Leaky Black shows off hops in Thursday night G-League action

Leaky Black became known for his lockdown defensive abilities for the UNC men’s basketball team. In the G-League, he’s dunking with ease.

When you think of past UNC basketball players who exemplify “The Carolina Way,” who are some people that come to mind?

For me, one of the most recent is Leaky Black, the Concord, N.C. native who played at Carolina from 2018-2023. Black was primarily known as a lockdown defender, but added a solid 3-point shooting touch to his arsenal during the 2022-2023 campaign.

It’s always sad to see a Carolina staple leave, but not when that player is continuing their hoops career.

For Leaky, he is living a dream that any young basketball player desires – suiting up for an NBA team. Better yet, Leaky is playing for his hometown Charlotte Hornets.

Black is currently on a 2-way contract with Charlotte, suiting for its G-League affiliate Greensboro Swarm. If he hasn’t captured the organization’s attention already, wait until you see this thunderous dunk he throws down:

Despite Black ending his night with 13 points and eight rebounds, the Swarm were overpowered in a 139-107 loss at the Capital City Go-Go, G-League affiliate of the Washington Wizards. Black’s point output was above his season average of 11.6.

I miss the days of watching Leaky steal a basketball with ease, sprinting up the court and throwing the ball down. If he keeps making highlight-reel slams like the one in the above video, he’ll be back up in Charlotte long before the season ends.

Former Nebraska G Bryce McGowens scores 32 points in G-League debut

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers guard Bryce McGowens had an outstanding G-League debut

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers guard Bryce McGowens had an outstanding performance on Friday night for the Greensboro Swarm in the G-League. McGowens scored 32 points, while knocking down three out of his eight three-point attempts. He also added five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

The Charlotte Hornets selected McGowens in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft. This season, he has appeared in five games for the Hornets logging 30 total minutes. In that short time, he has recorded 16 points, two steals, and a block. The Hornets transferred first-round pick Mark Williams and McGowens to the Swarm on November 10th.

Below are the early highlights of McGowens’s NBA/G-League season.

LaVar Ball: Hornets ‘don’t understand what they got’ in LiAngelo

LaVar is ready for LiAngelo to join LaMelo on the Charlotte Hornets.

LaVar Ball is at it again.

The Big Baller Brand CEO spoke with TMZ on Friday and had some things to say about his son LiAngelo not getting called up the Hornets yet.

“They don’t understand what they got,” LaVar said. “They need to go ahead and let my boy play.”

LiAngelo is currently playing for the Hornets G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, but there’s been no indication that he’ll get called up to the Hornets roster anytime soon.

“I dropped them a superstar in the G League and they don’t know what to do with him,” Ball said.

LiAngelo is averaging 9.6 points on 35% shooting from 3-point range in five games with the Swarm, including a 22-point debut.

LaVar stated that he thinks LiAngelo will get called up to the NBA this season, but if not, he has another NBA team in mind for his middle son to play for.

“I already said the Lakers but they got rid of Zo. Then I said Charlotte — y’all got him right in your backdoor. Bring him in and let him play with Melo! Now, I got a new destination — L.A. Clippers.”

Hornets announce LiAngelo Ball has been waived

Just a day after signing him, the Hornets have waived LiAngelo.

Following signing with the Hornets on Thursday, the team announced on Friday that they have waived guard LiAngelo Ball.

But, this comes as no surprise or need for panic.

After signing Ball on Thursday, the Hornets roster stood at 19 players. By waiving Ball, that doesn’t mean he won’t be back at some capacity.

The plan for LiAngelo was to always play for the Hornets’ G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. By signing him to a contract and waiving him, they still hold his rights to add him to their G League roster.

So no, you won’t be seeing LiAngelo at the NBA level with the Hornets but still expect to see him in a Swarm jersey this coming season.
