Twitter thinks Riley Dixon cheated on Broncos’ game-winning field goal (he didn’t)

Twitter thought Riley Dixon used a sticky substance to help him hold the Broncos’ game-winning field goal, but it’s just turf burn.

Story update: Riley Dixon silenced the cheating allegations by posting a photo of his injured hand on social media. See our original story below.ย

After getting a second chance from a Buffalo Bills penalty, Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz converted a 36-yard field goal to secure a 24-22 win on Monday Night Football in Week 10.

After the game, there was some controversy on Twitter from fans who think Denver punter Riley Dixon used a sticky substance to be able to hold the ball for Lutz’s kick. Earlier in the game, Dixon mishandled a snap, leading to a failed extra-point attempt.

On the game-winning field goal, video showed what looked like a Stickum-like substance on the back of Dixon’s right hand. NFL rules, of course, do not allow players to use adhesives on their bodies to help grip the ball.

Here’s video of the play that shows the back of Dixon’s hand:

WATCH: Mac Jones details rigorous training to become special teams star

Mac Jones is the unsung hero of special teams, as he is the holder for Alabama’s field goal units. The special teams created a hilarious…

Special teams is full of unsung heroes.

The longsnappers do their job and get off the field, the less publicity the better. The kickers are praised when they get it through the uprights and hated when they don’t. No one likes to see punters take the field, unless you’re a fan of the opposing team.

It’s time we recognize the hard work of one of the hardest positions on the field.

Games are won and lost on field goals and extra points.

Whether it’s an extra point to send it to overtime, or a 53-yard field goal to win it all, the kicking unit is the unrecognized backbone of a football team.

It takes three to make a ball go through the uprights: a longsnapper, a holder and a kicker.

Long snapper Thomas Fletcher was the highest ranked long snapper according to Rubio Long Snappingย in the 2017 recruiting class and is currently a finalist for the 2020 Mannelly award for the nation’s best collegiate long snapper.

Kicker Will Reichard was the highest ranked kicker in the 2019 recruiting class. He is 69/69 on kicks for the 2020 season and is currently a finalist for the Lou Groza award for the nation’s best collegiate place kicker.

However, the third member of this squad was unranked, unrecognized, and wasn’t even recruited as a holder.

Holding stats? Good luck finding them.

In a position often forgotten about, Alabama holder Mac Jones has dedicated lots of training to make sure his position is put on the map.

Alabama football put together a short video of his workouts and testimonials from coaches and fellow teammates that details how hard he has worked at his craft.

It’s not everyday you get a holder this dedicated to the skill. So Mac, this is long overdue.

Broncos specialists have practiced together this offseason

Broncos kicker Brandon McManus will have a new long snapper and holder this season.

NFL coaches are not allowed to hold official practices at this time of year but players are allowed to work out together on a voluntary basis.

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock organized some unofficial practices in the Denver area and many of the team’s offensive players — and even some defenders — were able to attend them.

During a Zoom conference call with reporters on June 11, Broncos special teams coordinator Tom McMahon said the team’s specialists have also worked together this offseason.

“I canโ€™t be out there with them,” McMahon said. “I canโ€™t watch anything that theyโ€™re doing, but I know that all those guys โ€” our snappers, kicker and our punter โ€” have worked together already.

“I think it is necessary, but theyโ€™ve taken that upon themselves and done it. I think theyโ€™re going to come into camp ready to go.โ€

Denver kicker Brandon McManus will return this season but the team will have a new punter/holder (Sam Martin) and a new long snapper (either Jacob Bobenmoyer or Wes Farnsworth). Those specialists will get to work together at official practices when training camp starts later this month.
