College basketball: Ole Miss hires former Texas HC Chris Beard

Chris Beard is heading to Ole Miss.

Ole Miss officially announced Chris Beard as its new head basketball coach on Monday.

Beard was fired by Texas following a domestic violence charge against a family member in December. Rodney Terry took over for Beard as acting head coach and guided the Longhorns to a top 5 finish in the AP Top 25 Poll.

Legal charges against Beard were dropped in February, opening up the possibility for him to return to college basketball. Ole Miss jumped at the opportunity to hire Beard to lead its program.

Beard has a career record of 171-73 as a head coach with a strong track record in the NCAA Tournament. He led Texas Tech to a national championship appearance in 2019.

With Texas heading to the SEC ahead of the 2024 season, the Horns will share a conference with its former head coach.

WATCH: Chris Beard breaks down a funny fan reaction during film study

Chris Beard is finding creative ways to increase student engagement.

When Chris Beard took the Texas job during the offseason, one of his main priorities was to improve the home-court advantage. His goal was to start by finding ways to engage both him and the team with the student body, who has been lacking interest for some time now.

On Monday night against Sam Houston, the Horns played in front of the first “student only” crowd in program history. Beard started the night by hosting a “party at the tower” with free music, food and photo ops before the game.

The first-year head coach personally walked the students from the tower to Gregory Gym. Over 3,000 students packed the building creating an amazing atmosphere for a college basketball game.

On Wednesday, the Texas Men’s Basketball Twitter account began to have some fun with a specific fan wearing a Hawaiian shirt who was sitting behind the goal during Monday’s game.

Through the power of social media, the student was identified and invited to team practice on Wednesday by assistant coach Chris Ogden.

The “Hawaiian shirt kid” made it to the Erwin Center where Chris Beard analyzed some of his best reactions with the entire team. Beard thanked him for his support of the program and was treated to a nice standing ovation from the team.

Everything Chris Beard said at his introductory press conference

Chris Beard had his introductory press conference on Friday. Check out everything he had to say.

No, it was not an April Fools Day joke. Chris Beard was announced as the head coach at the University of Texas on Thursday. Not only did Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte weaken a tougher inconference opponent, but he hired one of the best coaches in the country.

One thing has been missing from Texas basketball over the past six years under Shaka Smart: NCAA Tournament success. As good of a coach and person Smart was, not being able to deliver in March ultimately caused the two to split up. Beard will be brought in to win right away.

The former Texas Tech head coach had his introductory press conference on Friday morning. His message to the media was clear. He came to the University of Texas to win basketball games and championships. Anything else will not be accepted.

As most coaches are judged on their introductory press conference, Beard’s went as well as it possibly could have. The type of message that will make fans want to run through a brick wall. The Longhorns have a good one on their hands.
