UFC Fight Night 229 video: Bobby Green upsets Grant Dawson with 33-second knockout

Bobby Green pulled off a massive upset at UFC Fight Night 229 when he knocked out Grant Dawson in the first round.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] pulled off a massive upset on Saturday when he knocked out [autotag]Grant Dawson[/autotag] in the first round at UFC Fight Night 229.

Green (31-15-1 MMA, 12-9-1 UFC) came out confident from the outset of the lightweight headliner at the UFC Apex, holding his hands low. He measured up Dawson (20-2-1 MMA, 8-1-1 UFC) and clipped him with a left hand that dropped him. “King” swarmed, and forced referee Keith Peterson to step in just 33 seconds into the contest.

Check out the replay of Green’s finish below (via X):

After submitting Tony Ferguson in August, Green is now riding back-to-back wins at 155-pounds, ending Dawson’s perfect UFC tenure. He wouldn’t make any callouts after the fight, but said he wants to compete again this year.

“I don’t call shots I just take whoever they put in front of me,” Green said in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “I can call names all day. I don’t like to call shots. I want to call a date. I want to fight in December. I want to be the most active fighter this year. I have the most fights of 2023”

UFC Fight Night 229: Grant Dawson vs. Bobby Green odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 229 odds between Grant Dawson and Bobby Green, with MMA picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

In a 5-round lightweight bout in the main event, Grant Dawson and Bobby Green meet Saturday at UFC Fight Night 229 — also known as UFC Vegas 80 — at UFC Apex. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s around the UFC Fight Night 229: Dawson vs. Green odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims can be viewed on ESPN+ starting at 4 p.m. ET with the main card following on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET.

Records: Dawson (20-1-1) | Green (30-14-1)

Dawson takes the walk looking to avoid taking his first-ever loss at the UFC level. He is 8-0-1 in 9 bouts since arriving at the UFC, with his lone blemish a draw against Ricky Glenn in Oct. 2021. He has recorded 2 finishes, both via submission, in the past 3 fights, although his last outing resulted in a unanimous-decision win over Damir Ismagulov in July.

Green picked up a submission win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 291 last time out in late July. That followed up a no-contest against Jared Gordon, as he accidentally head-butted Gordon going in for a jab. The win over Ferguson was huge, snapping a 2-bout losing streak and the no-contest. He has won just 3 times in the past 8 bouts, losing twice via KO/TKO, and twice via unanimous decision.

Green has an overwhelming 6.14-to-2.99 significant strikes landed per minute, while Dawson is much more accurate at 63.90% to just 54.88% for the challenger. Dawson also dominates in takedowns, leading 3.70-to-1.21 in takedown average, and 1.48-to-0.32 in submission average.

UFC Fight Night 229: Grant Dawson vs. Bobby Green picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Dawson (-490) will cost you nearly 5 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for not nearly enough reward.

Green (+380) has struggled with consistency, and Dawson is just such a versatile fighter, capable of taking him down a number of ways. I actually like Dawson’s ability on the canvas, and see DAWSON BY SUBMISSION (+130) at plus-money for the method of victory as the much better value.

Over/Under (O/U)

Under 4.5 Rounds (-220) and No: Will the fight go the distance (-235) are each much too expensive.

Dawson has ended up getting the finish in 2 of his past 3 fights, and 5 of the past 8 outings. Green has ended up with finishes in 3 straight fights if you take out the no-contest against Gordon.

AVOID.

UFC Fight Night 229 video: Bobby Green snubs Grant Dawson’s handshake, questions antics

Bobby Green had a lot to say to Grant Dawson when they got face-to-face for their UFC Fight Night 229 staredown.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] had a lot to say to [autotag]Grant Dawson[/autotag] when they got face-to-face for their UFC Fight Night 229 staredown.

After Green (30-15-1 MMA, 11-9-1 UFC) spent most of fight week downplaying the “boring” skills of his opponent, while Dawson (20-1-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) propped up his foe as a “nice guy” behind the scenes, they finally confronted each other before Saturdays’ lightweight main event, which takes place at the UFC Apex and streams on ESPN+.

