How well do you know the college roots of today’s NBA players?

Test your knowledge on a pair of Celtics alumni and several other players from around the league.

Most of us know plenty about our favorite players in the NBA, especially the lore-laden rosters of the Boston Celtics. But even among some fairly die-hard Celtics fans, we have gaps in our collective knowledge of where those players played before they suited up in the green and white.

To test their knowledge of where some notable former Celtics and others around the league played at the NCAA level before making the NBA, the folks behind the Clutch Points YouTube channel put together a clip quizzing themselves on the college homes of well-known players in the Association.

Where did former Boston forward Gordon Hayward play collegiately (hint – he played there under the same coach of the Celtics at the time he was in Boston)? And what about present-day Celtics reserve center Blake Griffin?

Take a look at the clip embedded above and see how your memory stacks up.

HoopsHype’s most overpaid player list includes nine former Boston Celtics

Let’s dive into where alumni of the Boston Celtics appear on this list.

There is a good case to be made that with the advent of the NBA salary cap players are actually underpaid. In the context of that cap, however, quite a few players earned more than the value they brought to their clubs. The Boston Celtics are not excluded from that reality.

The folks over at HoopsHype have put together a metric to try to measure such things. The real value metric was developed by HoopsHype analyst Alberto De Roa. In a recent H/H article, authors Sam Yip and Frank Urbina sorted the top 30 players who have fleeced teams in terms of their real value.

Let’s dive into where former Celtics appear on this list.

Lakers are reportedly interested in trading for Terry Rozier

The Lakers are reportedly interested in trading Russell Westbrook to the Charlotte Hornets for a package that would include Terry Rozier.

The Los Angeles Lakers may not seriously pursue any trades involving Russell Westbrook for at least a few more weeks, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have any ideas or that they aren’t kicking the tires on any potential deals.

One possible trade partner that has been discussed for months is the Charlotte Hornets, whose general manager is Mitch Kupchak, the Lakers’ former executive.

According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, L.A. is interested in a package that would include guard Terry Rozier.

Via Marc Stein Substack:

“The Lakers’ interest in Charlotte’s Terry Rozier as a potential headliner in a Russell Westbrook trade is not new,” wrote Stein. “You’ll recall that this Substack has been writing since April about L.A.’s fondness for the former [Boston] Celtic in potential Westbrook-centric trade discussions with Charlotte.”

Rozier is a very skilled player who would give the Lakers another legitimate scoring threat, as well as another secondary ball-handler. The combination of both skill sets could help reduce an aging LeBron James’ workload, especially during the regular season.

He is currently out with an ankle injury, but he put up 23.5 points and 8.5 assists per game in his first two contests this season. Last year he averaged 19.3 points and 4.5 assists a game while shooting 37.4 percent from 3-point range.

The issue is that the Lakers already have plenty of guards, particularly small guards, and that Rozier’s skill sets may be redundant, given that Kendrick Nunn and Dennis Schroder are also capable ball-handling guards who are legitimate scoring threats.

Report: Miami Heat focus shifts to wing as Nets seek more for Durant

Reports indicate that the Miami Heat are moving on from Kevin Durant to their plan B, Gordon Hayward.

While the Miami Heat have been interested in trading for disgruntled superstar Kevin Durant, it now seems that the team is moving on to other prospects including veteran small forward Gordon Hayward.

Basketball writer Sean Deveney of Heavy.com talked with an anonymous NBA executive earlier this week, that disclosed Miami’s plan B. “I think a guy they will keep an eye on is Gordon Hayward. Charlotte’s in a tough position with the (Miles) Bridges thing, they have (Steve) Clifford coming in, they’re in a position to rest things a little bit around LaMelo Ball. Hayward has two years left,” said the exec.

“It’s a short-term move for Miami, but they need to make their move now. You can play him at the 3 and go big or go small at the 4. He’s a guy they’ve had interest in before.”

The Nets organization was reportedly offered a Tyler Herro-based trade package that the team had no interest in. Brooklyn felt as if Durant’s value is worth at least Bam Adebayo and some young talent, but the Heat apparently didn’t feel the same.

On this day: Gordon Hayward agrees to sign; Griffin, Lucas born; Gene Conley passes

On this day, Boston Celtics All-Star forward Gordon Hayward agreed to sign with the team after his agent initially denied he planned to do so.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team landed All-Star forward Gordon Hayward in 2017 after the Indiana native penned a letter in The Player’s Tribune announcing his decision to leave the Utah Jazz to sign with the Celtics.

Earlier in the day, his agent had denied reports by ESPN NBA insider Chris Haynes that the unrestricted free agent would sign with Boston, but the former Butler player opted for a largely ill-fated reunion with his college coach, Brad Stevens, who had left the collegiate ranks to join the Celtics in the same role in 2013.

“There were so many great things pulling me in that direction,” Hayward explained. “There was the winning culture of Boston, as a city — from the (Red) Sox to the (New England) Pats to the (Boston) Bruins.

Proposed B/R trade sends Gordon Hayward to Cavs, Kevin Love to Hornets

Flipping Hayward for Love would save the Hornets a lot of money next offseason.

