Justin Herbert injury update: X-rays negative, will be monitored throughout the week

Justin Herbert was in a walking boot after the game, and he’s hoping to play this weekend against the Chiefs.

Justin Herbert reaggravated the high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 2, which caused him to leave the Chargers’ loss to the Steelers on Sunday.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Herbert underwent X-rays that came up negative. He will be monitored throughout the week as the team prepares for its Week 4 matchup with the Chiefs.

After the game, Herbert was in a walking boot. He said he’s hoping to play against Kansas City this weekend.

Jim Harbaugh told reporters that he had planned to take Herbert out at the first sign he had a limp, and that’s what he did.

Despite throwing for 125 yards and a touchdown, Herbert looked unstable during warmups and wasn’t moving well during the game, an indicator that it may not have been the best idea to play him from the beginning.

After taking a few big hits in the third quarter and then the sack by Elandon Roberts that forced Herbert out of the game, it becomes a question of why they elected to start him.

Latest injury update on Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ ankle

According to multiple reports, #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ MRI revealed a high ankle sprain.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was scheduled for additional tests on his right ankle on Sunday after injuring it during the AFC divisional round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke about the injury after the game, downplaying it as just a “tweak.” He confirmed that Mahomes received an X-Ray during the game that came back negative for any breaks or fractures.

According to reports from both NFL Network and ESPN, the MRI results revealed a high ankle sprain, but no additional damage.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said to expect Mahomes to be very sore and limited during the course of the practice week.

After the game, Mahomes was insistent that he’d be good to play in the AFC Championship Game. This isn’t the first time that he’s played through a high ankle sprain either. In Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season against the Jaguars, Mahomes suffered an ankle sprain, also finishing the game.

That ankle sprain hindered him at times throughout the early season, but he was able to play through it without any significant drop-off in his play. His mobility, obviously, took the biggest hit. A good sign, however, is that just like that occasion, Mahomes was spotted after the AFC divisional round win without any brace or boot on his right foot.

Latest injury update on Chiefs rookie LB Willie Gay Jr.

A recent report gives Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr. a recovery timeline.

[jwplayer REySUQa3-ThvAeFxT]

Kansas City Chiefs rookie LB Willie Gay Jr. suffered an ankle sprain early on during the Week 17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, according to a new report, it’s the dreaded high-ankle sprain. Those types of sprains have a longer recovery compared to a low-ankle sprain.

According to Kansas City Star beat writer Sam McDowell, Gay has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. That gives him a recovery timeline of anywhere from 2-4 weeks according to McDowell. This is the same injury that Chiefs rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire is dealing with, but he’s got a week on Gay in terms of his recovery. He was also considered to be “ahead of schedule.”

This timeline means that the earliest that Gay would be able to return to practice and play would be the AFC Championship Game. That’d, of course, mean that he’s able to recover as quickly as possible. It’s also possible that Gay misses out on the playoffs entirely if the Chiefs don’t make it to Super Bowl LV.

While Gay was slated to see perhaps his most snaps of the season in Week 17, the coaching staff still hasn’t really committed to using him for a bulk of the snaps on defense. That remained true even when Damien Wilson was sidelined with a knee injury. Gay really only saw action in the Chiefs’ base 4-3 personnel against teams that run a lot of 21 and 22 personnel looks. Otherwise, he was looking at between 10-20 snaps on average.

We’ll likely hear more about Gay’s injury status and timeline when Reid addresses the media ahead of practice for the divisional round of the playoffs. It’s worth keeping an eye on as he remains their most athletic player at the linebacker position.

Seahawks RT Brandon Shell has good chance to practice this week

Seattle Seahawks starting right tackle Brandon Shell has a good chance to practice this week after recovering from a high ankle sprain.

The Seattle Seahawks were hurting at right tackle in Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, to say the least, but one injured lineman could be close to returning.

Brandon Shell, who has missed the last couple of contests battling an ankle injury, is on the mend.

“Brandon Shell should be getting real close, he’s steadily improving,” coach Pete Carroll said during his Monday interview on 710 ESPN Seattle. “He wasn’t well enough to play but he has a good chance to practice some this week. It will probably take us all the way to the end of the week to know.

“I know playing against the Jets (his former team), he really wants to get in this game so he’ll do everything he can.”

With tackle Cedric Ogbuehi inactive against the Giants, backup right guard Jamarco Jones got the start at RT on Sunday until he too suffered an injury (groin pull) and had to leave the game. Chad Wheeler came in off the bench as Jones’ replacement.

Getting Shell back in the lineup would be key for Seattle to close out the regular season.

