Jay Johnson says LSU pitcher Nate Ackenhausen was ‘ambushed’ in 1st inning by Wofford

Nate Ackenhausen couldn’t finish the bottom of the first as LSU fell behind 5-0 early in Sunday’s elimination game.

LSU baseball faces elimination on Sunday in a rematch against the Wofford Terriers, and the game got off to a nightmarish start.

[autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag] took the mound to begin the game, but his outing wouldn’t last long. He stayed for just 0.2 innings, allowing three hits and five runs (four earned) and was pulled from the game before the end of the bottom of the first in favor of [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag].

Speaking on the ESPN broadcast after LSU fell in an early hole, coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said Ackenhausen was “ambushed,” per On3.

“We can’t get two and three until you get one,” [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said. “So, that’s why our best pitcher is on the mound right now. Wofford did a nice job in the first inning. They ambushed Nate. Now, we just need to stay poised and try to scratch a couple together and get back in the game.”

The Tigers are looking to fight back and avoid elimination to clinch a spot in the regional final against North Carolina, who they lost to Saturday night.

The late-inning antics continued for LSU as Steven Milam walked it off with a solo shot to win the game 4-3.

[autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] got the start on the mound as the Tigers looked to get the Chapel Hill Regional off to a hot start. The late-inning antics continued for LSU as [autotag]Steven Milam[/autotag] walked it off with a solo shot to win the game 4-3.

His day finished after 7.1 innings where he gave up three runs on six hits, nine strikeouts, and zero walks. [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] entered the game in relief.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers tied the game as a [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] homer and a [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] homer tied the game 3-3.

In the top of the ninth inning, [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] entered the game for LSU and he struck out the side to give LSU a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth. Monster Milam led off for the Tigers in the bottom of the ninth and he promptly hit a walk-off bomb on a 3-2 count to win the game for LSU!

Umpires criticized for controversial fan interference call on Hayden Travinski home run in Game 1 vs. Texas A&M

Hayden Travinski gave the Tigers a would-be insurance run in the eighth, but it was wiped off the board by a controversial call.

LSU baseball ultimately hung on to its lead in Game 1 against No. 1 Texas A&M on Friday night, winning 6-4 to take the early advantage in a critical series at Alex Box Stadium.

However, the Tigers had the opportunity to gain a critical insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning that was ultimately wiped off the board by the officials. [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit what appeared to be a home run to give LSU a 7-4 lead.

But the home run was erased and Travinski called out as the umpires determined that a fan interfered with the ball. The call was the source of quite a bit of controversy, and it even prompted criticism from the broadcast team.

“That was not exactly what I thought we were gonna get,” SEC Network’s Kyle Peterson said, per On3’s Nick Schultz. “I thought we were gonna get either upheld or overturned. In fact, I thought we were gonna get overturned, it’s a double. Fan interference didn’t really enter my mind. I still don’t see it.”

D1Baseball managing editor Kendall Rogers also voiced his disagreement with the call on social media, sympathizing with frustrated LSU fans.

[autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] ultimately came through for the Tigers in the ninth. Though he allowed a pair of hits, he didn’t allow any damage as he earned the save.

Now, despite some controversy from the officials, LSU has a 1-0 lead in the series and has the chance to clinch it in Game 2 on Saturday night.

With runners on the corners and only one out, LSU was unable to score any more runs.

LSU was unable to score in the eighth and ninth innings as Auburn took game three by a score of 7-5. The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday evening against Grambling State.
