Broncos pull out 21-17 victory in London over Jaguars

The Denver Broncos pulled out a nail-biter, 21-17 over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

The Denver Broncos pulled out a 21-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

Early on, Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson underthrew wide receiver Courtland Sutton resulting in an interception. Jacksonville went down and made it a 7-0 game in the first quarter.

The Jaguars’ offense drove into the red zone in the second quarter, only to be picked off by safety Justin Simmons in the end zone.

Denver came out in the second quarter, working the ball to wide receiver Jerry Jeudy often. The drive ended in a Jeudy touchdown on a jet motion.

Denver came out of halftime, trailing 10-7, and worked the ball to Jeudy and Greg Dulcich on a 98-yard scoring drive, ending in a Melvin Gordon touchdown.

The Broncos defense continued to be physical against the Jacksonville offense. Jacksonville went up 17-14 late in the fourth on a Travis Etienne touchdown run. Wilson came out and hit receiver KJ Hamler for 49 yards. The offense worked the ball into the red zone, scoring its third red zone touchdown of the day.

Denver cornerback K’Wuan Williams picked off Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence on the ensuing drive, essentially icing the game for the Broncos.

With the victory, Denver snaps a four-game losing streak going into their bye.

That overseas flight home will be a whole lot sweeter.

Chargers HC Brandon Staley sounds off on benching CB J.C. Jackson

Chargers HC Brandon Staley had seen enough.

The Chargers sought out cornerback J.C. Jackson this past offseason, hoping to be the anchor of the defensive backfield.

Jackson missed the first two games due to off-season ankle surgery. When he finally got on the field, Jackson struggled to play up to the five-year, $82.5 million contract he signed in March.

Entering Week 6, Jackson had been targeted 20 times while allowing 15 receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Further, he had yet to intercept a pass and was credited with just a single pass breakup.

Enough was enough on Monday night against the Broncos when Jackson’s struggles continued. After a porous first-half performance, he was benched to start the second half in favor of seventh-year Michael Davis.

“It just wasn’t good enough in the first half and we felt like we needed to make a change,” Brandon Staley said on the decision to bench Jackson.

Jackson was called for defensive pass interference on a deep pass intended for wide receiver Courtland Sutton on the Broncos’ first drive.

It was all downhill from there.

On Denver’s next drive, which resulted in a 39-yard touchdown by rookie Greg Dulcich, they were in Cover 3, and instead of covering his side of the field, Jackson followed K.J. Hamler, leading to a wide-open Dulcich.

When asked if Dulcich’s touchdown was on Jackson, Staley replied, “Yeah.”

Two drives later, right before the half, Jackson got beat on a double move by Hamler, resulting in a 47-yard pickup.

“The Hamler catch, was J.C. beat there?” Staley responded, “Yeah.” “Was he supposed to have safety help?” Staley said, “No.”

Before the matchup with Denver, Jackson said that the ankle was not the issue for his early struggles.

Instead, he said it was a matter of getting his confidence back and acclimating to the defensive scheme after going from a man-heavy system with the Patriots to playing the most zone coverage he has ever played.

With New England, Jackson earned All-Pro honors in 2021 after registering eight interceptions and a league-leading 23 pass deflections.

Nevertheless, once Davis took the field, the play in the secondary improved. He did a great job of locking up his side of the field, and he broke up a pass intended for Courtland Sutton in the fourth quarter.

“Mike gave us a chance in the second half,” Staley said.

Now, still early in the season, the question looms of what the Chargers will do with the outside spot opposite Asante Samuel Jr. going forward

Do they throw Jackson back into the mix, hoping to see an improvement, or simply because they’re paying him too much money to stand on the sidelines?

Or, do they ride with Davis, who had a better two quarters than Jackson has had all season?

We wait and see how it all unfolds.

Greg Dulcich makes immediate impact for Broncos

Denver Broncos rookie tight end Greg Dulcich wasted little time showing off his big-play potential now that he’s back to full strength

The Denver Broncos had high hopes for Greg Dulcich when they drafted the UCLA tight end in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft, but he started his first season on injured reserve, missing the first five games of the year.

Dulcich was activated just in time for Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, and he wasted little time living up to the hype, showing off his big-play ability on a 39-yard touchdown catch from Russell Wilson.

Denver’s offense is desperate for a spark of some kind, and it looks like Dulcich might just be able to provide it, now that he’s back to full strength.

NFL fans roasted Russell Wilson for ignoring a WIDE open receiver in the middle of the field

Wilson cannot keep missing EASY throws like this.

It’s been a bumpy start to Russell Wilson’s tenure with the Broncos. With Denver hovering around .500, their season is far from over. But if Wilson keeps playing poorly enough to earn the apparent ire of his teammates, it won’t be long before the Broncos are out of the playoff picture.

As Denver took on the rival Chargers (-4) on Monday night, Wilson still seemed to be somewhat locked into his current slump. On their first possession, Wilson drove the Broncos into field goal range. But when he had an opportunity to extend the drive on a third and short by throwing it to a very open Greg Dulcich, Wilson completely ignored him:

The result of the play was, unsurprisingly, a Khalil Mack sack that forced the Broncos to settle for a field goal and an early 3-0 lead.

Wilson would later find Dulcich for a 39-yard touchdown, but the damage of the early possession was done. There should have been so much more from a veteran quarterback that is seemingly missing plenty of open receivers in big spots this year.

Russell Wilson connected with UCLA rookie Greg Dulcich for a TD

Greg Dulcich’s hamstring issues kept him off the field for the first part of the 2022 NFL season.

The rookie from UCLA was activated before Denver’s game with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday.

It was a homecoming of sorts and he made the most of it early, catching a 39-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson.

The PAT gave the Broncos a 10-0 lead in a first quarter that saw Russell Wilson complete his first 10 passes.
