Is Lost Graduation Weekend Precursor to Football Season for Locals?

Typically at this time of year, thousands of families flock to South Bend to watch their loved ones graduate from Notre Dame.

Typically at this time of year, thousands of families flock to South Bend to watch their loved ones graduate from Notre Dame. But like at every academic institution, 2020 commencement was a virtual affair. And it wasn’t only the graduates who were robbed of something. Hotels, restaurants and other businesses in and around South Bend didn’t see the money they usually would.

The South Bend Tribune published a story that mentions the local revenue taken in during graduation weekend is the equivalent to what comes in during a home football weekend. With Notre Dame officials expecting games to be played this fall but with limited attendance and tailgating, a further, more sustained blow to the community is expected. The estimated 7,700 local hospitality workers already are facing significant losses thanks to the COVID-19 outbreak. Nothing close to the normal sellout crowds that fill Notre Dame Stadium will make it all the more devastating.

If you live in the South Bend area, please do whatever you possibly can to support the local businesses that have been severely hampered the past two months and surely will be for the foreseeable future. With unemployment higher than during the Great Depression, this is the time to help people keep their jobs. We don’t want this to community to be a shell of what it’s been when this pandemic is over.

Watch: Brian Kelly’s Message to Senior Football Players

Notre Dame football head coach Brian Kelly crafted a letter he read for all of the graduating football players at Notre Dame this weekend.

Graduations and commencements for high school and college seniors are going around this weekend nationwide.  Unfortunately due to the ongoing pandemic, graduations are now being held via YouTube or Zoom sessions instead of with students actually walking across the stage and getting their diplomas.

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly honored Notre Dame’s graduating senior football players by offering a video congratulating them all on their accomplishments both on the field and off.

Over the last four years these players went a combined 37-14 despite going just 4-8 in 2016.

Congragulations and all the best to each and every graduating senior at Notre Dame and elsewhere.  Go attack the so-called real world!

Steph Curry presents commencement speech to celebrate graduating class of 2020

In honor of the graduating class of 2020, Stephen Curry served as the virtual commencement speaker.

While the coronavirus pandemic has halted graduation ceremonies across the world, Stephen Curry still found a way to celebrate the class of 2020. Alongside Kevin Hart and Serena Williams, the Golden State point guard participated in a virtual celebration ceremony for the graduating class of 2020.

Curry, Williams and Hart welcomed students from all over to participate in the “Show Me Your Walk” event. Graduating students were invited to show off their walk across the virtual stage to pick up their diploma.

Like any graduation, the class of 2020 was formally addressed by a group of commencement speakers, including the NBA’s two-time Most Valuable Player.

In his commencement speech, Curry spoke about his journey at Davidson college, family and “his walk.” The six-time All-Star capped off his talk with a challenge for the graduates to “shoot your shot.”

I’m grateful for this opportunity to congratulate you, the undefeated class of 2020. You’re my kind of people — you all know that. You’re record-setting. You’re history-making and you show up to win even in the greatest adversity. You follow through. It’s not what you start; it’s what you finish. You follow through on the promises to yourself. You adapt. You create and inspire. And you continue to dream big and hope. We’re here today to celebrate because we believe in the work that you’ve done. It should be celebrated at the highest level no matter what’s going on right now…

Addressing the graduating class of 2020 is just one of many activities Curry’s been busy with while the NBA season is on hold. Through his Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, the sharpshooter and his wife Ayesha have set up a meal donation plan for out of school children. Curry also launched an informative COVID-19 resource guide that highlights his conversation with infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Next up, Curry will join the Jr. NBA Leadership Conference as a speaker on May 15.
