Couch: Analyzing next season’s Michigan State basketball roster

Michigan State basketball could be very good next year depending on how some key roster decisions pan out

Michigan State basketball could be very good next year depending on how key roster decisions pan out.

The Spartans enter the offseason as one of the favorites to win the Big Ten next season, and they could be the stand-alone favorite if Tyson Walker and Malik Hall return. There also would be a trickle-down effect should those two return for another season in the green-and-white in 2023-24.

So how does Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal envision the Spartans’ roster looking next season? Click on the tweet below to read Couch’s analysis on what the Spartans’ 2023-24 roster could look like:

See how LSJ’s Graham Couch envisions Michigan State’s game against Marquette at the NCAA Tournament playing out on Sunday

Michigan State basketball will be playing for a trip to the Sweet 16 on Sunday.

The Spartans knocked off USC on Friday to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Waiting for the Spartans is No. 2 seed Marquette, who made easy work of No. 15 seed Vermont in their first round matchup.

Michigan State last reached the Sweet 16 in 2019, and has only reached the second weekend of the tournament one time in their last seven appearances. Can the Spartans break that streak and reach the Sweet 16 with a victory over the Golden Eagles? Big Ten Tournament: Matchup analysis, game prediction for MSU-Ohio State from LSJ’s Graham Couch

See how LSJ’s Graham Couch envisions Michigan State’s game against Ohio State at the Big Ten Tournament playing out on Friday

Let’s run it back!

For a second time in less than a week, Michigan State basketball will take on Ohio State — this time in a quarterfinals matchup in the Big Ten Tournament from the United Center in Chicago.

The Spartans swept the season series of the Buckeyes, including a narrow victory last week on Senior Day. But Ohio State overall is playing better down the stretch, with wins in four of their last five games — including two wins already in the Big Ten Tournament over Wisconsin and Iowa.

Matchup analysis, game prediction for MSU-Ohio State from LSJ’s Graham Couch

See how LSJ’s Graham Couch envisions Michigan State’s game against Ohio State playing out on Saturday

It’s Senior Day at Michigan State on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans will welcome the Buckeyes to the Breslin Center looking to finish the regular season strong with a season-sweep of Ohio State. Michigan State topped the Buckeyes earlier this year by more than 20 points in Columbus.

Michigan State comes into this tilt after a massive comeback victory at Nebraska on Tuesday. That win over the Cornhuskers should have clinched a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the Spartans, but a win over Ohio State would only improve their resume.

Ohio State is also coming into this game on a high note after winning their past two games against Illinois and Maryland (both of which were at home). Prior to those two wins, the Buckeyes had lost 14 of their last 15 games.

Graham Couch of LSJ analyzes Jaden Akins’ recent offensive rise, what it means for MSU

Jaden Akins is quickly becoming one of the Spartans’ most potent offensive threats

Jaden Akins is quickly becoming one of the Spartans’ most potent offensive threats.

Akins has averaged nearly 10 points per game this year for the Spartans, but has really taken his play to the next level in the last two games. Akins had 21 points in a narrow defeat at Iowa on Saturday and 17 points at Nebraska in a much-needed win on Tuesday night.

Akins combined with Tyson Walker and A.J. Hoggard makes a dangerous back court for the Spartans.

Click on the tweet below to see Graham Couch’s analysis on Akins’ recent strong play on the offensive end of the floor and what it means going forward for Michigan State:

Michigan State basketball returns to its home floor on Tuesday night in what will be a highly emotional evening at the Breslin Center.

Indiana comes in looking to extend a strong stretch. The Hoosiers have won nine of their last 11 games, including a double-digit victory over the Spartans in late January.

Matchup analysis, game prediction for MSU-Michigan from LSJ’s Graham Couch

See how LSJ’s Graham Couch envisions Michigan State’s game against Michigan playing out on Saturday

Michigan State basketball will return to the floor on Saturday night in what should be a very interesting and odd game.

The Spartans have been off all week after their game originally scheduled for Wednesday against Minnesota was postponed due to an on-campus shooting that left three students dead. Michigan State last played on Sunday — which was a victory over Ohio State.

Michigan enters this game looking to bounce back from a pair of narrow defeats that have left the Wolverines firmly on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble. However, in this rivalry series, Michigan has won four of the five previous meetings with the Spartans in Ann Arbor.

Matchup analysis, game prediction for MSU-Ohio State from LSJ’s Graham Couch

See how LSJ’s Graham Couch envisions Michigan State’s game against Ohio State playing out on Sunday

Michigan State will have another opportunity on Sunday to help bolster their NCAA Tournament resume in a road test at Ohio State.

The Spartans picked up a much-needed victory on Tuesday against Maryland to snap a two-game losing streak. That victory improved Michigan State to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play, and more importantly was a tournament boosting win.

Ohio State has been in a downward spiral over the past month and winning in Columbus won’t be as notable as before, but this is certainly another great opportunity for Michigan State.