Safety Quandre Diggs is Seahawks’ secret superstar of wild-card round

The Seattle Seahawks have a secret superstar in the wild-card round, as safety Quandre Diggs will be returning from his high-ankle sprain.

Going into the 2019 season, the Seahawks thought they could replace future Hall of Fame safety Earl Thomas with an aggregate of young players who had not yet aligned their athleticism to their field awareness. They were wrong. To their credit, head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider went about correcting the problem by fleecing the Lions out of safety Quandre Diggs on Oct. 22. All they had to give up to get Diggs was a 2020 fifth-round pick, and Detroit even threw in a 2021 seventh-rounder.

The difference in Seattle’s secondary was immediate. From weeks 1-9, on posts, deep crossers, go routes, hitch-and-go routes, out-and-up routes — anything that would test a secondary deep — the Seahawks allowed five catches on six catchable targets for 144 yards, one touchdown, and one interception to the middle, right middle, and left middle of the field. But from weeks 10-13, Seattle didn’t allow a single reception under those conditions. Neither Diggs nor safety-mate Bradley McDougald was targeted at all on such routes. In Week 14, Diggs was one of the few bright spots in a 28-12 Week 14 loss to the Rams, picking off two Jared Goff passes and returning one for a touchdown.

Having a safety who knows what’s going on is kind of important, as Diggs showed in his pick-six. Goff tries to hit Robert Woods on a crossing route from left to right, but Diggs has it read all the way, and screams down from the deep third to take the ball away for a 55-yard score.

But Diggs suffered a sprained ankle in Week 16 against the Panthers, and it didn’t take long for Seattle’s pass defense to fall apart again. Jimmy Garoppolo took advantage in a Week 17 loss to the 49ers that cost Seattle the division title. Diggs is on pace to return to the field on Sunday against the Eagles, which is very good news for a defense desperately in need of smart safety coverage.

After ankle sprain scare, Bobby Wagner should be available Sunday

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner sprained his ankle Week 15 in Carolina but does not believe it will be a factor going forward.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner gave fans quite a scare Week 15 in Carolina when he went down on the field after a play in the fourth quarter. Able to walk off to sidelines under his own power, Wagner was then held out for the remainder of the ball game.

“I definitely was scared, but I’m good,” Wagner told reporters in the locker room. “The doctor said that if everybody goes out and votes for me for Man of the Year that it will be better. That’s what he said.”

After the win, coach Pete Carroll confirmed Wagner had sprained his ankle.

“I felt like I probably slipped a little, but then he hit me in my side and my back,” Wagner explained. “My leg kind of got caught underneath. I’ll be fine.”

Carroll provided an update on Wagner’s status during his Monday morning radio show on 710 ESPN Seattle.

“Bobby is going to try to ignore this as an injury,” Carroll said. “He doesn’t think it’s going to be a factor, but we’ll see.”

Quandre Diggs, however, may not be as fortunate. Carroll confirmed the safety suffered a high ankle sprain and could be sidelined for the near future.

Terron Armstead week-to-week after high-ankle sprain vs. Panthers

The New Orleans Saints lost starting left tackle Terron Armstead with a high-ankle sprain against the Carolina Panthers, sidelining him.

The New Orleans Saints lost starting left tackle Terron Armstead during Sunday’s game with the Carolina Panthers to a high-ankle sprain, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning. Armstead is managing his injury on a week-to-week basis and is already ruled out for Thursday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. High-ankle sprains can sideline players for as long as a month, though it’s not uncommon for them to return sooner.

It’s obviously a huge loss for the Saints offensive line. The step down from Armstead to his backup, Patrick Omameh, is as wide a gulf as there can be found in the NFL — when healthy, Armstead is an All-Pro talent and one of the best left tackles in the game. Omameh is a journeyman with more NFL experience at both left and right guard than left tackle. The Saints also have an option in rookie left tackle Ethan Greenidge, an undrafted free agent out of Villanova who has been a healthy inactive all year.

This injury compounds a bigger issue for the Saints offensive line, which is the absence of starting left guard Andrus Peat. Peat is expected to miss about four more weeks after having his broken arm surgically repaired. He’s normally the top option to fill in for Armstead at left tackle, but he’s off the table and replaced by backup left guard Nick Easton.

Hopefully things stabilize for the Saints soon, but for now, it appears they’re going into the late-season stretch with both their starting left tackle and left guard sidelined by injuries. Their next opponent is the Atlanta Falcons, who sacked quarterback Drew Brees six times just a few weeks ago, when both Armstead and Peat were in the lineup. New Orleans has to make some quick adjustments on the fly.