Dawson attempted to shake Green’s hand, but “King” wanted no part of it as they talked smack back-and-forth before being ushered off stage by UFC security.

Grant Dawson: Islam Makhachev ‘beatable,’ Charles Oliveira rematch ‘a much more competitive fight’

Grant Dawson expects a much better showing from Charles Oliveira in his UFC 294 title rematch with Islam Makhachev.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Grant Dawson[/autotag] expects a much better showing from [autotag]Charles Oliveira[/autotag] in his rematch with [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag].

Lightweight champion Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) is scheduled to run things back with Oliveira (34-9 MMA, 22-9 UFC) in the UFC 294 headliner on Oct. 21 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.

In their first fight at UFC 280, Makhachev dominated Oliveira en route to a second-round submission. Dawson, who faces Bobby Green in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 229 headliner at the UFC Apex, can’t imagine Oliveira doing worse in his second opportunity.

“Short answer: Islam wins again,” Dawson told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 229 media day. “Long answer, it’s a much more competitive fight this time. 99 percent of the nerves going into a fight is the unknown.

“I don’t know how strong this guy is, I don’t know how fast this guy is. Charles knows all of that. Also, Charles has nothing to lose. He’s going to go in against a guy that’s already beaten him. He can do nothing but look better against Islam in this next fight.”

[lawrence-related id=2684897,2684562,2684408,2684392]

Dawson also points to Makhachev’s past fight as a big factor. Makhachev edged out featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in a decision win at UFC 284 in February in a fight which ended with him in bottom position taking a barrage of punches.

“Islam has looked mortal,” Dawson continued. “Islam has looked like a real person against a 45’er. So, it kind of shows the division that yes, he’s really good. Yes, he’s the best in the world, but he is beatable, and there are guys out there that can beat him.

“And somebody like Charles Oliveira could get it done. Would you be shocked if you read that he got a guillotine win? He’s got one of the best guillotines in the game. So, I think Islam still wins, but it’s a much more competitive fight.”

Grant Dawson: UFC Fight Night 229 win over Bobby Green worth more than higher ranked fighters

Grant Dawson is putting a lot of stock on a potential win over Bobby Green in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 229 headliner.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Grant Dawson[/autotag] doesn’t mind fighting an unranked opponent, even though some believe it’s time he does.

Dawson (20-1-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) returns to action this Saturday with his first octagon headliner at UFC Fight Night 229 against Bobby Green (30-14-1 MMA, 11-9-1 UFC). “King” is a veteran and a known name, but not one of the 15 fighters on the UFC’s official lightweight rankings.

This doesn’t bother Dawson. In fact, he’s actually glad to be fighting rather than some other names in the rankings.

“Matchups don’t make any sense to me anyway,” Dawson told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 229 media day. “I’m not a really big, anything outside the champion is just suggestion. The rankings change very single day. If he beats me on Saturday night, then the matchup wasn’t that weird.

“I’m taking Bobby Green very seriously. I know how good he is, and I’m going to be honest with you, I think a win over Bobby Green does more for my career than a couple of wins over some other guys in the top 15. I just think he’s got that much of star power, he’s that big of a veteran, and I’m expecting the best Bobby Green on Saturday night.”

[lawrence-related id=2684891,2684416]

Apart from getting someone with a name, Dawson will also get top billing on a card for the first time. This is a special moment for the American Top Team fighter, and he plans to utilize it properly.

“I wanted to be a UFC world champion from day one, and if I want to be a UFC world champion, I have to know that these kind of moments are going to happen,” Dawson said. “They’re great, and I’m so happy that they’re finally starting to get here, but this was supposed to happen. I’m supposed to be in a main event. I’m supposed to be doing this kind of thing. Now I get to show the UFC you can put me in a main event and I can perform, and I can go all five rounds if need be. This is everything I’ve ever worked for.”
