the NFC West (49ers, Rams, Seahawks, Cardinals) as well as the Saints and Packers.

That’s some heavyweight wide receiver play and a reason why some analysts and prognosticators believe the Eagles will have a hard time repeating as NFC East champions.

In the division, they’ll see Amari Cooper twice, along with Sterling Shephard and the dynamic Terry McLaurin.

During the four-game AFC North jaunt, they’ll face Marquise Hollywood Brown (Antonio Brown’s cousin), a huge matchup with Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster, and A.J. Green.

In the NFC West, Slay and the Eagles will face Deebo Samuel, Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, Robert Woods, and the electric DeAndre Hopkins.

And finally, Slay will have an all-world matchup with the Saints Michael Thomas and the Packers Davante Adams.

If all these guys are healthy, Slay and the Eagles secondary could arguably end up-facing five of the top-12 wideouts in the NFL this season.

With the virtual offseason progressing, we rank the No. 1 wide receivers on the Eagles 2020 NFL schedule.

If the team has no clear cut No. 1, then we ranked the top-2.

***

12. Deebo Samuel

A player that the Eagles could have chosen ahead of JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Samuel burst onto the scene with the 49ers and he’s going to be a really good one.

Samuel amassed 961 yards total from scrimmage last season – 802 through the air and 159 on the ground. That surpassed the previous high of 953 by Jerry Rice in 1985. Samuel’s s 961 scrimmage yards ranked 27th among all wideouts, and he was second to the Titans AJ Brown among rookies.

Baker Mayfield, other Oklahoma players named best player to wear their number per The Athletic

Oklahoma tops the list at four numbers and earned 38 honorable mentions on the world-class list.

With the entire world on hold, it has given us time to reflect on the past. The Athletic embraced debate and decided to compile a list of the best players to ever wear each jersey number, 1-99.

Oklahoma tops the list at four numbers and earned 38 honorable mentions on the world-class list.

Baker Mayfield earns the spot for No. 6. The 2017 Heisman Trophy winner and 2018 No. 1 pick began his career as a walk-on. Twice. He was three-for-three on Big 12 championships as a starter at Oklahoma and was a Heisman vote-getter in three consecutive seasons.

Two-time All-American and two-time national champion running back Tommy McDonald ranks as the best to ever wear No. 25. In 31 games under coach Bud Wilkinson, McDonald rushed for 1,696 yards, gained 420 yards through the air, and finished his career with 35 total touchdowns.

Newly appointed College Football Hall of Fame member Rickey Dixon is remembered as the best to wear No. 29. Dixon was a Jim Thorpe Award winner and an All-American at the safety position in 1987. A true ball hawk, Dixon snagged eight of his 16 career interceptions in his 1987 season.

The second Sooner to ever win a Heiman Trophy, Steve Owens is synonymous with No. 36. With back-to-back seasons (1968-69) of 1,500+ yard rushing seasons, Owens had one of the most elite careers not just in Oklahoma history, but college football history. Owens ended his career just under 4,000 yards rushing in 31 games (3,928) and a remarkable 59 touchdowns.

Honorable mentions:  Kyler Murray (No. 1), Derrick Strait (No. 2), Marquise Brown (No. 5), Tedy Lehman & Dede Westbrook (No. 11), Sam Bradford & Josh Heupel (No. 14), Jason White (No. 18), Billy Sims (No. 20), Joe Washington (No. 24), Adrian Peterson & George Cumby (No. 28), Gregg Pruitt (No. 30), Samaje Perine (No. 32), Billy Vessels (No. 35), Roy Williams (No. 38), Leon Heath (No. 40), Rod Shoate (No. 43), Brian Bosworth (No. 44), Kurt Burris (No. 51), Jerry Tubbs (No. 53), Tom Brahaney (No. 54), Jammal Brown (No. 55), J.D. Roberts (No. 64), Greg Roberts & Bill Krisher (No. 65), Granville Liggins (No. 66), Anthony Phillips (No. 68), Orlando Brown Jr. (No. 78), Mark Hutson (No. 79), Rick Bryan (No. 80), Ryan Broyles (No. 85), Keith Jackson (No. 88), Dewey Selmon (No. 91), Tony Casillas (No. 92),  Lee Roy Selmon & Gerald McCoy (No. 93), Tommie Harris (No. 97)

Bills vs. Ravens: 5 matchups to watch

The red hot Bills face the Baltimore Ravens who are a powerhouse in the AFC at New Era Field on Sunday, these are the key matchups to watch.

The Buffalo Bills, who sit at 9-3, have one of the toughest challenges of their season on Sunday when the 10-2 Baltimore Ravens come to New Era Field.

Both teams are led by strong defenses and young, dynamic quarterbacks. Buffalo has a chance to clinch just their second playoff birth this decade with a win against Super Bowl hopefuls, Baltimore Ravens.

With plenty at stake, here are the key matchups to watch when the Bills square off against the Ravens:

John Brown vs. Marcus Peters

Wide receiver John Brown is having one of his best seasons of his career with the Bills. So far this season he has 882 yards, averaging 14.5 yards per catch, and he has caught five touchdowns. All impressive stats for who was considered a ‘burner’ by many NFL pundits. Brown has been used as a deep threat by Buffalo’s this season, but his use in the intermediate and short routes has added an extra element in Buffalo’s offense.

Defensive back Marcus Peters joined the Baltimore Ravens via trade from the Los Angeles Rams in October. Since his arrival in Baltimore he has helped transform the Ravens secondary into one of the best in the NFL. Peters this season has five interceptions, three of them coming in a Ravens uniform. Peters is also a threat when he has the ball in the hands after the interception. Peters has three touchdowns coming off interceptions this season.

These two will be battling throughout the game, but if Brown can get the better of a re-energized Peters it can create havoc for the Ravens defense, and open up the game for Buffalo.
