Chargers retaining special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken

Ryan Ficken has been a key member of the Chargers coaching staff.

Despite all the turnover in the coaching staff, the Chargers are retaining a key member.

According to multiple reports, special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken is staying in Los Angeles on Jim Harbaugh’s staff.

Hired to oversee the Bolts’ special teams two years ago, Ficken engineered some of the best units in the NFL in that timeframe.

Before joining the Chargers, Ficken spent the first 15 years of his NFL career with the Vikings, serving as the team’s special teams coordinator in 2021 after assisting the group for the prior eight seasons.

Report: Chargers to hire NaVorro Bowman as linebackers coach

The Chargers are expected to reach a deal with the former All-Pro linebacker.

Jim Harbaugh has already brought back Greg Roman from his San Francisco days. Reportedly, he won’t be the last name to return from the 2010s 49ers.

The Chargers are expected to reach a deal with former All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman to become their linebackers coach.

Bowman was an All-Pro linebacker in each one of his healthy Niners seasons under Harbaugh. In 2014, he missed the regular season with a torn ACL and MCL. Bowman would finish his playing career in 2017.

While Bowman doesn’t have formal coaching experience, he has spent the last three seasons as a defensive analyst for Maryland football. A step up to the pros would be an adjustment, but he obviously knows a thing or two about operating the middle of the field at the pro level. Especially while working with his former coach.

Bowman would be an inspired hire for a linebacker group in desperate need of retooling outside Daiyan Henley. Given their contractual situations, it seems unlikely that Kenneth Murray or Eric Kendricks will be back next season.

Bowman recently saw his longtime 49ers’ running mate Patrick Willis receive induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Now alongside Harbaugh once again, Bowman may not be done making an impact on the pro game after retiring four years ago.

Report: Chargers bringing back Shane Day as quarterbacks coach

The Chargers are bringing back a familiar face.

The Chargers are bringing back Shane Day to serve as the team’s quarterbacks coach, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.

Day was previously Los Angeles’ QBs coach during the 2021 and 2022 seasons under former head coach Brandon Staley. He was relieved along with former offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

Day spent the 2023 season as the Texans’ senior offensive assistant.

Day cracked in the NFL in 2007 as the 49ers’ offensive quality control coach.

Day has served as the quarterback coach of the Bears (2010-11) and 49ers (2019-20), the assistant offensive line coach of the Commanders (2014-15), and the tight ends coach of the Dolphins (2016-18).

Justin Herbert had a good relationship with Day, so familiarity should be good for him as the fifth-year signal-caller is about to play in yet another new offensive system.

The Chargers announced Greg Roman as their offensive coordinator and Marcus Brady as their passing game coordinator.

Chargers hire offensive, defensive coordinators

The Chargers and Jim Harbaugh continue to fill out their coaching staff with the announcements of new offensive and defensive coordinators.

The Chargers and head coach Jim Harbaugh continue to fill out their coaching staff with the announcements of new offensive and defensive coordinators.

Los Angeles is hiring Greg Roman as their offensive coordinator and Jesse Minter as their defensive coordinator.

Roman was Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator with the 49ers from 2011 to 2014. He helped the team reach Super Bowl XLVII during the 2012 season.

Roman was most recently with the Ravens, where he served as the team’s tight ends coach in 2017 and 2018 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019. He resigned after the 2022 season.

Minter was on Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan, where he led college football’s top-ranked defense in 2023. The Wolverines finished first in both scoring defense and yards allowed.

Minter has experience working for the Ravens as an assistant for two seasons. He worked his way up to defensive backs coach in 2020 before one season at Vanderbilt, where he was their defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

Report: Chargers hiring Andy Bischoff as tight ends coach, run game coordinator

The Chargers are adding another experienced coach to the staff.

The Chargers are hiring Andy Bischoff as their tight ends coach and run game coordinator, according to Football Scoop’s Doug Samuels.

Bischoff finished up his second season as the Giants’ tight ends coach.

Bischoff has extensive coaching experience, including the Ravens from 2015 to 2020. In that time, he was an offensive quality control coach, offensive assistant and assistant tight ends coach under former offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who is joining Los Angeles in a “prominent role.”

Bischoff has also been the tight ends coach for the Bears (2013-14) and Texans (2021).

Bischoff’s coaching career began at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in Minnesota in 1993. In 2008, he left to become the running backs coach for the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes, where he won two Grey Cups (2009, 2010).

Report: Chargers to hire Marcus Brady as pass game coordinator

Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff is taking shape.

Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff is taking shape.

The Chargers are hiring Marcus Brady as their pass game coordinator, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler added that Brady interviewed for the offensive coordinator job that presumably goes to Greg Roman, who is also expected to join the staff.

Brady was recently the Eagles’ senior offensive assistant.

Before joining Philadelphia, Brady was with the Colts for five seasons, starting as their assistant quarterbacks coach in 2018.

That year, he helped Andrew Luck finish with one of the best seasons of his career, in which he threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns en route to winning the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Brady was promoted to quarterbacks coach the following season. In 2020, Philip Rivers finished the season in the top ten of completion percentage (68%) and passing yards (4,169).

He became the Colts’ offensive coordinator in 2021. That year, Indianapolis finished second in the NFL in rushing yards per game (149.4) and yards per carry (5.1) and tied for the fifth-most rushing touchdowns (22).

Before joining the NFL ranks, Brady was an offensive coordinator in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for eight seasons.

Report: Chargers expected to hire Greg Roman for ‘prominent spot’

Greg Roman’s role remains to be seen.

The Chargers are looking to bring back one of Jim Harbaugh’s closest football confidants, with former Ravens and 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman heading to Los Angeles, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Roman last coached for the Ravens in 2022 but resigned in 2023 with differences in offensive philosophy causing strife. Dating back to Stanford, Roman has been one of Harbaugh’s top figures on staff. He was the Associate Head Coach at Stanford and offensive coordinator of Harbaugh’s Niners for four seasons.

The unknown in this situation is what his exact role will be. Early reporting from Aaron Wilson and other insiders projected Roman as a favorite for offensive coordinator. But, recent reporting from Pelissero and Rapoport has not connected him to that role for the Chargers. It is worth noting that Roman has coached tight ends and offensive line from a positional standpoint before. Run game coordinator could be an interesting role for one of the league’s brightest minds.

Associate or assistant head coach is another type of title that Roman could have. Whichever way you slice it, the odds of him taking the OC position specifically seem pretty low compared to before. That would open the door for a candidate like Tanner Engstrand to take the offensive coordinator job. He does have Harbaugh connections from the San Diego days, which seems noteworthy as Engstrand interviews around the league.

While the team hasn’t officially announced any hirings, we know some of the coaches Harbaugh will have on his staff.

According to KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson, Mike Devlin is expected to coach the offensive line. Jesse Minter will be the defensive coordinator. Jay Harbaugh will coach the safeties. Ryan Ficken is expected to be retained as special teams coordinator. Greg Roman will be brought in, but his role remains to be seen.

Devlin, a 21-year NFL coaching veteran, finished his second season as the Ravens’ assistant offensive line coach.

Minter was on Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan as defensive coordinator, where he led college football’s top-ranked unit in 2023.

Harbaugh was an assistant coach for the Wolverines and worked with the running backs and safeties.

Roman was previously Baltimore’s offensive coordinator from 2019-2022. He is very familiar with Harbaugh, having been his OC with the 49ers from 2011-2014 and an associate head coach on Harbaugh’s staff at Stanford in 2009 and 2010.
