Grant Williams grills former teammate Derrick White at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Williams tried out being a member of the media, but it did not go as planned.

Recently, when he is not suiting up for his new team, the Charlotte Hornets, former Boston Celtics big man Grant Williams has been putting on his reporter hat to provide a unique angle on the 2024 Paris Olympics. And of course, Williams made a point of showing up for a recent Team USA press conference to give some of his former Boston teammates a hard time.

He singled out Derrick White in particular to harass in a good-natured way, asking the Team USA glue guy a rather pointed question. “I heard a rumor that you were considering naming your son after a former teammate, is that true?,” he asked via the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

“Who was that teammate? And did he end up being the godfather of your children?”

“You know, in this game of basketball you learn a lot of things, and every locker room is a little different,” answered White, whose son’s names are Hendrix and Daxton. “But Grant Williams was never in consideration for my child’s name.”

“My kid will give you a high-five, though, so you’ve got that going for you. Maybe just be around more. You’re an absentee, self-proclaimed godfather.”

Here’s how Grant Williams could get a championship ring from the Celtics-Mavericks NBA Finals

Could Grant Williams actually win a ring without playing a single minute in this series? Here’s your answer.

We should just call this NBA Finals the Grant Williams Bowl. He’s become one of the most interesting points of conversation and the series hasn’t even started yet.

Folks are wondering whether Williams, a former Boston Celtic and Dallas Maverick, could get a championship ring out of the NBA Finals this year with his two former teams playing one another.

The questions were also fueled by a quote reportedly circulated by Williams stating that he wouldn’t turn down a championship ring from either team if he was, indeed, offered one.

But would he actually get one? That’s the question. And there is an answer to it. But, first, let’s make a quick point of clarification.

That Grant Williams quote on the NBA Finals isn’t real

The internet has been circulating a quote that Williams allegedly said he wouldn’t turn down a championship ring.

As it turns out, though, that quote isn’t real — it’s from the Ballsack Sports parody account. Not only was Williams not asked about this, but he never actually said this either.

This is just a case of the internet taking the wrong thing and running with it. Again.

What a shame.

Wow. Ok. But still — could Williams get a championship ring?

I’m not sure if Williams would actually get a ring, but it’s certainly possible that he could. At least, if the Mavericks win, anyway.

Remember, while Williams was a staple in the Celtics’ rotation for years, he didn’t actually play for the Celtics this season. He was sent to Dallas in a 3-team trade last summer as part of a deal netting Boston some second-round picks. So he wasn’t part of Boston’s roster this season and wouldn’t be able to get a championship ring from a successful NBA Finals run.

But Williams did play for Dallas this year. He was a Maverick until Dallas traded him to Charlotte during the NBA’s trade deadline. That’s technically long enough that the team could offer him a championship ring should the Mavericks win it all.

That’s a big if, though. The Mavericks would have to decide whether to offer Williams a ring. But if he was to get a ring this year, Dallas is the only place it could come from.

Grant Williams was disappointed by how the Boston Celtics honored his return

If Williams was irked when he got a 15-second video “tribute” on his return to Boston, it’s understandable.

Grant Williams was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 22nd overall selection of the 2019 NBA draft, and the North Carolina native played all four seasons of his rookie contract with the Celtics. Over that time, Williams grew with Boston, becoming a vice president of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

He also won the Celtics a postseason game, and even weathered Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antentokounmpo planting his size 900 sneakers on his head without leaving the game. So if Williams was irked when he got a 15-second video “tribute” on his return to Boston, it’s understandable.

The former Boston big man opened up about the perceived slight in a recent interview with CLNS Media’s “Cedric Maxwell” podcast cohosts. Check it out below!

Mock trade sees Spurs land Grant Williams from Hornets

Should the San Antonio Spurs trade for Grant Williams this offseason?

The San Antonio Spurs should be looking to significantly improve their roster around Victor Wembanyama this summer. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report suggested a deal that would see the Spurs land Grant Williams in exchange for Devonte’ Graham and a lottery-protected 2025 first-round pick.

“With the Hornets knee-deep in an organizational overhaul, they should be fully focused on the future and landing the No. 1 pick would only further cement that stance,” Buckley wrote. “While Williams is young enough (25) to fit that future, he’d also be immediately expendable if Charlotte planned on taking stretch big man Alexandre Sarr first overall. And Williams’ plug-and-play ability might be coveted by San Antonio, as Victor Wembanyama already sounds eager to start winning.

“Moving Williams would give Charlotte more flexibility moving forward. He’s owed $40.9 million over the next three seasons, which isn’t outrageous but is a significant salary, especially if the Hornets wouldn’t keep him in the starting lineup. Graham, who spent his first three seasons in Buzz City, has just a partially guaranteed $12.7 million salary left on his deal. While the Hornets’ lottery protection will likely keep their 2025 first-rounder from changing hands, the pick would then convert to their second-rounders in 2026 and 2027. Those would be helpful for Charlotte if this ongoing rebuilding projection takes a while to finish.”

Having Williams’ defense and three-point shooting next to Wembanyama could help improve the Spurs on both ends of the court.

Boston alum Grant Williams doesn’t know when he became the bad guy

Williams spoke about recent comments made suggesting that he is a bad teammate.

Grant Williams doesn’t know when he became the bad guy. But the former Boston Celtics backup forward — about as amicable as they come off the court — has seen his reputation shift from nerdy backup forward to “a bad locker room guy” in some corners.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Cedric Maxwell” podcast, the eponymous Cedric Maxwell and his co-host Josue Pavon, recently sat down with the former Boston swingman to talk about recent comments made suggesting that he is a bad teammate. Williams opens up on how these comments hit him at first, and how he has reacted since then.

Grant Williams reveals what it was like changing coaches from Ime Udoka to Joe Mazzulla

What was it like changing head coaches from former Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka to current Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla?

What was it like changing head coaches from former Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka to current Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla? Former Boston backup forward Grant Williams had the experience of having played for both during his time with the Celtics, and opened up about it in a recent podcast interview.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Cedric Maxwell” podcast, the eponymous Cedric Maxwell and his co-host Josue Pavon, linked up with the Tennessee alum this week to talk about the differences between Udoka and Mazzulla as coaches, and his experience of transitioning from one head coach to another.

Grant Williams opens up on his rep, Mavs, trade to Charlotte Hornets and more

Since Grant Williams left the Boston Celtics to join the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, things have not exactly gone his way.

Since Grant Williams left the Boston Celtics to join the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, things have not exactly gone his way. The North Carolina native got traded to the team in his home city, the Charlotte Hornets, but not under the best of terms. He reportedly clashed with teammates in Dallas beforehand, and found himself accused of being a bad teammate in the press.

To get us up to speed, Williams joined a recent episode of the CLNS Media “Cedric Maxwell” podcast to talk it all over with the show’s hosts Cedric Maxwell and Josue Pavon on a recent episode.

They get into his reputation since splitting his season between Dallas and Charlotte, playing with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, and the difference between playing for former Celtics head coach Ime Udoka and Joe Mazzulla. Check it out below.