It’s trade machine season as potential offseason moves are being discussed and proposed on the daily.

Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale came up with a proposed trade for every team not in the NBA Finals, and for the Charlotte Hornets, that meant swapping Gordon Hayward for another veteran forward.

Favale proposed that Charlotte send Gordon Hayward, Mason Plumlee, and Boston’s 2024 second-round pick to Cleveland for Kevin Love and Cedi Osman.

Favale writes:

“Granted, this is more about the dollars and cents for Charlotte. Love makes less than Gordon Hayward next season and comes off the books in the summer of 2023—a full year before Hayward. Getting out from under the latter’s 2023-24 salary means something to a franchise that will have Terry Rozier and, presumably, Miles Bridges (restricted) on mega-expensive contracts.”

Correct, this trade is all about shedding money faster for the Hornets, as Kevin Love has one year left on his deal compared to two years remaining on Hayward’s.

As for the fit, Love would offer a true veteran leader for Charlotte who could produce off the bench, whether that’s scoring or on the boards, as he did for Cleveland this past year. Cedi Osman adds a versatile wing off the bench who honestly adds a little bit of everything, similar to Cody Martin.

The Gordon Hayward experiment has been a disappointing one for Charlotte as he’s been incapable of staying healthy. Getting off his remaining $61 million would open up money for the Hornets going forward, as they’ll have to extend Miles Bridges this offseason and LaMelo Ball shortly after that.

Where should Gordon Hayward play next season?

Gordon Hayward trade rumors have picked up steam. Where should the former All-Star play next season?

Former All-Star Gordon Hayward may be looking for a new NBA chapter, as rumors have swirled that the former Butler Bulldog is unhappy in Charlotte. The Hornets, meanwhile, have a bonafide superstar in LaMelo Ball, and a budding identity centered on speed and athleticism. The oft-injured Hayward is on the wrong side of thirty, and might not fit Charlotte’s future or timeline.

Hayward is in the midst of a hefty four-year, $120 million contract. To complicate the matter, any move would trigger a 15% trade bonus for Hair Gordon. When healthy, he is still one of the better players in the NBA, but certainly moving such a lucrative deal would be quite challenging for the Hornets. Still, like Bradley Beal or even Kyrie Irving, a major change could be in the works.

If the Hornets do make good on any of the many Gordon Hayward trade rumors currently floating around, it could send shockwaves around the NBA. This may be an opportunity for Charlotte to re-tool its roster and for Hayward to play a bigger role elsewhere. So, where should Gordon Hayward play next season?

Gordon Hayward to miss play-in tournament due to left foot discomfort

Hayward has struggled to consistently remain on the floor after returning from his foot injury.

The Charlotte Hornets are preparing to compete for a playoff spot in the play-in tournament for the second-straight year. And for the second-straight year, Charlotte will be missing one of their best players.

Reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic, Hornets forward Gordon Hayward will miss the play-in tournament due to discomfort in his left foot.

Charania reported that Hayward’s foot will be put in a cast and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, which barring a miracle, will eliminate his chances of seeing the postseason.

The initial injury took place on Feb. 8 against the Toronto Raptors, as Hayward sprained ligaments in his left ankle after Gary Trent Jr. rolled up on his foot in an awkward fall.

Hayward has only played in one game since the injury, playing roughly 17 minutes vs. 76ers on April 2.

In 48 games this season, Hayward averaged 15.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.

Multiple Hornets give respect to Sixers stars Joel Embiid, James Harden

The Charlotte Hornets give their respect to Philadelphia 76ers star duo Joel Embiid and James Harden.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers have a new star duo in the form of Joel Embiid and James Harden in order to contend for a title in the Eastern Conference and they are still working out the kinks, but they had themselves a day on Saturday.

Embiid had 29 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists and Harden had 12 points, 13 assists, and eight rebounds as the Sixers blew out the Charlotte Hornets 144-114 while using a big third quarter to get it done.

After the matchup, the young Hornets gave their respect to the star duo as they could also face the Sixers again in the playoffs if everything shakes out that way in the East.

Hornets star Gordon Hayward to make return in road matchup vs. Sixers

Charlotte Hornets star Gordon Hayward is set to return against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

The Philadelphia 76ers are getting set to return home on Saturday afternoon and play host to the Charlotte Hornets in a matchup the team needs in order to move forward and get back on track.

The Hornets will enter the contest with a 40-36 record and are in a 3-way tie with the Brooklyn Nets and the Atlanta Hawks for the No. 8 seed in the East, but they are a talented bunch who will give the Sixers some trouble.

The last time the Sixers and the Hornets matched up was back on Jan. 12 when the Hornets came away with a 109-98 win over the Sixers. The leading scorer for Charlotte was star forward Gordon Hayward who went off for 30 points to go along with seven assists and three steals.

Hayward then suffered an injury in February and he hasn’t played since Feb. 7. However, he is set to make his return on Saturday against the Sixers.

With Hayward’s return, that is another piece that the Sixers will have to worry about next to LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier. This will be a test for coach Doc Rivers and the rest of the team to bounce back from a bad loss on Thursday to the Detroit Pistons.
