The Cowboys offense is rolling now.

Deep into the second quarter, Dallas has extended their lead over a dysfunctional Washington club to 20-3 after running back Ezekiel Elliott scored his second touchdown of the game, this one on the ground.

Elliott took the handoff and then followed a cleat-cleaning block by pulling left guard Joe Looney, who wiped out rookie linebacker Cole Holcomb. Elliott shot through the hole then broke a tackle of his own on the way to a 33-yard scamper.

The score was Elliott’s second of the day and 12th on the ground for the season. He leads the club with 14 total touchdowns on the season in his first campaign to play in all 16 contests.

Watch: Big Cooper catch leads to Elliott TD reception for Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys have not looked like a team with a chance at making the playoffs thus far on Sunday, but finally things may have turned.

Leading 6-3, Dallas got a free play when the Redskins jumped offside, but returned to their side of the line right after the snap, allowing the play to continue. Bum shoulder and all, QB Dak Prescott heaved a long pass down the left sideline into double coverage because of the obvious free play. Amari Cooper leaped between the defenders and hauled in the 46 yarder.

A few plays later, Prescott escaped some pressure to move left and find a toe-tapping Ezekiel Elliott for the game’s first touchdown and the club’s first end zone entrance since the win over the Los Angeles Rams.

Watch: Jaylon Smith records first INT of his career in Week 17

The Cowboys middle LB comes up with the game’s first turnover.

The linebacker play has devolved in 2019 for the Cowboys. Despite his big contract, Jaylon Smith hasn’t been able to recreate the spark he had in 2018 when he emerged as a Pro-Bowl caliber player. Instead, he’s had shaky coverage issues before and after his reassignment to middle linebacker in Leighton Vander Esch’s absence.

None of those issues were apparent on the Cowboys first defensive drive, though. On third and long, Smith was able to intercept a third-consecutive incomplete pass to start the game by Redskins starter Case Keenum.

The pic was Smith’s first of his career. Dallas now has an anemic seven interceptions on the year.

The Cowboys needed to convert a 4th-and-1 to keep the earned possession, and did so on an Ezekiel Elliott run where he was slow to get up and the Washington defender who made the big hit needing to be taken off the field on a stretcher.
