WATCH: MSU basketball, Tom Izzo reacts to making NCAA Tournament

It wasn’t easy, but Michigan State basketball is dancing once again

It wasn’t easy, but Michigan State basketball is dancing once again.

The Spartans received a bid to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening, extending the country’s longest active streak of reaching the Big Dance 26 straight appearances. Michigan State landed as a No. 9 seed and will face No. 8 seed Mississippi State in the first round on Thursday.

After a weekend of crazy bubble results, Michigan State was not a lock to make the NCAA Tournament this year. That was seen on head coach Tom Izzo’s face when the Spartans heard their name called on the Selection Sunday show.

MSU basketball off to historically bad start after loss to Wisconsin

Michigan State’s start to the 2023-24 season is historically bad

Michigan State’s start to the 2023-24 season is historically bad.

With another loss on Tuesday night — this time the Spartans’ Big Ten opener against Wisconsin — Michigan State has dropped to 4-4 on the season. According to Jeff Borzello of ESPN, that is a historically bad start to the season for a team that entered the year as a preseason top-five team.

Check out Borzello’s “fun” stat about the Spartans’ brutal start to the season below:

Michigan State will look to right the ship on Sunday and get back above .500 in a road game at Nebraska. After that, the Spartans will face another tough foe in top 10 Baylor at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. So things could be getting even worse for Michigan State if they don’t figure it out quickly.

On3 lists MSU’s Tom Izzo as one of best in college basketball

Many would say Tom Izzo is one of the best coaches in college basketball, and On3 agrees

Many would say Tom Izzo is one of the best coaches in college basketball, and On3 agrees.

Jamie Shaw of On3 put together his list of the top 10 current coaches in all of college basketball, and to no surprise, he had Izzo on the list. Izzo was the lone Big Ten coach included in Shaw’s top 10.

Other notable coaches included in Shaw’s top 10 were John Calipari of Kentucky, Bill Self of Kansas, Mark Few of Gonzaga and Kelvin Sampson of Houston.

Check out his complete top 10 list below and read more about Izzo by clicking on the tweet below:

Couch: Izzo’s latest roster is ‘perfect’ for him – for it’s possibilities and how it’s constructed

It’s been an eventful week for Michigan State basketball

It’s been an eventful week for Michigan State basketball.

The Spartans got some great news with both Tyson Walker and Malik Hall announcing they’d be returning for another season at Michigan State. That essentially locks down the Spartans roster for the 2023-24 season — which should put Michigan State in the top 10 of next year’s preseason polls.

Click on the tweet below to read Graham Couch’s latest column on Michigan State basketball and the roster Tom Izzo has constructed that appears to be the perfect blend:

Izzo says he’s ‘really not’ worried about any MSU player unexpectedly leaving

It sounds like Tom Izzo is confident his roster is finalized for the 2023-24 season

It’s been a great week for Michigan State basketball, with the news that Tyson Walker and Malik Hall would return for the 2023-24 season.

The news of both returning has created some buzz about a trickle-down effect on the rest of the roster. Most notably, if Jaden Akins would consider transferring away to a school that may be able to give him a more prominent role.

Well, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo put that possibility somewhat to bed during his end-of-season press conference on Wednesday. When asked about any sudden or unexpected changes to the 2023-24 roster, Izzo stated he’s “really not” worried about that.

Izzo did mention there are some guys on his team — notably A.J. Hoggard, Walker and Akins — that could test the NBA Draft waters. But at the moment none have entered their name into the draft process.

Should Michigan State’s roster be finalized and there are no other adjustments, the Spartans will enter next season as a preseason top 10 team and contender to win a National Championship.

Detroit Free Press: 3 questions MSU basketball must answer if it wants to make the Final Four next year

Michigan State basketball’s three big offseason questions after Tom Izzo’s 15th Sweet 16 appearance

Michigan State basketball reached its 15th Sweet 16 under Tom Izzo this past season, but what will it take to make the Final Four next year?

The Spartans should return a ton of talent from this year’s team and will be bringing in the No. 3 recruiting class nationally. So expectations will be high for Michigan State in 2023-24.

There are some pressing questions, however, that will determine whether they make a deep run in next year’s NCAA Tournament. Those three notable questions were considered by the Detroit Free Press.

Michigan State Basketball: Assessing this season, looking ahead to next year

Assessing the 2022-23 Michigan State basketball season and looking ahead to what next year’s squad expectations should be entering the offseason

It was a tough ending to a fun ride for Michigan State.

The Spartans’ 2022-23 season came to an end in the Sweet 16 overtime loss to Kansas State on Thursday. The Spartans were favored in that matchup and considered by some — including myself — to be the favorite to reach the Final Four out of the East Region. However, that didn’t happen, and it’s time to move on to the offseason.

Let’s take a look back at the Michigan State highlights and lowlights of this past season, and begin to look ahead to next year:

Tom Izzo holds pair of NCAA Tournament records after upset win over Marquette on Sunday

Tom Izzo continues to prove he’s one of the best to ever do it – especially in March

Tom Izzo continues to prove he’s one of the best to ever do it — especially in March.

Michigan State basketball upset No. 2 seed Marquette on Sunday evening,  further demonstrating how massively successful Izzo is in the NCAA Tournament. He has a pair of records to back that success up, according to CBS sports college basketball reporter Matt Norlander.

Following the Spartans’ victory over the Golden Eagles, Norlander pointed out this was Izzo’s 16th career victory as the lower seed in the NCAA Tournament, a tournament record. He also has taken a team seeded No. 5 or worse to the Sweet 16 six times, which is also a record.

Izzo is the GOAT for Spartans fans, and he showed it again on a national stage on Sunday. Congratulations to Izzo and Spartans everywhere that got to enjoy this big-time victory.

Michigan State will face Kansas State on Thursday in the Sweet 16. That game will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
